Abstract

Cancel culture is an act of mass cancellation or boycott experienced by public figures. Arawinda Kirana is one of the public figures who experienced cancel culture. She is considered to have committed an act of infidelity, which most netizens think is wrong. This research aims to reveal the form of power relations in the cancel culture phenomenon in social media. In Arawinda's case, data will be taken as screenshots in social media posts; then, a qualitative approach will be used to examine the data. This study found that cancel culture has a form of power relations between netizens and their targets. The netizen has the knowledge that tries to dominate the party, which is considered wrong. Generally, society is dominated by beliefs that believe that loyalty in intimate relationships is only in the form of monogamy. Infidelity as a form of non-monogamous relationship will be the target of public hatred. Therefore, if there are members of the public who are public figures, they will receive criticism, one of which is through cancel culture. The study employs thematic content analysis to classify collected data, revealing that cancel culture is driven by the belief that monogamous relationships are the only valid form.

Abstract

The Nadran ceremony is an annual tradition among coastal communities in Indramayu, serving as an expression of gratitude to God for abundant marine harvests. This ritual reflects rich local cultural values such as social solidarity, maritime spirituality, and marine environmental preservation. This study aims to explore the traditional values embedded in the Nadran ceremony and its potential as a cultural tourism attraction. A qualitative approach was employed, using participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and visual documentation techniques. The findings reveal that Nadran functions not only as a religious ritual but also as a means of expressing the collective identity of coastal communities. Its potential as a cultural tourism attraction is significant if managed participatively and sustainably. The involvement of local communities in preservation efforts and the contextual packaging of the attraction are key to developing traditional tourism based on local values. These findings are expected to enhance understanding of the integration between local cultural preservation and sustainable tourism development in coastal areas.

Abstract

Nadine Labaki's Capernaum represents the impact of poverty on the fulfillment of children's rights. In this article, the issue of poverty and its social consequences are analyzed through the story of the main character Zain, a street child who struggles with all forms of poverty in Lebanon. Using Gramsci's theory of hegemony, the research reveals how poverty, as a form of economic hegemony, affects children's lives and how they resist these conditions in their capacity as children. The analysis focuses on the representation of poverty and its influence on the fulfillment of children's rights, especially the rights to survival, protection, development, and participation. The research findings show that the film creates awareness of social issues, such as poverty and children's rights, and encourages children as members of society to take concrete actions against the hegemony. It is also a critique of the power that overrides children's rights and considers children as passive objects in society.

Abstract

Social criticism in literary works functions as a medium for authors to highlight various societal issues, particularly deviations within social reality. The short story Anā Sulṭānu Qānūni al-Wujūdi by Yusuf Idris exemplifies this by presenting social criticism through animal symbolism. This study employs a descriptive-analytical approach consisting of three stages: data collection, data analysis, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal four forms of social criticism based on Soerjono Soekanto’s classification, namely criticism of youth (apathy and resistance), poverty, bureaucracy, and crime. These forms of criticism are expressed through the figure of a lion in the circus arena, interpreted as a symbol of various social issues within society.

Abstract

This study examines the transformation of the “beautiful Indies” (mooie Indië) visual discourse through Raden Saleh’s painting “Merapi, Eruption by Day”. The “beautiful Indies” style celebrated an idealized vision of the Dutch East Indies, raising questions about the influence of late-romantic European on Indigenous artists such as Raden Saleh. The research employs a qualitative and interpretive design grounded in Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of structuration. This framework enables a deconstruction of colonial aesthetic orders and the dynamics of symbolic power embedded in the ‘mooie Indië’ tradition. Methodologically, the study integrates heuristic and source criticism to contextualize colonial discourse, and montage analysis to reinterpret art elements of Raden Saleh’s painting, thereby exposing tensions between colonial ideology and artistic agency. Findings reveal that “Merapi, Eruption by Day” both appropriates and subverts the ‘mooie Indië’ aesthetic. Through the lens of Pierre Bourdieu, the painting demonstrates how Raden Saleh’s artistic practice can negotiates structures of domination while asserting symbolic capital for the colonized subject. At the same time, the Mount Merapi motif embodies the romantic sublime, destabilizing orientalist expectations of harmony and exotic natural beauty. Raden Saleh’s work thus transforms the colonial discourse of “the beautiful Indies” into a site of symbolic struggle, where visual strategies articulate resistance and intellectual agency within the colonial field of power.
