Abstract

Misconceptions are common among students when solving mathematics problems and, if left unaddressed, may hinder their ability to understand the material. This study seeks to design and develop diagnostic test instruments—comprising questions and questionnaires—on algebra topics using the Appsheet application. The objectives are to assess the development process, feasibility, and effectiveness of the instruments, as well as to identify challenges faced during implementation. The research employed a Design Research approach with a development studies type, consisting of two stages: preliminary design and formative evaluation. The instruments underwent a one-to-one trial with three students, a small-group trial with six students, and a field test involving 33 eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Margaasih. Expert validation rated the instruments as “feasible.” Data were gathered through documentation, tests, and interviews. The instruments included 10 three-tier multiple-choice questions, a closed-ended questionnaire with 13 items, and interviews with both teachers and students. Analysis revealed that 3.9% of students understood the concepts, 8.2% exhibited positive misconceptions, 8.4% negative misconceptions, 22.1% general misconceptions, while 57.3% showed no conceptual understanding. These findings demonstrate that the instruments effectively identified algebraic misconceptions. Challenges encountered included limited school facilities for mobile device usage and occasional errors in the application when accessed simultaneously by many users, indicating the need for updates. Nevertheless, the Appsheet-assisted three-tier diagnostic test provides a feasible and promising tool for detecting misconceptions in junior high school algebra learning

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the process and responses of junior high school students to mathematical modeling in the context of plane figures, as well as to identify relevant solutions to improve these skills. This is particularly important to examine because, without a proper grasp of modeling, students tend to get stuck merely memorizing procedures without being able to translate real-world problems into mathematical language that leads to solutions. Modeling ability itself is a crucial competency that enables students to solve complex problems through simpler notational and symbolic representations. However, field observations indicate that students’ ability to solve geometric word problems remains weak due to difficulties in understanding problem contexts, performing mathematization, and a lack of understanding of formula procedures. Through a qualitative approach using tests and interviews with three eighth-grade students in Ciwidey, it was found that the first subject (S1) had moderate ability with challenges in the accuracy of illustrations and the interpretation of real-world solutions, while the second (S2) and third (S3) subjects were in the low category because they failed to understand the essence of the problem and were unable to solve the problems correctly. This research provides attention for teachers and researchers in developing students' mathematical modeling abilities, where in general students still experience difficulties in interpreting real-world problems into mathematical models

Abstract

Mathematical critical thinking remains an essential yet underdeveloped competency in 21st-century mathematics learning, particularly when instruction lacks meaningful cultural context. At SMP Pembangunan Piyungan, number-topic instruction predominantly emphasizes procedural over contextual and reflective thinking, signaling an urgent need for culturally-grounded, innovative learning media. This study examines the improvement trend in seventh-grade students' mathematical critical thinking ability through E-Worksheets integrating Ethno-Modeling—connecting mathematical concepts with Piyungan's local cultural context—and the Tri-N approach (Niteni, Nirokke, Nambahi), which systematically guides students through observing, imitating, and developing ideas. Employing a time-series design, data were collected via mathematical critical thinking tests administered at each intervention meeting and analyzed quantitatively by tracking average score trends over time. Results demonstrate a consistent upward trend, with average scores rising from 89.09 at the first meeting to 96.18 at the seventh—indicating that E-Worksheets grounded in local cultural contexts and structured Tri-N learning stages effectively foster students' mathematical critical thinking development. These findings position Ethno-Modeling-based E-Worksheets integrated with Tri-N as a promising alternative medium for meaningful and culturally responsive mathematics learning.

Abstract

Coffee not only plays a role as an economic commodity, but also represents a social phenomenon closely related to calculation and ratio activities. The connection between farmers and mathematical concepts is known as ethnomathematics, which serves to bridge abstract mathematical concepts with the culture and real lives of students. This study aims to explore ethnomathematics comprehensively in the cultivation and processing stages of Tangsi Wangi coffee in Gununghalu Village and to provide a source of contextual mathematics learning. The research method used is a qualitative method with an ethnographic approach through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation of the entire production process. The results of the study show that mathematical concepts are found in six stages, namely planting, harvesting, fermentation, drying, roasting, and brewing. Specifically, the concept of plane geometry is seen in the planting of 2×2 meter squares to optimize the land, while solid geometry is seen in the use of cylindrical drums during fermentation. Arithmetic sequences were identified in the routine harvesting schedule every 10 days. The concepts of comparison and ratio were applied to fertilizer measurements, the ratio of water and coffee powder during brewing, and the calculation of coffee bean weight reduction from 1 kg to 0.8 kg after roasting. Social arithmetic was found in the calculation of yield and determination of package weight. These findings show that local cultural practices are a rich source of mathematics learning and can be used as culture-based teaching materials for more contextual learning while supporting cultural preservation.
