Abstract

Authentic assessment is a pivotal in teaching-learning process. With the use of authentic assessment, teachers can measure students’ learning achievement and progress effectively. This research investigated how teachers implement authentic assessment focusing in students’ speaking skills in two different schools. The study applied descriptive-qualitative method. Two English teachers were interviewed. In addition, the data collected by structured-interview and documentation. The finding stated that the English teachers applied authentic assessment nicely through the usage of different kind appealing activities in their speaking class.

Abstract

Guru mempunyai peran yang esensial dan memiliki pengaruh besar terhadap kualitas pembelajaran. Sanggar Belajar (SB) Subang Mewah merupakan sanggar belajar baru dan jumlah gurunya sangat terbatas. Keterampilan guru dalam menstimulasi perkembangan literasi, numerasi dan life skill pada anak sangat minim, padahal ke-3 komponen ini sangat dibutuhkan di era digital ini. Tujuan dari pengabdian kepada masyarakat kemitraan internasional (PkM-KI) ini adalah memberikan Penguatan Keterampilan Guru dalam Menstimulasi Perkembangan Literasi, Numerasi dan Life Skill di Sanggar Belajar (SB) Subang Mewah Malaysia. Pengabdian PkM K-I ini melibatkan 2 dosen dan 4 mahasiswa. Metode pelaksanaan pengabdian dilakukan melalui beberapa tahap yaitu, (1) pemetaan awal kondisi mitra, penyamaan persepsi dan koordinasi tentang permasalahan mitra, (2) pembekalan untuk mahasiswa tentang stimulasi literasi, numerasi dan life skill pada anak, selanjutnya mahasiswa praktik, (3) pendampingan oleh tim pengabdian kepada mahasiswa dan guru tentang teknik stimulasi literasi, numerasi dan life skill, (4) mahasiswa diterjunkan ke lokasi memberikan contoh praktik mengajarkan literasi, numerasi dan life skill kepada anak (5) guru didampingi tim pengabdian mengamati proses pembelajaran yang dilakukan mahasiswa, (6) guru menerapkan berbagai metode mengajar, (7) hasil penerapan dievaluasi untuk perbaikan pembelajaran selanjutnya. Kesimpulan dari pengabdian menunjukkan pemahaman keterampilan pedagogis guru SB Subang Mewah mengalami peningkatan. Guru SB Subang Mewah mampu menerapkan Best Practice, penggunaan inovasi pembelajaran, teknik modeling, dan mengintegrasikan teknologi dalam pembelajaran yang belum pernah dilakukan sebelumnya. Anak didik sangat senang, karena kegiatan literasi, numerasi dan life skill disampaikan guru dengan cara yang menyenangkan, mudah, menarik, dan menantang pemahaman anak.

Abstract

Online learning will most certainly have an important role to play in future learning. E-learning courses come in a variety of formats and utilize a range of technologies. E-learning enables students to complete training and educational objectives with greater ease and flexibility. PK Learning is an online education with an interactive and self-paced form of learning that can be used by Muhammadiyah Program Khusus to learn anytime, anywhere. This study described middle-school students’ attitudes toward the use of PK Learning from its accessibility, flexibility, and effectiveness. There is one class in each grade consisting of 30 or 31 students, which was used to collect the data, which means that 93 students from grades 7, 8, and 9 participated in this research. The data was collected in the form of a descriptive case study with interviews and observation. The purpose of this study was to explore the student’s perception of the use of PK Learning. Analysis percentage and the result of the interview were used to capture the responses. Analysis of the data revealed three major positive perceptions toward PK Learning: accessibility, flexibility, and effectiveness. Based on the findings, The use of PK Learning from students’ perceptions in the Muhamamadiyah Program at Khusus Junior High School is discussed.

Abstract

This research discusses the implementation of English teaching in new normal era during COVID-19 pandemic which reveals the offline teaching activity in class with the new normal health protocol implementation, the procurement of health protocol support facilities, and the students’ preference of learning methods which have been experienced during COVID-19 pandemic. The objectives of this research are: a) providing the portray of English teaching activity and the activity in school in general in new normal era during COVID-19 pandemic, and b) measuring the students’ preference of the used learning methods both offline or online learning in COVID-19 pandemic. The subject of this research was the 7th students and teacher at SMP Negeri 3 Teras. The techniques of collecting data used were observation, interview, and questionnaire. The data from the observation and questionnaire for this research were analyzed qualitatively in order to provide the phenomena in the school descriptively, while the students’ questionnaire responses were also processed qualitatively and provided descriptively. The findings of this research showed that there were a number of differences which were implemented in limited offline learning such as the limitation of class capacity, weekly schedule setting, the implementation of new normal health protocol (wearing mask, limitation of class capacity, and keeping the distance) and providing the facilities which support the prevention of COVID-19 spread such as washstand, hand sanitizer, and thermometer.

Abstract

The existence of the curriculum is one of the components that has a strategic role in the education system. Without the right curriculum, students will not get learning targets that are appropriate and tailored to the needs of students in their respective eras. The study is aimed at to describe teachers’ understanding of the Problem Based Learning model in English teaching and to analyze the implementation of the Problem Based Learning model in English teaching at SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Surakarta. The type of research that used in this study was a qualitative approach. From the results of interviews and observational data that researchers conducted, the teacher has implemented the steps of the Problem Based Learning procedure coherently, it’s just that due to lack of time management so that the fourth step cannot be done, and researchers cannot conclude its suitability

Abstract

This study aims to describe the use of animated short films, the challenges faced by the teacher and the students’ response towards its implementation in Speaking class. This research employed descriptive qualitative design and the data were taken through interviews and observations. The participants of this study were 14 students from grade 9 and 1 teacher who were interviewed and observed. The result of this study showed: 1) The procedures of applying media, there are: showing playing the short film media, checking student’s understanding, repeating material explanation, giving assignments related to the media and checking student’s work and conducting evaluations related to the showing of the film. 2) teacher’s challenges in preparing animated short films, there are: getting relevant animated short films, finding interesting and easy understanding animation and determining the right duration, then teacher’s challenges in applying media are: student’s lack of enthusiasm for the material, teacher’s difficulties in time management and infrastructure problems. 3) Students perceive that the media used by the teacher gave positive responses to speaking skills such as increasing pronunciation, making learning enjoyable, stimulating English speaking skills and facilitating understanding of the material.

Abstract

This  article aims at classifying translation shifts of English verb phrase into Indonesian and describing the application of the translation shift in translation teaching. The data are in the forms phrases, clauses, and sentences containing verb phrases and their Indonesian transalation. The data were collected using content analysis, questionnaire, and interview. They were analyzed using Catford theory of translation shifts. The first result indicates that there are three translation shifts. They are structure shift, rank or level shift, and intra-system shift. Second finding shows that there are thirteen steps in translation teaching. Most procedures in teaching translation activated students as the approaches used were project-based learning and students centered learning. The process of teaching and learning by applying research results and doing directly as found in the examples makes it easier for students to understand the material provided.Keywords: verb phrase; translation shift; translation teaching

Abstract

Orphanages need good services in cultivating character and scientific competence and getting support from counseling staff to express themselves freely, independently, flexibly, progressively, and happily. Character strengthening, knowledge, and counseling are necessary for orphanages to produce a superior generation. This service aims to cultivate an independent student profile through 3K (character, knowledge, and counseling) at the Putri Aisyiyah II Kadipiro Orphanage, Surakarta. Methods for implementing services include mapping and collecting data on initial conditions for partners, outreach with partners, mentoring children, monitoring and evaluation, and preparing reports and publications. The results of this service include 1) increasing the learning outcomes of students, 2) minimizing cases of violations committed by orphanage children, and 3) knowing the psychological/mental condition of orphanage children through psychological testing and counseling activities. From this service, it is hoped that we can optimize the abilities and solve the problems of orphaned children by cultivating 3K with a scientific concept integrated with character, which is the foundation of an independent student profile.

Abstract

This study explores the role of rubrics in improving speaking skills among Generation Z students under the Merdeka Curriculum in Indonesia. By leveraging qualitative research methods, specifically in-depth interviews with experienced English language teachers, the study delves into the practical applications, benefits, and challenges of rubric implementation. The findings reveal that rubrics significantly enhance student performance by providing clear, structured, and detailed feedback, aligning with Generation Z's preference for interactive and visually engaging learning experiences. Additionally, the study highlights the compatibility of rubrics with the objectives of the Merdeka Curriculum, emphasizing student independence and creativity. These insights underscore the necessity for educators to adopt and refine rubric-based assessments to meet contemporary educational goals and the unique characteristics of modern learners.

Abstract

The research focused on students' perceptions of teaching techniques in English speaking skills at vocational high school in Kebumen. The method employed in this research is a descriptive method with a quantitative approach. The instrument used comprises 8 statement items crafted from the aspect of perception. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive statistical tests complemented by frequency distribution analysis. The sample for this research consisted of 86 students from grades XI at vocational school in Kebumen. The results showed varying perspectives among the students: Around 60.1% of students expressed positive views regarding the usefulness of diverse techniques employed in speaking practices, such as dialogues and role plays. Approximately 41.1% perceived teaching tools, including audio and visual aids, as supportive in comprehending speaking materials. Roughly 54.1% of students believed that the methods used, particularly those involving concrete examples and relevant exercises, facilitated their understanding of speaking materials. Concerning constructive feedback, 67.3% of students acknowledged its role in improving their speaking skills. Around 50.2% of the respondents supported the idea that the chosen teaching materials effectively assisted in their comprehension. A significant majority, approximately 89.9%, felt motivated to learn speaking due to the teacher's approach
