Abstract

Introduction:The Dental Public Health Warrior (DPHW) project is a social activity which provides a creative, fun, and interactive dental health education throughout elementary schools in Keputih Area-Surabaya,Indonesia. Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine the effectivity of those projects in increasing the Performance Treatment Index of elementary school’s student. PTI score used to measure the willingness to treat their teeth. Materials and Methods:In this pre experimental study (pretest and posttest only design), subjects were 54 elementary students (4th grade) . All subjects were educated by the DPHW team and their DMF-t score and PTI score were collected by calibrated dentists before the education and in 3 months after the education. Results: The mean of DMF-t score increase from 6,7 to 6,9. The mean of PTI score increase from 3,7 to 9,5 . Wilcoxon analysis showed there is significant different between before and after education (p= 0,001). Conclusion:. The DPHW project can be effectively used to increase the Performance Treatment Index of elementary school’s student. The increase of PTI indekx means there is increase in willingness to treat their teeth.

Abstract

This community service program was carried out at KB-TK Sepuluh November Surabaya with the aim of improving teachers’ capacity in developing co-curricular learning plans related to dental health for early childhood students. Initial observations and dental examinations showed that the prevalence of dental caries among students was still high, and previous oral health education activities were not performed routinely. Therefore, a workshop was conducted to strengthen teachers’ knowledge and skills regarding dental health education and the creation of structured, interactive co-curricular learning plans. The workshop consisted of theoretical material on early childhood learning approaches and practical demonstrations on proper toothbrushing techniques. Teachers then developed co-curricular lesson plans and practiced guiding students in group toothbrushing activities. The results showed that teachers demonstrated increased understanding and were able to produce applicable learning plans and implement them confidently. This program is expected to support the sustainability of dental health education in schools and contribute to improving children’s dental hygiene behaviors.

Abstract

Background: Softliner is commonly used to provide convenience for edentulous patients. However, the use of softliner can cause denture stomatitis due to colonization of Candida albicans. Sargassum sp. contains active compounds of steroids, alkaloids, phenols, triterpenoids, act as antibacterial and antifungal. The use of Sargassum sp. in the form of effervescent as a denture cleanser can prevent denture stomatitis, and it’s expected not to affect the compressive strength. This study aimed to study the concentration variation of Sargassum sp. effervescent towards antifungal and compressive strength silicone based softlinerMethod: 20 sampels of silicone based softliner (10x3x2mm) divided into 5 groups. K(-) soaked in sterilled aquadest; K(+) in Polident solution; P1 in 10% effervescent Sargassum sp. solution; P2 20% ; P3 40%, for 15minutes. Candida calculated by colony counter (CFU/ml). Compressive strength measured by Universal Testing Machine.Result: Candida albicans in the K+ group is the lowest, while the K- group shows the highest value. In P1, P2, P3 group the value of Candida albicans is higher than K+ group, but much lower than K-. The compressive strength of K+ group shows the lowest value but in P3 group shows the highest value compared to other groups. Conclusion: The 10% concentration of effervescent extract Sargassum sp. is effective in reducing the number of Candida albicans in silicone based softliner compared to the K- group. The most effective concentration of effervescent extract Sargassum sp. in reducing the Candida albicans’ growth is 40%. The higher concentration of Sargassum sp. resulting in higher compressive strength.

Abstract

Background: Children with autism have difficulty controlling the movement of tongue that food often cannot perfectly swallowed . Parents play a very important role in maintaining dental and oral hygiene for children with autism. The behavior of children with autism is strongly influenced by the parent’s level of education. Objective: to determine the correlation between parent’s level of education and the level of oral hygiene in children with autism (measured by OHI-S). Methods: This type of research is analytic observational, with a cross sectional approach. Simple random sampling technique was performed. The total sample was 23 students of Mutiara Hati Surabaya Autism Special School. OH Index form by WHO was used to collect the data of dental hygiene and a questionnaire form by RISKESDAS was used to collect data of parent’s level of education. Results: There is a significant correlation between the parent’s level of education and OHI-S in children with autism (<0.05) ,R = -0.49 means the correlation is sufficient. The lower the level of dental and oral hygiene the higher the level of education of their parents. Conclusion: There is a correlation between the parent’s level of education and dental and oral hygiene in children with autism at Mutiara Hati Special School.

Abstract

Background: The oral mucosa soft tissue can develop white, red lesions, vesiculobullous lesions, and ulcerated lesions as a result of systemic disease. The age of patients with systemic diseases affects the profile of oral soft tissue abnormalities. In developed countries, roughly 60% of young people with systemic diseases have at least one oral lesion. Hypertension is one of the systemic diseases that can cause clinical manifestation in oral soft tissue mucosa. Objective: To discover the profile of soft tissue abnormalities of the oral cavity in youth with a normal blood pressure and hypertension in the Karangpilang district. Methods: The type of this research is analytical observational. The method is that blood pressure is measured in each sample, then grouped into 2 (normal blood pressure group and hypertension group). Furthermore, each group was examined with an intra-oral examination that will be carried out to determine the condition of the soft tissue of the oral cavity in each sample. Processing and analyzing the research data using the Spearmen Correlation Test method. Result:  There is a strong positive relationship between the systolic pressure and the number of soft tissue abnormalities in the oral cavity. Conclusion: The oral cavity's soft tissues are frequently obtained during examinations of patients with elevated blood pressure.

Abstract

Background: Dental health in preschool children is an important aspect that should be introduced early. However, cognitive limitations and short attention spans at this age require educational methods appropriate to their developmental stage. Pojok Sikat Gigi is an activity that consists of various health promotion and preventive strategies carried out at TK Sepuluh November Surabaya, targeting teachers, parents, and students. One strategy is dental health education through storytelling, using hand puppets and interactive activities. Objective: This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of dental health education with storytelling and interactive activities on improving preschool students’ knowledge of dental health. Method: 34 students aged between 5-7 were the sample in this research. This was a pre-experimental research with a pre- and post-test design. The pretest score was measured through a Q&A session before education. The posttest score was measured by asking students to write down their answers on a piece of paper, guided by the researcher who read the same questions. The pre- and post-test knowledge scores were compared using the Wilcoxon statistical test to assess whether there was a significant difference after the educational intervention. Results: The mean pretest score was 2.24, and the posttest score was 5 (maximum score was 5). The Wilcoxon test value was sig=0.00<0.05, meaning that there was a significant difference between the scores before and after education. Conclusion: The storytelling method and interactive activities are effective in improving preschool students’ knowledge of dental health.
