Abstract

Highlights:1. Novel synthetic biopolymer hydrogels were successfully prepared from pristine poly(ethylene glycol) dimethacrylate (PEGDMA) and nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) using the photopolymerization method.2. PEGDMA-NFC biocomposite hydrogel can be developed as an affordable biomaterial for herniated nucleus pulposus substitute, with the potential to meet clinical application standards. Abstract Herniated nucleus pulposus develops when the intervertebral disc portudes through the annulus fibrosus due to the rupture of the annulus fibrosus or a decrease in proteoglycans. Hydrogel implant material can be injected into the disc space to restore disc thickness caused by disc degeneration with minimal invasiveness. This study aimed to characterize poly(ethylene glycol) dimethacrylate-nanofibrillated cellulose (PEGDMA-NFC) in vitro as a potential biomaterial for herniated nucleus pulposus substitute. This study utilized PEGDMA-NFC to treat first-degree herniated nucleus pulposus using the photopolymerization method. PEGDMA was selected because of its hydrophilic ability to produce hydrogel. The addition of NFC to the PEGDMA precursor was expected to show mechanical properties as a hydrogel bio composite candidate. The characterization of PEGDMA-NFC was conducted using three tests: Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), viscosity assessment, and an in vitro injection testing model. The normal distribution of the data was analyzed using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, while the homogeneity was assessed using Levene's test. Homogenous and normally distributed data were analyzed using a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) with a p-value of <0.05. The explored concentrations of PEGDMA-NFC included a ratio of 1:0 for the control samples and ratios of 1:0.5 (K1), 1:0.75 (K2), and 1:1 (K3) for the experimental samples. The FTIR analysis revealed the presence of various functional groups in PEGDMA-NFC, indicating its potential classification as a hydrogel biomaterial. The characterization data showed that the K3 sample yielded the most favourable outcome with a viscosity value of 74.67 dPa·s. From the in vitro injection testing result, the addition of NFC demonstrated that the hydrogel would not rupture when released from the mold. The hydrogel could be injected with an 18 gauge needle. The statistical analysis results showed a significant difference among the samples (p<0.05). This study concludes that the PEGDMA-NFC hydrogel biocomposite can be effectively applied in herniated nucleus pulposus cases.

Abstract

Background: Cardiovascular disease as the first silent killer in the world is related to atherosclerosis plaque. Coronary artery bypass grafting as a gold standard for severe atherosclerosis needs alternative materials to replace the narrowed artery due to plaque. PLLA is one of the biodegradable polymers which is suitable for the vascular graft, but some of its weaknesses should be addressed.Objective: The aim of this research is to improve PLLA characteristics for a vascular graft candidate by using collagen and chitosan.Methods: This study was an experimental study that consisted of two steps, preparation of hollow fiber and evaluation of its characteristic. This research evaluated the effect of chitosan concentration against cytotoxicity and hemocompatibility using MTT assay and hemolytic test.Results: The result showed that chitosan could improve the biological characteristics of hollow fiber PLLA-collagen, non-toxic, and non-hemolytic.Conclusions: There is a good effect on the biological characteristics of PLLA-Collagen hollow fiber by adding chitosan on the surface of PLLA-Collagen hollow fiber.

Abstract

Hydroxyapatite (HA) scaffold has been widely applied in the biomedical field especially for bone implants. The purpose of this research is to determine the influence of dispersant addition and stirring time on HA scaffold which formed using gambas sponges as a template. HA slurry was made by mixing 10 grams of HA, 12 grams of aquadest, 0,2; 0,25; 0,3 grams of Darvan 821A and 1 gram of sago. The slurry was impregnated into Luffa cylindrica sponges. The sample then dried at 110oC for 3 hours. The green bodies were burned at 600oC for 1 hour and followed by sintering at 1250oC for 1 hour. The results showed that the addition of dispersant and increasing of stirring time lead to smaller porosity and shrinkage. In addition 0,2; 0,25; and 0,3 grams dispersant, the resulting porosity in the range of 63,85-70,78%; 58,74-70,35%; and 53,42-69,66%. Shrinkage 39,43-53,71%; 27,75-50,68%; and 13,61-41,25%. Compressive strength 0,61-1,05 MPa; 2,88-3,81MPa; and 0,52-2,96 MPa. The macroporous and microporous average pore sized was 50 m dan 5 m.

Abstract

One of the problems that exist in the community of Pradah Kalikendal Village, which is the largest sub-district in Dukuh Pakis District, Surabaya, is the waste of water that occurs during ablution and increasing chronic fatigue in the community which has an impact on reducing community productivity. Based on this, Airlangga University launched a community service program with the theme "Utilization of Technology in Realizing Sustainable and Productive Life in Pradah Kalikendal Village, Surabaya" which aims to increase water conservation and prevent fatigue and maintain community productivity through the application of technology, such as the use of automatic water taps. with a filter that can turn off when there is no object that stimulates the sensor and a fatigue detection tool to determine the individual's fatigue condition. This is necessary to prevent health problems and maintain the individual's fitness status. The program objectives are (1) water conservation: Using automatic sensor faucet technology to reducing water waste, especially in public service areas such as sub-districts, health centers and places of worship and (2) maintaining productivity: using a microcontroller-based fatigue detection tool to monitor the fatigue of people involved in intensive physical activity. This program involves Airlangga University students as part of the implementation of the Independent Learning Campus (MBKM) policy, which provides direct experience for students to interact with the community and solve real problems. This program takes the form of training on the use of technology-based tools in the form of filtered water taps for local residents, especially At-Taqwa mosque administrators and Dukuh Kupang Health Center medical personnel, for water conservation and the use of work fatigue detectors. Evaluation is carried out through questionnaires and community testimonials to measure the effectiveness of the program.

Abstract

Broken nerves could regenerate when exposed to simple injuries by using a nerve conduit that has appropriate physiological and mechanical ability to support the nerves regeneration around the fissure of trauma. One of the biopolymer for the conduit composition is chitosan because it is biocompatible, biodegradable, non-toxic, and has similarity structure as natural glycosaminoglycans. The aim of research is to synthesize chitosan with variation of Degrees of Deacetylation (DD) and characterize the DD influence on mechanical properties and biocompatibility. Research design is prospective observational. Chitosan was treated with a decrease in the DD method and an increase in the temperature with the strength of alkaline solution, which was NaOH solution with concentrations of 5%, 20%, 35%, and 50% within 2 hours with a heating temperature of 95°C. The results of each DD variation were 23.24, 46.55, 53.48, and 55.06. It was characterized by tensile test with tensile strength values of 0.25 - 1.18 MPa. The degradation test results tend to decrease with the increasing concentration of NaOH proving that samples are biodegradable. The surface morphology of samples shows a pore range of 61.52 μm - 220.3 μm. The best result is the chitosan sample with 35% NaOH because due to the tensile characteristic and a pore in accordance with normal standard. Tensile strength is around 0.41 MPa - 3.69 MPa and pore size around 40 μm – 250 μm to accelerate nerve regeneration. The results are expected to provide alternative solution of nerve conduit development for peripheral nerve defects.

Abstract

Head trauma was the third cause of deaths that have a high rank that can make serious head injury for 25.5%-54.9%. This study has been conducted by making a replacement layer of the brain (dura) to overcome the impact of dural defect by utilizing waste fish scales red snapper (Lutjanus sp.). Synthesis brain membranes lining processed by casting method with each various concentrations of chitosan coating of 1%, 1.5%, and 2% then dried using vacuum dry. The samples then were characterized by tensile test, FTIR, SEM and MTT Assay. FTIR test results showed that red snipperscales can produce collagen powder at amide A group with stretching of –NH functional group, amide B group has stretching of CH2 assymetry, amide I area, amide II and amide III area which show –NH bonding. Tensile test results showed that the combination between PLGA-Collagen Chitosan Coating 2% produced the highest tensile strength is 4.8 MPa which meet the standards of human duramater strength. MTT Assay results showed that the dural membrane produced no toxic seen from living cells reached 98.32%. Poly - Glycolyc Lactic - Co Acid (PLGA) - collagen coating chitosan based on red snapper fish scales (Lutjanus sp.) composites has potency as duramater artificial candidate due to the chemistry, biological and physical characteristics.

Abstract

Background: Effective post-tooth extraction bleeding management and the alleviation of patient discomfort hinge upon the careful choice and judicious application of suitable hemostatic agents. Purpose: In this study, we developed a biodegradable, porous hemostatic sponge composed of gelatin (GE) and chitosan (CS), enhanced by the incorporation of pomegranate peel extract (PE), which was designed for use in dental applications, with a focus on antibacterial properties and infection prevention. Methods: The sponge was synthesized using an environmentally friendly (green) foaming approach without a foaming agent and was fabricated by freeze-drying. The efficiency of the hemostatic sponge was evaluated using various tests, including structural analysis, mechanical strength, water absorption capacity, hydrophilicity, blood clotting time (BCT), in vitro antibacterial effectiveness, and biodegradability. Results: The calcium chloride–crosslinked CS-GE and PE-immersed (CS-GE-PE) sponges exhibited adequate tensile strengths, with CS-GE-PE at 0.776 ± 0.025 MPa. The CS-GE-PE sponge showed significant water absorption (927.1% ± 37.55%). Hydrophilicity was evident (contact angle: 45°) and decreased slightly with the addition of PE. The BCT was shorter for the CS-GE sponge (161 ± 9.644 s), and both sponges exhibited minimal hemolysis, indicating biocompatibility. The CS-GE-PE sponge exhibited slightly enhanced antibacterial properties. Conclusion: This study has successfully developed a composite sponge consisting of CS, GE, and PE that exhibits a balanced level of biodegradability, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, and blood absorption properties that reduce clotting time. This innovative material has great potential for a wide range of clinical applications in dental procedures and wound care.

Highlights:1. By investigating knockdown-resistance (kdr) mutations associated with insecticide resistance, this research addresses a critical gap in understanding how these mutations may affect vector control strategies on Mengare Island, Gresik, Indonesia.2. This study provides essential data on the current status of dengue virus serotypes and resistance mutations in mosquito populations across the region, guiding local health authorities in developing targeted vector control strategies. AbstractDengue fever, caused by the dengue virus (DENV), poses a significant public health challenge, particularly in tropical regions. This study aimed to detect flavivirus presence, DENV serotypes, and knockdown-resistance (kdr) mutations in mosquito samples collected from Mengare Island, Gresik, Indonesia. A cross-sectional experimental design was employed, utilizing reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) for flavivirus detection and serotyping, as well as for identifying kdr mutations. Ribonucleic acid (RNA) extraction was performed using the Quick-RNA™ Miniprep Plus Kit (Zymo Research, Irvine, CA, USA), followed by RT-PCR with specific primers for DENV serotypes 1–4 and kdr mutations (V1016G and F1534C). Six adult female Aedes albopictus mosquitoes were analyzed in this study. The results revealed no evidence of flavivirus infection or DENV serotypes in the mosquito samples, as no complementary deoxyribonucleic acid (cDNA) bands corresponding to expected base pair sizes were observed on the agarose gels. Similarly, the analysis of kdr mutations showed that all samples were homozygous wildtype, with no mutations detected at the V1016G or F1534C loci. In conclusion, these findings suggest the absence of active dengue virus transmission or notable insecticide resistance in the studied mosquito population from Mengare Island. This study highlights the importance of continuous monitoring of flavivirus presence and resistance mutations. The variability in kdr mutation frequencies across regions underscores the need for sustained surveillance and effective control measures to mitigate potential outbreaks in high-risk areas such as Mengare Island.

Abstract

Berdasarkan beberapa sumber di media massa/elektronik dan badan penanggulangan Penyakit Tidak Menular dan Kesehatan Jiwa Dinas kesehatan Kabupaten Blitar, mencatat pada tahun 2022, ada 755 warga yang terdeteksi menderita gangguan mental emosional (GME) khususnya kecemasan emosional dan banyak temuan kasus dari kalangan remaja. Ada beberapa faktor pemicu, diantaranya adalah kondisi keluarga yang broken home, serta pengaruh sosial media yang tidak dimanfaatkan dengan baik. Kecemasan yang tidak tertangani dapat berkembang menjadi depresi yang berpotensi memicu tindakan bunuh diri, terutama pada individu yang berada di usia produktif. Kelompok usia dengan angka bunuh diri tertinggi berada dalam rentang 15 hingga 29 tahun. Upaya pendeteksian dini terhadap kecemasan emosional khususnya di kalangan remaja menjadi sebuah peluang solusi untuk mencegah generasi muda melakukan bunuh diri melalui pemanfaatan teknologi. Kemajuan ilmu pengetahuan dan teknologi di era revolusi industri 4.0 telah melahirkan berbagai inovasi baru yang memberikan dampak signifikan di berbagai sektor kehidupan. Salah satu inovasi yang menonjol adalah teknologi kecerdasan buatan (Artificial Intelligence). Setiap peluang yang tersedia akan menjadi sia-sia jika tidak didukung oleh sumber daya manusia yang kompeten dan memiliki wawasan luas. Generasi muda merupakan sasaran utama yang paling tepat untuk meningkatkan kualitas sumber daya manusia di Indonesia. Melalui kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat (PKM) ini, sekelompok masyarakat dengan latar belakang pengetahuan dasar di bidang pemrograman komputer telah memperoleh pembekalan pengetahuan dan keterampilan. Dalam konteks ini, pelatihan diberikan kepada siswa SMKN 1 Kota Blitar, Provinsi Jawa Timur, yang memiliki minat di bidang Teknik Komputer dan Informatika (TKI). Kegiatan yang telah  dilakukan tidak hanya dapat bermanfaat dalam penanggulangan kesehatan emosional remaja di beberapa daerah di kota Blitar, tapi juga sebagai  upaya peningkatan mutu siswa berkaitan dengan bidang komputer cerdas agar ketika lulus sekolah mampu bersaing di dunia kerja dan mampu mengembangkan berbagai macam software yang bermanfaat bagi masyarakat di Indonesia dalam menghadapi era Industri 4.0. Kegiatan PKM ini dibagi menjadi dua bagian, yaitu pelatihan pemrograman dasar python dan pengenalan aplikasi kecerdasan buatan untuk deteksi tingkat kecemasan pada remaja. Evaluasi pelaksanaan program ini dilakukan melalui sistem kuesioner yang mengukur tingkat pengetahuan siswa sebelum dan sesudah mengikuti PKM terkait materi pelatihan yang diberikan. Selain itu, masukan dan testimoni dari siswa serta guru SMKN 1 Blitar turut menjadi bahan pertimbangan untuk meningkatkan kualitas pelaksanaan program PKM di masa mendatang. Kegiatan edukasi melalui pelatihan dasar pemrograman phyton dan pengenalan aplikasi kecerdasan buatan untuk deteksi tingkat kecemasan pada remaja sangat bermanfaat dalam penanggulangan kesehatan emosional remaja di beberapa daerah di kota Blitar dan juga sebagai upaya peningkatan mutu siswa berkaitan dengan bidang komputer cerdas agar ketika lulus mampu bersaing di dunia kerja. Metode workshop yang bersifat interaktif melalui penerapan praktik langsung dalam pembuatan aplikasi berbasis Python dan kecerdasan buatan dapat memperkuat minat siswa untuk mengikuti proses pembelajaran di kelas. Selain itu, metode ini juga mendukung guru dalam menyampaikan materi kepada siswa dengan lebih mudah.

Selain itu, masukan dan testimoni dari siswa serta guru SMKN 1 Blitar turut menjadi bahan pertimbangan untuk meningkatkan kualitas pelaksanaan program PKM di masa mendatang. Kegiatan edukasi melalui pelatihan dasar pemrograman phyton dan pengenalan aplikasi kecerdasan buatan untuk deteksi tingkat kecemasan pada remaja sangat bermanfaat dalam penanggulangan kesehatan emosional remaja di beberapa daerah di kota Blitar dan juga sebagai upaya peningkatan mutu siswa berkaitan dengan bidang komputer cerdas agar ketika lulus mampu bersaing di dunia kerja. Metode workshop yang bersifat interaktif melalui penerapan praktik langsung dalam pembuatan aplikasi berbasis Python dan kecerdasan buatan dapat memperkuat minat siswa untuk mengikuti proses pembelajaran di kelas. Selain itu, metode ini juga mendukung guru dalam menyampaikan materi kepada siswa dengan lebih mudah.
