Abstract

The method of da'wah represents a systematic approach to delivering religious material to achieve specific objectives. The implementation of da'wah activities requires appropriate and effective strategies. The process of conveying the message of da'wah must be conducted accurately and relevantly to the intended audience. The legal basis for da'wah has been established in the Qur'an and Hadith. Referring to Surah An-Nahl verse 125 of the Qur'an, Muslims are not only commanded to carry out da'wah but are also provided guidelines regarding the methodology of its implementation. This verse outlines that da'wah should be conducted in a wise manner and in harmony with the principles of religious teachings. This research examines the da'wah strategy of KH. Lanre Said, a prominent Islamic figure and preacher in Sulawesi, based on the book "JEJAK DAKWAH KH. LANRE SAID Ulama Pejuang dari DI/TII hingga Era Reformasi" (The Da'wah Trail of KH. LANRE SAID: A Warrior Scholar from DI/TII to the Reformation Era). This study employs a library research method with a qualitative approach. Data is collected through observation, documentation, and interviews, with the researcher as the primary instrument. The research focuses on KH. Lanre Said's da'wah journey from the Dutch colonial period to the establishment of his Islamic boarding school. The researcher's tasks include determining the research focus, selecting informants, collecting data, evaluating data quality, analyzing, interpreting, and drawing conclusions based on findings. The approach used is a qualitative method, where data is processed in the form of verbal descriptions. The aim is to present the research results clearly and comprehensively, both for the researcher and readers, and to avoid ambiguity in understanding the research findings.

Abstract

Islamic civilization has developed dynamically and continuously interacted with local cultures through a selective process of acculturation. In Indonesia, particularly in South Sulawesi, the tradition of mappatabe'-which involves saying “tabe'” while slightly bowing as a sign of respect toward elders-represents a clear example of the integration between local culture and Islamic values. Nevertheless, this practice has generated fiqh-related debates concerning the limits of human respect so that it does not resemble acts of worship such as rukūʿ or sujūd, which are exclusively devoted to Allah SWT. This study aims to examine and analyze the perspectives of the four Sunni schools of Islamic jurisprudence Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi‘i, and Hanbali) regarding the mappatabe' tradition as a local cultural practice within the framework of Islamic law. The research employs a library-based qualitative method with a normative-fiqh approach, supported by ex post facto and descriptive methods to explore causal relations and to describe the practice of mappatabe' in its social and legal contexts. Data were collected from primary sources, including the Qur'an, the Prophet's hadiths, classical fiqh texts of the four schools, works of contemporary scholars, and relevant religious fatwas, complemented by secondary sources such as academic books and scholarly journal articles. The findings indicate that the mappatabe' tradition is fundamentally permissible as long as it is understood as a form of social etiquette and respect, does not involve elements of servitude or worship, does not resemble the physical acts of rukuʿ or sujud, and does not promote discrimination among individuals. Therefore, mappatabe' can be regarded as a form of cultural acculturation that aligns with the principles of Islamic law and reflects noble moral values in social life.

Abstract

This article aims to examine the religious identity of the minority Muslim community in Singapore, a secular, multi-religious state with a Muslim population of approximately 15% (most of whom are Malay). Once the center of Islam in Southeast Asia during the Malacca Sultanate, Singapore has developed into a developed nation following its independence from the Malaysian federation in 1965. Despite its perceived neutrality towards various religions, the government has implemented policies that limit the spread of Islam, such as a ban on loud calls to prayer, the use of headscarves in public schools and government institutions, and a restructuring of propaganda that impacts the homogenous Muslim community. The goal is to maintain social harmony across ethnicities (with a Chinese majority) and religions (Buddhists 33%, Christians 18%). To adapt, Muslims formed organizations such as the independent but government-recognized Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (MUIS), which manages fatwas, hajj, zakat, waqf (endowments), mosques (70 units), and madrasas. MUIS also ensures that religious sermons are conducted with tolerance and inclusivity, which includes monitoring foreign preachers. In addition to MUIS, PERGAS and PERDAUS exist, which focus on Islamic education. Overall, the minority Muslim community in Singapore demonstrates the resilience of its identity by adapting to secularism, while contributing to national diversity, despite limitations to prevent potential radicalization. This document emphasizes the importance of religion in both the private and public spheres, referencing international minority rights treaties such as the ICCPR.

Abstract

This study examines the mediation of modern Islamic knowledge through library services in Japan as a response to the increasing demand for Islamic information within a multicultural and predominantly non-Muslim society. This topic is significant because libraries play a strategic role not only as information centers but also as spaces for intercultural and interreligious dialogue in fostering a moderate, inclusive, and academically grounded understanding of Islam. This research employs a literature review method by examining scholarly sources such as books, journal articles, research reports, and library policy documents relevant to modern Islam and library services in Japan. Data collection was conducted through a systematic literature search, source selection based on relevance and credibility, and thematic categorization of the reviewed materials. The data were analyzed using content analysis to identify patterns, concepts, and forms of mediation of Islamic knowledge within library services. The findings indicate that the development of multilingual collections, the provision of academic resources on modern Islam, and information literacy programs are the main strategies used by libraries to mediate Islamic knowledge. Libraries in Japan contribute to presenting a contextual and scholarly understanding of Islam.

Abstract

Islamization in Sambas, West Kalimantan, represents a historical and evolving process influenced by trade routes, the political dynamics of local kingdoms, and the transmission of Islamic knowledge through networks of scholars and local intellectuals. This process extended beyond the mere dissemination of religious teachings, encompassing significant social, cultural, and educational transformations within the community. A central figure in this Islamization process was Muhammad Basiuni Imran (1885–1976), the Maharaja Imam of the Sambas Sultanate, who played a pivotal role in reforming Islamic education and strengthening religious understanding among the local population. This article employs a historical-qualitative approach and library research to trace the trajectory of Islamization in Sambas while analyzing Basiuni Imran’s contributions within the socio-cultural context of the region. The findings reveal that Basiuni Imran’s thought reinforced Islamization through the modernization of Islamic education, the integration of Sharia with local customs, and the establishment of adaptive religious structures, thereby significantly shaping the religious life of the Sambas community from the colonial period to the early years of Indonesia’s independence.

Abstract

This study examines the tradition of wearing Mispa among the Bugis community in Bulu-Bulu Village, Tonra District, following the performance of the Hajj, from the perspectives of Islamic law and the sociology of religious law. The study aims to explore the social, cultural, and religious foundations underlying the persistence of the Mispa tradition among female pilgrims, as well as to analyze the normative tension between customary practices and Islamic legal prescriptions regarding aurat (modesty requirements). This research employs a qualitative field research method using normative-juridical and empirical approaches, with data collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The findings reveal that the tradition of wearing Mispa functions not merely as an item of clothing but as a symbol of honor (siri’), spiritual commitment, and a marker of social identity within Bugis society. The tradition also encompasses socio-economic and cultural dimensions through the involvement of local artisans and constitutes an integral part of post-Hajj cultural expression. However, from the perspective of Islamic law, the practice of wearing Mispa, particularly the use of transparent fabric, raises normative concerns, as it potentially contradicts Islamic prescriptions regarding the covering of aurat. These findings highlight the existence of a dynamic negotiation between customary law and Islamic law, underscoring the importance of cultural and contextual approaches in responding to local religious practices within the demands of Islamic normative frameworks.
