Abstract

Background and purpose: The incidence of diarrhea among underfive years children in Indonesia is considerably high. Studies exploring risk factors of diarrhea have been extensively conducted in Indonesia. However, the association between handwashing practices of the mother and quality of toilets with diarrhea among under-five years children are still inconsistent across studies. This study aims to examine the association between handwashing practices of the mother, quality of toilets and the episodes of diarrhea among under-five years children. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted involving 104 under-five years children in Selagalas Village. Samples were selected using systematic random sampling. Data were collected in July 2017 by observation and face-to-face interviews using questionnaires. Bivariate analysis and logistic regression were conducted to examine the association between hand washing practices, quality of toilets and diarrhea among under-five years children. Results: We found more than half of under-five years children (64.42%) had experienced at least one episode of diarrhea over the last three months. We found a significant association between diarrhea with unhygienic toilets with an adjusted odds ratio (AOR) of 2.84 and poor handwashing practices of the mother with AOR of 2.46, however, both have a lower limit of AOR confidence interval that close to one, namely 95%CI: 1.05-5.97 and 95%CI: 1.03-5.87. Conclusion: Poor hand washing practices and unhygienic toilets are associated with the episodes of diarrhea among under-five years children, however, both have a low programmatic importance. Further study should be carried out to understand the association between handwashing practices and quality of toilets with diarrhea. Despite of the low programmatic importance, good hand washing practice should be promoted and access to toilets that meet the health standard must be enhanced.

Abstract

Background and purpose: Anaemia among pregnant women is still being a public health problem in Indonesia. This study aimed to determine association between iron folate consumption, energy and iron adequacy level with prevalence of anaemia among pregnant women. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study conducted in eight community health centers in Jember, East Java with 128 pregnant women selected using stratified random sampling from pregnant women’s cohort in each primary health center. Data were collected from interviews using semi quantitative food frequency questionnaire, chronic energy deficiency status by measuring the middle upper arm circumference (MUAC), and data of haemoglobin levels with Easy Touch GCHb (Bioptic Technology Inc., China). Data were analysed bivariate by chi-square and multivariate by logistic regression. Results: This study found that the prevalence of anaemia among pregnant women in Jember was 60.16% (95%CI: 51.76-68.56). Multivariate analysis resulted that variables which significantly reduce risk of anaemia among pregnant women were: household income (adjusted OR=0.09; 95%CI: 0.03-0.51), iron folate consumption (adjusted OR=0.16; 95%CI: 0.04-0.69), adequacy of energy (adjusted OR=0.06; 95%CI: 0.01-0.33), and iron adequacy level (adjusted OR=0.11; 95%CI: 0.01-0.90). Conclusion: Household income, intake food with high energy and iron, and also iron folate consumption significantly reduced the risk of anaemia among pregnant women.

Abstract

Background and purpose: Optimal nutrition status will lead to health and productive adolescent. Recently, double burden of nutritional status has occurred among adolescent, including underweight and overweight. This study assessed that relationship among adolescent in urban area. Methods: This study was cross-sectional survey with a total sample of 75 female students who were randomly selected from three high schools. Data were collected by interviews using a structured questionnaire, Semi-quantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire (SQFFQ) and Adolescent Physical Activity Recall Questionnaires (APARQ). Anthropometric measurement was done for height, weight, middle upper arm and stomach circumference. Data of food consumption were analyzed using software Nutri-Survey, WHO Anthro Plus. Thecorrelation of risk factor and nutritional status were tested by linier regression. Results: This study supports the evidence of double burden in nutritional status among high school female students. Despite 18,67% of chronic energy deficiency, 8% students were overweight. Consumption of snack and fast food was also frequent, that may relate to high level of fat sufficiency among them. Variable significantly associated in all indicators of nutritional status was weight control (p<0.05). Physical activities had no significant relationship to nutritional status. Conclusion: There was double burden of nutritional status among high school female students especially overweight. Weight control had significant relationship toward nutritional status, while physical activities had no significant relationship to nutrition status.

Abstract

Background and purpose: Picky eating behaviour in toddlers may lead to a lack of nutritional intake and affect their nutritional status. This study aims to determine the correlation of picky eating with the nutritional status of toddlers aged 24-59 months in Denpasar City. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study of 100 toddlers and mothers in Denpasar City in 2020. The variables collected were mother's education, occupation, family income, children’s age, gender, history of infectious diseases, eating behaviour, and nutritional status. The data were collected by interview using questionnaire for socio-demographic characteristics and the Children Eating Behaviour Questionnaire (CEBQ). Bodyweight and height were measured using Camry and Microtoise digital scales. The data were analyzed including descriptive analysis and chi-square test, Results: We found almost two third (63%) of the toddlers had picky eating behaviour. Most toddlers had normal nutritional status (87%), while 9% of them were stunted. Most toddlers had a poor appetite (85%) and left food on their plates after eating (54%). The majority do not want to taste food that was never introduced (66%) and refuse the main meal after eating snacks (68%). We found no significant association between eating behaviours and nutritional status of the toddlers. Conclusion: There was no correlation between picky eating behaviour and the nutritional status of toddlers. Picky eaters do not refuse food consistently, hence it can balance the nutritional needs. Therefore, providing information and practice regarding nutritious food is still important, as well as regular monitoring of children’s nutritional status.

Abstract

Background and purpose: Coverage of exclusive breastfeeding in Badung District is lower than the Bali Provincial and national level. Breastfeeding Support Groups (BSG) have been proven effective to overcome breastfeeding barriers in several developing countries. This study aims to explore the acceptance of breastfeeding mothers toward the BSG Program in Badung District, Bali Province. Methods: A qualitative study with an exploratory approach was conducted in Kekeran and Punggul Villages, two villages where BSG was first implemented in Badung District. In-depth interviews were conducted with fifteen breastfeeding mothers as the key informants and supporting informants, including two village officials, two village midwives and two cadres. Interviews were recorded, transcribed, analysed thematically, and presented in a narrative form. Results: Breastfeeding mothers in Kekeran and Punggul Villages showed positive attitudes and thoughts by stating that BSG is essential. The acceptance was shown by their willingness to attend and participate fully and enthusiastically. Mother's good knowledge about BSG and the success of exclusive breastfeeding led to high motivation to participate in the program. Other supportive factors were positive experiences, mainly the direct practice of breastfeeding, and support from in-laws, husbands, midwives, and village officials, while the inhibitory factors were myths and social sanction. Conclusion: BSG was well accepted by mothers with good knowledge and perception, positive experiences, high motivation, and positive social supports as supporting factors. It is recommended to develop activities according to mothers' needs adopted to local culture and customs, as well as to involve multi-stakeholders.

Abstract

Stunting is one of the triple malnutrition burdens in Indonesia, beside obesity and micronutrient deficiency. Stunting is a reflection of long-term undernourishment which resulted in stunted growth. National Health Survey Data showed the reduction of stunting rate among under-five children in Indonesia from 37.2% in 2013 to 30.4% in 2018 and 21.5% in 2023. Despite this decreasing trend, the national stunting rate was still above the World Health Organization threshold of 20%. There is also a wide discrepancy between provinces in Indonesia with stunting rate ranges from 7.2% in Bali to 39.2% in Papua. Back in 2011, there was a movement by 28 countries including Indonesia regarding the 1000 first day of life (1000-days) program. This was an approach targeting children during their 1000 first day of life through specific and sensitive nutritional interventions. The 1000-days is started during pregnancy until the child is two years old. This movement involved related stakeholders from national and sub-national level including ministries, community organization, private sectors, professional organization, academics and others.

Abstract

Women of Reproductive Age (WUS) are one of the high-risk groups for anemia. Anemia in WUS is caused by direct factors (nutritional intake and infectious diseases) and indirect factors (ecological factors). Research on the ecological factors of the incidence of anemia in WUS in Bali is still lacking and the results vary. The purpose of this study was to describe the consumption habits and ecological factors of women of childbearing age (WUS) in Sidemen District, Karangasem Regency, Bali. This study is a descriptive study with a cross-sectional design conducted in Sidemen District, Karangasem Regency. The sample was selected by total sampling. The number of respondents who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria was 186 people. Ecological data factors were collected by interview using a structured questionnaire, while consumption pattern data was collected using a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Data were analyzed descriptively and presented narratively. The results of sociodemographic characteristics show that the majority of WUS are in the age group of 20-35 years (51.8%), graduated from SD/MI (46.7%), are self-employed (55.9%), and have income <UMK Kab. Karangasem (Rp 2,555,469.09) (93.5%). The most accessible sources of food, health facilities, and water sources are food stalls (99%), puskesmas (81.7%), and springs (51.4%). As many as 55.4% of WUS have never accessed information related to anemia, 68.2% WUS have less frequent protein consumption, and 82.3% eating habbits is not diverse Keywords: Ecological Factor, Women of Reproductive Age, Sidemen Regency
