Abstract

Mahogany seeds have been used in the community as an antihypertensive and antioxidant. Antihypertensive and antioxidant efficacy of mature mahogany seeds has been proven in hypertensive rats. The purpose of this study was to compare the antihypertensive and antioxidant effect of mature mahogany seeds extract with young mahogany seeds extract. This study is a laboratory experimental design with pre-test and post-test design control groups, with Wistar rats as samples. Thirty rats were divided into 5 groups, each group consist of 6 rats. The control group was given saline every day as a rat model of hypertension. 1-4 treatment groups were each given NaCl and water extract of young mahogany seeds for treatment 1, the ethanol extract of young mahogany seeds as treatment 2, water extract of mature mahogany seeds as treatment 3 and ethanol extract of mature mahogany seeds as treatments 4. Dosages of extract mahogany seeds is 100 mg / head / day for 4 weeks. Before treatment, evaluation of rat blood pressure with special sphygmomanometer was held, and examination of blood MDA as a pre-test data. Further evaluation of MDA and SOD blood pressure are at the end of the study. The data were tested by ANOVA to see the difference between the groups. The results showed a decrease in blood pressure and levels of MDA were significant in all treatments (p <0.05) compared with control as well as an increase in SOD were significantly (p <0.05). The ethanol extract of mature mahogany seeds showed the most excellent antihypertensive and antioxidant properties (p <0.05). From these results, it can be concluded that the ethanol extract of mature mahogany seeds is better than young mahogany seeds extract as an antihypertensive and antioxidant in hypertensive rats. Keywords – antioxidants, hypertensive rats, mature and young mahogany seeds

Abstract

Lung carcinoma is one of the most common malignancies metastasized to bone, as much as 30-40% of lung malignancies metastasize to bone in the course of the disease. Carcinoembryonic Antigen (CEA) and Cancer Antigen 125 (CA 125) are tumor markers often used to assess lung malignancy. Eventhough the character of tumor markers are less sensitive and specific, some evidence address an increase in these tumor markers in the case of lung malignancies which metastasize to bone. The purpose of this study is to prove an increase in the levels of tumor markers CEA and CA 125 in lung carcinoma with bone metastases compare to lung carcinoma without bone metastases. A cross sectional study consecutively by reviewing lung carcinoma with bone metastases and without bone metastases in patient’s medical record between 2013-2021 at RSUP Sanglah Denpasar. Of 50 lung carcinoma patients (25 patients with bone metastases and 25 patients without bone metastases), levels CEA and CA 125 tumor markers were processed using SPSS. The results showed levels of CEA were significantly higher in lung carcinoma with bone metastases (p=0,028), but levels of CA 125 were not significantly higher in lung carcinoma with bone metastases (p=0,796). The results of the study concluded that levels of CEA could be used as a valuable marker to assess lung malignancy which metastasized to bone in clinical application. Abstract

Posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) avulsion fractures are rare but significant injuries that can lead to knee instability and degeneration if untreated. Treatment options range from conservative management to surgical fixation. The objective of this study is to evaluate and compare the outcomes of different treatment modalities for posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) avulsion fractures, with a focus on surgical interventions, specifically open surgery and arthroscopy. Methods: A systematic literature search was conducted using the MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library databases from August 17, 2003 to August 17, 2023. Studies included involved patients with PCL avulsion fractures treated via arthroscopic or open fixation. Data was extracted on demographics, surgical approaches, outcomes (Lysholm scores), and complications. The Coleman methodology score was applied to assess study quality by scoring factors like study size, design, follow-up, and outcome measures, and only studies scoring ≥60 were included for data analysis. Results: Out of 1,470 studies, 12 met the inclusion criteria. Lysholm scores ranged from 85 to 100 for open approaches and 80 to 100 for arthroscopic approaches. Arthroscopic treatment showed fewer complications, such as infections or hardware irritation, while both approaches demonstrated favorable outcomes. Postoperative limitations in motion were observed in both groups, with a slightly higher incidence in the arthroscopic cohort. Conclusions: Both arthroscopic and open surgical approaches effectively treat PCL avulsion fractures, with arthroscopy showing a slight advantage in postoperative outcomes and fewer complications. However, open surgery with a small open procedure also offers satisfactory results, particularly for complex fractures.

Abstract

Introduction: Displaced supracondylar fracture in children is a challenging injury that may result in impaired functional and cosmetic outcome if not well-treated. Utilization of Closed Reduction and Percutaneus Pinning (CRPP) increased for this pathology, some authors believe ORIF results better anatomical reduction and lower rate of loss of reduction. Study aims to compare CRPP and ORIF for pediatric supracondylar humerus fracture. Method: Systematic review was conducted based on PRISMA guideline. Inclusion criteria were age less than 18 years old, comparing CRPP and ORIF for Supracondylar Humerus Fractures Gartland Type II, II.Studies of one surgical technique, Gartland type I, case reports were excluded. For meta-analysis, 6 studies were included and fixed effect model used to pool the result. In each study, mean difference (MD) with 95% confidence interval (CI) was calculated for dichotomous outcomes using Review Manager. Result: Total of 252 patients aged 0-15 years old were included. CRPP more often performed than ORIF. Satisfactory outcomes measured by Flynn’s criteria were achieved in 87.74% in CRPP and 86.73% in ORIF patient group, indicating significant difference (Heterogeneity, I2 = 23%; WMD, 1.26; 0.58 to 2.73; P =0.56). Conclusion: Current systematic review and meta-analysis suggest that for displaced supracondylar humerus fractures, ORIF offers a comparable functional and cosmetic outcome compared to CRPP.
