Abstract

Many people choose alternative medicines for Diabetes Mellitus (DM) disorders, such as herbal plants to suppress the occurrence of the disease widely. In general, DM occurs when the pancreas doesn't produce enough insulin, or when the body can't effectively use the insulin which it produces. The use of medicinal plants to treat various diseases has shown minimal side effects. Indonesia is one of the countries that has used plants as traditional medicine since ancient times. In Indonesia, thousands of species of medicinal plants have been studied to address health problems. Among the medicinal plants that have been studied is the Neem plant (Azadirachta indica A. Juss) which has been shown to cure various diseases. This review article describes the potential of the Neem plant as an antidiabetic. The results of this literature review, in the form of Neem herbal extracts, have quite good potential as an antidiabetic because they contain several compounds such as meliacinolin, azachdirichtin, gliserid oil, acetyl oxyturanoe acid and other compounds that can also act as antidiabetic.

Abstract

Abstract

As the enzyme responsible for the uric acid formation, Xanthine oxidase was considered to be a therapeutic target for hyperuricemic treatment. This study was carried out to assess the potential of caryophyllene, and its derivates usually present in the natural product to inhibit Xanthine oxidase. The molecular docking using Autodock Tool and Biovia Discovery Studio was conducted to visualize the molecular interaction and to reveal the structure-activity relationship of those compounds. The results showed that the derivates of caryophyllene showed a higher affinity to Xanthine Oxide than Allopurinol. Among those all, caryophyllene oxide has the most stable bonding to xanthine oxide. Structure-activity relationship analysis showed that the chemical properties of the compound affected the affinity and molecular interaction to the enzyme as the target site in this study. The number of double bonds, substituents position, conformational structure related to steric hindrance, and the presence of lactone ring were assumed to influence the xanthine oxide inhibitory activity of caryophyllene derivates.

Abstract

Calophyllum inophyllum Linn. known as nyamplung is one of tropical plants widely grown in Indonesia. This plant reported has various chemical compound responsible to treat various deseases and disorders. Antioxidant activity is one of properties that has not been revelad extensively. This study aimed to evaluate antioxidant activity of Calophyllum inophyllum seed fractions using DPPH radical scavenging. Fractination was done gradually by liquid-liquid partition using N-hexane, ethyl acetate and aquadest as solvent. The phytochemical contents of each fraction were analyzed using AlCl3, FeCl3 and Lieberman-Burchard as dyeing reagents. Antioxidant activity was evaluated qualitative and quantitatively. The obtained results showed that N-hexane, ethyl acetate and aquadest fractions contained flavonoids, phenolics, terpenoid and steroid compound. All fractions also revealed antioxidant properties. Quantitatively, N-hexane fraction has the strongest anioxidant properties. This result might imply due to non-polar compound in the seeds dominantly.
