Abstract

The aim of this study were to figure out the dominant category used by teacher and students and the types of verbal interaction used by teacher and students in learning English at grade XI of MAN Serdang Bedagai. The methodology of this study is descriptive qualitative research. The researcher took two classes (XI-IPA2 and XI-IPS2). The researcher used observational tally sheet, matrix, and audio recording as the instruments for collecting the data. The data were analyzed by using Flanders’ Interaction Analysis Category System (FIACS). The data analysis showed that the teacher more dominant in the classroom interaction than the students. The percentage of teacher talk in class XI-IPA2 was 74.03%, in class XI-IPS2 was 65.60%. The dominant category used by teacher in class XI-IPA2 was lecturing by 31.78%, in class XI-IPS2 was also lecturing by 24.73%. The percentage of student talk in class XI-IPA2 was 20.16%, in class XI-IPS2 was 26.88%. And the dominant category of student talk was student talk-response with 15.11% in class XI-IPA2 and 23.65% in class XI-IPS2. All the types of verbal interaction based on Flanders’ Interaction Analysis Category System (FIACS) occurred in the classroom during teaching and learning process at grade XI of MAN Serdang Bedagai.Keywords: Verbal interaction, teacher talk, student talk, Flanders’ Interaction Analysis Category System (FIACS)

Abstract

This was a conducted Research and development (R & D) study which concerned with the using of appropriate teaching and learning media. The objectives of this study were to find out the existing teaching media used in XI grade students of SMA N 11 Medan and to develop Audio-Visual media by using VideoPad for teaching writing Analytical Exposition Text. The data was gathered in the preliminary data by using interview and questionnaire on XI grade students and the English teacher. Then need analysis was done through questionnaire and interview as well. This research described the existing media available in the school and how it is used in English teaching and learning process that a development should be done. According to the result of the need analysis there were only 18% of the students considered that the teaching and learning process was helpful. It also showed information about students‟ choice of method and media to learning writing. By considering the result of the need analysis, an Audio-Visual media then developed as a teaching and learning aid of writing Analytical Exposition text. The product had later been assessed by two experts to find out the eligibility of the media. Through the experts‟ assessment which was contained of 4 scoring criterias, it was known that the eligibility of the media was “Very Good” based on the scoring criteria.  Keywords: Teaching and Learning Writing, Audio-Visual media, Analytical Exposition, VideoPad.

Abstract

The formation of a caring character for the environment can be started from the school environment by maintaining the cleanliness of the school. By getting used to students taking care of the school environment, students will care about the environment around them. The purpose of this study was toanalyze  1) the process of implementing the Clean Saturday program; and 2) the implications of the Clean Saturday program on the caring character of buildings for the environment. This research uses a qualitative approach with a case study method. The research subjects were 20 students of class VI. The research location was at the Santa Lucia Sei Rotan Private Elementary School. Data collection techniques in this study were participant observation, study documentation, and questionnaires. In this study it was found that 1) the process of implementing Clean Saturday, namely routine collaborative activities, was carried out on Saturday at 12:00 WIB cleaning the school environment with an estimated time of 15-30 minutes and accompanied by the teacher; 2) the implications of the Clean Saturday Program in the formation of students' character seen from the questionnaire filled out by respondents, namely students answered Strongly Agree (19,5 %), Agree (48 %), Disagree (23,5%), Strongly Disagree  (9%).The results showed the percentage of 72.5% of students answered correctly and 27.5% of students answered incorrectly. This data shows that there is an implication of the Clean Saturday program carried out by the Santa Lusia Sei Rotan Private Elementary School for the development of environmental care characters. Therefore, the Clean Saturday program can be used as an alternative for the formation of students' environmental care characters.

Abstract

The teacher's limited knowledge of 21st century learning skills is an obstacle to implementation in the classroom. In the educational context, technological developments should have had a positive impact on the learning process as well as from the perspective of teacher competency development. Less than ideal conditions occur in school, where the competence of the teachers is still weak. Teaching is still conventional and teacher-centered. The solution to overcome this problem is to attend training organized by the foundation. The research method used is descriptive quantitative. The subjects in this study were Santa Lucia Kindergarten Teachers. Data analysis used in this research is data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion. The results of this study cannot be disclosed because the research has not been completed. This research is in the nature of product development for the benefit of the competence of all teachers in the Santa Lucia Kindergarten Unit. The results of the education and training that have been carried out have not been carried out in full, its implementation is still in progress. The author concludes that teachers in today's 21st century educational development have more severe challenges and their tasks are more complex. The role of the teacher is very important in managing the learning process, to face these challenges, therefore teachers must have the ability to think critically, social responsibility, the ability to build networks, time discipline and rules as well as skills, skills in the 21st century.

Abstract

This study was about teacher’s initiation in English classroom interaction based on Sinclair and Coulthard Model. The aimed of this study were (a) to find out the types of teacher’s initiations used in English classroom interaction based on Sinclair and Coulthard Model, (b) to find out the dominant type of teacher’s initiation used in English classroom Interaction based on Sinclair and Coulthard Model, and  (c) to find out the reason why the  teacher used the dominant type of  initiation during the teaching and learning process. This research used  qualitative research. To answer the problems of the study, the data were collected in three ways by observing, recording and interviewing. The data were analyzed based on Sinclair and Coulthard  theory (1975). The result of this study were the following, (a) There were nine types of  teacher’s initiations found during the teaching and learning process,  namely, teacher elicit, teacher inform, teacher direct, listing, re-initiation (i), re- initiation (ii), check, repeat, and boundary. (b) the dominant type of teacher’s initiation used in English classroom interaction was teacher elicit, which was 40%. (c) the reasons why the teacher used the dominant type of initiation during the teaching and learning process was categorized based on the variables that were affected on teaching and learning process (Gage,2004), they were: the teacher believed that by initiating elicit, it could create an effective classroom interaction, the teacher believed that by initiating elicit, it could push the students on process of flashback, the teacher believed that by initiating elicit, the students would be encouraged to become more confident and braver to participate actively during the teaching and learning process.Key words: Teacher’s Initiation, Classroom Interaction, Sinclair and Coulthard.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to supplement the reading comprehensionquestions by analysing the weakness regarding the levels and types of questions inthe textbook Contextual English for Grade X of Senior High Schools and todevelop a reading comprehension workbook for grade X based on Curriculum2013 and Barrett’s Taxonomy. It was found that this textbook contained too muchliteral question which was at 61.6% and only low number of high level questions(10.86%). From the preliminary finding, this workbook was then developed with210 questions and validated by teacher, lecturer, and also the students’ try out.The result of validation showed that the product was excellent. The average scorefor each aspect by the first validator was 87.36% (good) and then revise until thescore given by the second validator was 91.57% (excellent). The result ofstudents’ try out showed that the value of 0.4 on each exercises on the bookand was considered valid. From these result, it was concluded that by the designand content, the product is appropriate to be used for public.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to develop writing materials of descriptive text assupporting learning for grade X multimedia students at SMKN 1 Dolok Masihul. Theresearch was conducted by using Research and Development which is adapted fromBorg, Gall and Gall (2003). The data was taken from the observation, questionnaires,and interview. The materials were validated by an English lecture and an Englishteacher by using validation sheets which is adapted from BSNP. The data werecollected by using descriptive analysis. The result of this study shows that: (1) theexisting materials do not support the students study program because the topics of thematerials are still general, (2) relevant writing materials are needed by students invocational school especially in multimedia study program. The materials are designedby using Scientific Approach, (3) the developed writing materials by using ScientificApproach has been validated with the score 3.60 from the first expert and 3.53 fromthe second expert which is in the range of 3.50 < ̅≤ 4.00. The writing descriptivetext materials have been developed in accordance to the students’ need by usingScientific Approach.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe how teachers at SMP Negeri 37 Medan feel about using the E-learning platform by using Google Classroom Apps. The study was carried out with the use of descriptive qualitative analysis. It was conducted at SMP Negeri 37 Medan. The information was acquired through a Google form questionnaire and interviews. According to the findings of the study, the first and second teachers believe that Google Classroom teachers cannot fully assist teachers in the teachinglearning process in the virtual classroom. Teachers favor on-line instruction. Teaching online with Google Classroom necessitates additional effort, such as internet access and time extensions. It is also believed that teachers have difficulty disciplining students during the teaching learning process. The findings of the study show that two teachers’ perceptions of teachers on the use E- learning platform by using Google Classroom Apps during the learning process in Covid 19 are positive, and that using Google Classroom has forced teachers to be more creative in their teaching learning process.

Abstract

This study was conducted to find out the teacher’s strategies in teaching writing recount text and describe how the strategies applied in teaching writing recount text at SMA Negeri 1 Tebing Tinggi. It used qualitative research design. The subject of this research was one of the English teacher in SMA Negeri 1 Tebing Tinggi. The data of this research were the teacher’s strategies and the activities in teaching writing recount text. The results showed that the teacher applied four strategies from seven strategies by Haynes and Zacarian, they were (1) making lesson visual, (2) modifying vocabulary instruction, (3) using cooperative learning strategy and (4) determining key concepts. Those are the ways how teacher applying the strategies: First, in observing he applied lesson visual strategy. The second, in questioning he modified vocabulary instruction. Third, in experimenting he applied cooperative learning strategy. Finally, he applied determining key concept strategy in associating and communicating stages.Key words: Teaching Writing, Teacher’s Strategies, Recount Text, Qualitative Research.

Abstract

The aims of this study were to investigate teacher’s strategies in teaching writing recount text at SMP GAJAH MADA MEDAN and to discover the reasons on why teacher implemented that teaching strategies the way he did in an online class. The method of this research was qualitative research. The technique of data collection in this research were observation and interview. The research finding showed that the teacher applied two strategies in teahing writing namely Shared Writing Strategy and Guided Wring Strategy. According to the teacher, the reasons for using Shared Writing Strategy and Guided Writing Strategy are these strategies are suitable and effective to overcome students difficulties in writing especially in an online class that more complicated than face to face learning. Both of these strategies also made the students easily to understand the lesson and become more independent to write their own recount text.
