Abstract

Background: The covid-19 pandemic has an impact on many sectors include the education sector. Dental education students are not only given academic knowledge but also need to be trained for their dental practice skills. Various obstacles during covid-19 pandemic require educational institutions to make innovations to maintain the quality of graduates. One of the innovations that can be implemented is blended learning. Blended learning combines online methods for lecture substitution and face-to-face methods for clinical activities on phantoms. The indicator of success of this method is by getting pass in the National Competency Exam for Dentist (UKMP2DG).  Objective: To determine the effectiveness of the blended learning method as a learning innovation during the covid 19 pandemic at the Faculty of Dentistry, Hang Tuah University Surabaya. Methods: This is an observational analytic study by comparing the percentage of UKMP2DG’s passing rates during the period before the covid 19 pandemic (2019) and during the implementation of the blended learning method (2021 and 2022). Data analysed using one-way Anova with an error of 5%. Results: The results of oneway Anova showed p value = 0.120> 0.05. Conclusion: There is no significant difference between the number of UKMP2DG passing rates from 2019, 2021 and 2022 means blended learning method can provide the same number of pass rate as other previous methods.

Abstract

Background: The most common oral soft tissue disease at RSGM Nala Husada is recurrent aphthous stomatitis. RAS is a condition marked by inflammation of the orakl mucosa, which manifests as one or more ulcers that recur over time. RAS can be influenced by various predisposing factors, with stress being a common trigger. Stress refers to the body's reaction to challenges or pressures that lead to uncomfortable feelings, which are perceived differently by each person. Objective: To determine the relationship between stress in patients with recurrent aphthous stomatitis at RSGM Nala Husada. Materials and Methods: The population and samples of all RAS patients who visited RSGM Nala Husada were taken by purposive sampling with a total of 100 people. The level of stress experienced by a person measured from the Depresion Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS) questionnaire which consists of 42 questions. Data on RAS were taken from subjective examination and intra-oral examination. Processing of data using correlation test with Spearman test in SPSS program. Results: The results of the Spearman test are a weak correlation, which can be seen from R= 0.115 (Sig = 0.175.> 0.05). A positive R value means that the relationship is in the same direction. Conclusion: In this study there was no significant relationship between psychological stress in RAS patients at RSGM Nala Husada. Therefore, it is necessary to review further the severity, duration and intensity of stress that can trigger the emergence of RAS and reconsider other predisposing factors related to RAS besides stress.

Abstract

This community service program was carried out at KB-TK Sepuluh November Surabaya with the aim of improving teachers’ capacity in developing co-curricular learning plans related to dental health for early childhood students. Initial observations and dental examinations showed that the prevalence of dental caries among students was still high, and previous oral health education activities were not performed routinely. Therefore, a workshop was conducted to strengthen teachers’ knowledge and skills regarding dental health education and the creation of structured, interactive co-curricular learning plans. The workshop consisted of theoretical material on early childhood learning approaches and practical demonstrations on proper toothbrushing techniques. Teachers then developed co-curricular lesson plans and practiced guiding students in group toothbrushing activities. The results showed that teachers demonstrated increased understanding and were able to produce applicable learning plans and implement them confidently. This program is expected to support the sustainability of dental health education in schools and contribute to improving children’s dental hygiene behaviors.
