Abstract

The English Education Study Program as a place of language learning is an institution where the paradigm of foreign language learning that is still thick with the practice of linguistic colonialism is likely to still take place. This study aims to reveal the existence of this paradigm in the teaching process in the study program as a material for future changes in order to achieve widespread and flexible learning. This change will also promote local culture in foreign language learning. This study uses qualitative descriptive method as a means of revealing the necessary facts. Interviews and observations of the learning process and the interaction between lecturers and students were used as data collection tools which were analyzed using the Interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) method. The findings of this study show that the phenomenon of language colonialization is still an aspect that lecturers and students are not aware of. Its existence in the context of teaching in the English department of the Faculty of Education is still at the stage of stratification of the language used as an introduction in class, unconscious restrictions on the use of certain languages, and the widespread use of certain languages over other languages.

Abstract

Speaking is one of the four macro skills of English. It is also a productive skill that requires language learners to gain much exposure to use it. Accuracy and fluency are two elements to be used as parameters of speaking ability for foreign language learners. Apart from this, language learners still find it hard to express out their speaking ability in front of classroom as well as outside the class. Lack of self confidence, limited vocabulary acquisition, and English grammar have become obstacles for learners to develop their speaking ability. Through this hands-on workshop, we introduced three educational games, namely, hot seat, comic strip, and that’s an unusual view to students and teachers at panti Asuhan Sentosa Banjarmasin. These games are intended to make learning english more fun, to help students gain self confidence to use the language, and to boost cooperative work between students and teachers. The participants responded positively to the ideas and they would use those games as learning media.

Abstract

Learning English is indispensable from the use of games as one of the teaching media. Even, in traditional classes, where teachers are the center of information, games are sometimes introduced and played to make the classroom atmosphere more fun. Now, as the rapid growth of information technology. The forms and types of games have also evolved significantly. This is like two sides of the coin which has both positive and negative impacts on students’ learning motivation. However, this community service report just looks at the benefits of the game in the English classroom and its feasibility to be used as a catalyst to make students engaged in learning English grammar. This community service was conducted in SMAN 1 Amuntai as the host. Teachers of English from around Amuntai regency were invited to come and introduced to use Kahoot as a learning tool. They were taught how to design quizzes and exercises about grammar using this game application. The participants enjoyed it and would plan to use it as learning media for their English classes.

Abstract

User manuals are always included in the package of electronic products to make sure the optimality of devices usage. Those manuals are often delivered in English and local languages. This research is intended to measure the equivalence level of translation and also aimed at revealing the strategies of translation used in the manual. The data are taken from the user manuals of Samsung Galaxy Young GTS5360 series Mobile Phone. The manual is printed in two versions: English and Indonesian. Both of themanuals are available online on www.samsung.com. The source language (SL) data are taken from English version, as for the target language (TL) data are taken from Indonesian version. The data consist of 100 various instructions for the users. The analysis of word level equivalence is used to analyse the data. First, the writer took 100 sentences from the sources. Second, the data were then analysed to find words that is not literally equivalent with source language and to analyse the strategies which are used by thetranslator. Third, the writer then gives comments about the naturalness of translations based on the strategies used by the translator. Based on the analysis of data, the writer found that there are five strategies of translation in word level equivalence used by the translator. The strategies are: (1) translation by a more general word (super ordinate), (2) translation using more neutral word / less expressive word, (3) translation by cultural substitution, (4) translation using a loan word, and (5) translation by paraphrase using unrelated words.

Abstract

Many teachers struggle to utilize technology to create interactive, creative, and innovative learning media. They often face challenges in selecting and using the wide variety of available learning tools, which leads them to rely on traditional methods such as textbooks. Additionally, the lack of skills in using technology-based media, such as infographics, hinders their ability to enhance the quality of teaching in line with the demands of the digital era. This study aims to describe the implementation of infographic training as an alternative learning media at SMPN Satap 2 Palangka Raya. The training was designed to enhance teachers' competencies in utilizing information technology, especially within the limitations of available resources. Using the Assets-Based Community Development (ABCD) approach, the training leveraged existing facilities such as school laptops, smartphones, and premium Canva accounts. The training activities included an introduction to infographic design, hands-on practice with Canva, intensive mentoring, and an exhibition of participants' works. The results indicate that the training was conducted as planned with active teacher participation, despite technical challenges such as limited internet connectivity. This training also highlighted the importance of sustained support, such as providing adequate technological infrastructure by schools and local governments, to improve the effectiveness of similar programs in the future.

Abstract

This community service program aimed to enhance children’s motivation to learn English in Gunung Mas Village through the implementation of a fun learning approach involving a foreign speaker. The approach emphasizes enjoyment, active engagement, and hands-on experience as the core of the learning process. The “Kelas Pelita” program consisted of three interactive sessions focusing on the topics of the alphabet, numbers, colors, fruits and body parts, integrating four main elements: Game-Based Learning (GBL), Communicative Language Teaching (CLT), Total Physical Response (TPR), and the use of digital media. The results showed that students became more enthusiastic, confident, and willing to communicate in English. Direct interaction with a foreign speaker from Yemen provided authentic language exposure and increased students’ curiosity toward English as a global communication tool. Through the fun learning approach, this activity successfully created a positive, interactive, and meaningful learning atmosphere for children in a rural area.

Abstract

This study aims to design a culturally-based English textbook for Performing Arts Education students. The research applies Culturally Relevant Pedagogy (CRP) and Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) to the ADDIE framework to improve English competence and local culture appreciation. A needs analysis of 36 students found that 82.35% have basic English skills and low speaking confidence. Multimedia elements, culturally relevant themes, and practical ways integrating English learning to artistic surroundings were popular with students. Experts validated content relevancy and linguistic accuracy but suggested simplifying idioms and adding cultural examples for accessibility. Two chapters' initial trials were moderately effective, scoring 3.39 for relevance and 3.89 for clarity. Changes improved cultural integration and interactivity. Two trials with six amended chapters showed considerable gains in clarity and relevance, scoring 4.53 and 4.17, respectively. Contextual vocabulary, realistic grammar exercises, and local-global cultural balance impressed students. The study found that CRP and CLIL in ESP materials improve English and cultural awareness. Long-term effects and digital tools for accessibility and interaction should be further explored.

Abstract

This research investigates the use of speech acts by Levi Kane, the main character in the 2025 romantic action-thriller film The Gorge, through the framework of Searle’s Speech Act Theory. The study aims to classify and analyze Levi’s utterances based on their types, forms, and pragmatic levels to understand how language reflects his identity and emotional transformation. Employing a descriptive qualitative method, 170 utterances were analyzed from the film’s official transcript. The utterances were categorized into five speech act types (assertive, directive, commissive, expressive, and declarative), identified as either direct or indirect, and evaluated according to three pragmatic levels: locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary. The findings reveal that assertive speech acts are the most dominant, followed by directives, expressives, and commissives. No declaratives were found, which reflects Levi’s role as an executor rather than a formal authority. Direct speech acts significantly outnumber indirect ones, illustrating his concise and action-oriented communication style. At the pragmatic level, illocutionary acts dominate, suggesting that Levi’s speech is highly intentional and performative. These results indicate that Levi’s speech patterns mirror his shift from a reserved soldier to an emotionally engaged individual. The study highlights how pragmatic analysis can be used to trace psychological depth and character development in film, providing valuable insights for linguists, educators, and scholars of media discourse
