Abstract

The Nadran ceremony is an annual tradition among coastal communities in Indramayu, serving as an expression of gratitude to God for abundant marine harvests. This ritual reflects rich local cultural values such as social solidarity, maritime spirituality, and marine environmental preservation. This study aims to explore the traditional values embedded in the Nadran ceremony and its potential as a cultural tourism attraction. A qualitative approach was employed, using participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and visual documentation techniques. The findings reveal that Nadran functions not only as a religious ritual but also as a means of expressing the collective identity of coastal communities. Its potential as a cultural tourism attraction is significant if managed participatively and sustainably. The involvement of local communities in preservation efforts and the contextual packaging of the attraction are key to developing traditional tourism based on local values. These findings are expected to enhance understanding of the integration between local cultural preservation and sustainable tourism development in coastal areas.

Abstract

Nadine Labaki's Capernaum represents the impact of poverty on the fulfillment of children's rights. In this article, the issue of poverty and its social consequences are analyzed through the story of the main character Zain, a street child who struggles with all forms of poverty in Lebanon. Using Gramsci's theory of hegemony, the research reveals how poverty, as a form of economic hegemony, affects children's lives and how they resist these conditions in their capacity as children. The analysis focuses on the representation of poverty and its influence on the fulfillment of children's rights, especially the rights to survival, protection, development, and participation. The research findings show that the film creates awareness of social issues, such as poverty and children's rights, and encourages children as members of society to take concrete actions against the hegemony. It is also a critique of the power that overrides children's rights and considers children as passive objects in society.

Abstract

The concept of "beautiful Indies" (mooie Indië) is understood as a project of visual discourse transformation in the Dutch East Indies. This study highlights Raden Saleh's painting "Forest Fire", which represents a romantic manifestation while simultaneously challenging colonial narratives about nature and society in the Indies. The aim of the research is to reveal the trans-cultural visual strategies employed by Raden Saleh in constructing a counter-discourse to colonial representation. The study adopts a qualitative-interpretative approach using heuristic methods, source criticism, and montage analysis, contextualized within Pierre Bourdieu's theoretical framework. Montage analysis is applied by juxtaposing and reassembling visual, symbolic, and socio-political elements of the painting, producing new readings of colonial power relations. Pierre Bourdieu's concepts of habitus, field, and capital are then used to interpret these montage findings, showing Raden Saleh's position as a Javanese artist shaped by European experience within the colonial art field. The results demonstrate that "Forest Fire" not only depicts nature, humans, and animals but also articulates a critique of colonial structures through symbolic construction. This work underscores the role of visual art as a medium capable of reshaping colonial representation by combining montage strategies with the social dynamics explained through Pierre Bourdieu's framework.

Abstract

Literary narratives in the context of historical trauma play a role in shaping collective memory and gender resistance, especially for Chinese women during the New Order era. This study aims to analyze interpersonal relationships in emotional memory narratives as resistance by Chinese female characters in Soe Tjen Marching's novel Dari dalam Kubur. Therefore, this study is a descriptive qualitative study with a literary discourse analysis approach based on Karen Horney's feminist psychology theory (1973;1937). The main stages of analysis include the identification of gender trauma discourse, the categorization of three styles of interpersonal relationships (approaching, opposing, and distancing), the analysis of the representation of New Order mental trauma, and a study of the historical context that reflects the dynamics of patriarchal power. This model is relevant for describing literary narratives with psychological resistance strategies against historical trauma memories. The data collection method used was to document the discourse of the novel through in-depth reading and recording elements of resistance. In the data analysis stage, this study used Horney's interpersonal style analysis scheme (1973; 1937) and a trauma study approach in literature. The results of the study show that interpersonal relationships (tendencies to approach, oppose, or distance oneself) through Chinese female characters become a symbolic resistance strategy, not merely a neurotic fulfillment, but a transformation of the subaltern position into an active subject that opposes patriarchal ideology and the history of marginalized women within the collective sphere of the state and family.

Abstract

Children’s literature serves as an effective medium for instilling various ideologies, including ecological awareness, in young readers. This study analyzes the representation of ecological issues in the children’s book Pilus Rumput Laut untuk Rasi (2022). It evaluates its suitability for children’s literature, considering its adherence to children’s literature characteristics and the challenges of adapting complex topics. Using a qualitative approach with ecocritical content analysis, grounded in Glotfelty and Fromm’s (1996) theoretical framework, this study identifies five main issues: local climate change, mining-induced damage, plastic pollution, environmental justice, and ecocentrism. The results indicate that the book effectively adapts complex issues through simple language, action-based narratives, a focus on hope, and strong visuals, aligning well with characteristics of intermediate-level children’s literature (Jenjang Semenjana). However, criticisms include the potential for oversimplification of complex structural environmental justice issues and the risk of eliciting anxiety or controversy. This research contributes to filling gaps in studies on environmental issue representation within Indonesian socio-cultural contexts, the effectiveness of visual/narrative messages, and the handling of emotional dimensions in children’s literature.

Abstract

Al-Mu'tazilah is a portrait of the Egyptian society which lived at some point in time. As described by Thaha Husain in order to show the disparity in the social life of people who need assistance and attention from the government or the authorities. Although the society lived in modern times at that time, not few other inhabitants still remained in underdeveloped education and social life. Through his work Al-Mu'tazilah, Thaha Husain highlights a range of social dimensions of society. This is the central issue to be addressed in this study. To reveal this social dimension, the sociology of literature theory is used, which focuses on the discussion of the sociology of both the author and the literary works. Primary data relevant to the topic were examined using a qualitative method in order to obtain an objective and scientific analysis. After all course, this study is of interest to the academic community in particular, and to other communities. The benefits are to mimic the social attitudes that can be enforced in today's life. In addition, people may refrain from doing things which might harm the social environment, such as isolating someone from another society.
