Abstract

Betel (Piper betle L.) is a plant that has long been used as a traditional medicine due to its nutritious chemical components in it. These components can be analyzed using the FTIR (Fourier Transform Infra-Red) spectroscopy method which can describe the chemical structure based on the fingerprint spectrum. The purpose of this study was to analyze the fingerprints of betel nut originating from Manado, North Minahasa, Minahasa, and Bitung using the FTIR spectroscopic method. Betel fruit samples were measured in the mid-IR region (4000-650 Cm-1) and obtained 4 FTIR spectra which were relatively the same, then the functional groups were determined for each main peak. The results showed that there were 10 functional groups in 17 absorbance bands for each betel fruit spectrum obtained. Fingerprint analysis of betel fruit with FTIR spectroscopic method can provide an overview of the chemical structure contained in 4 types of betel fruit based on geographically different growing areas.

Abstract

Uncovering the therapeutic potential of secondary metabolites produced by plants, animals, and microbes constitutes the foundation for the development of novel medications. The objective of this investigation is to discern the classes of secondary metabolites and assess the antibacterial properties of endophytic fungal extracts obtained from Chrysanthemum indicum L. flowers. Through the isolation process, five isolates designated as JEC1, JEC2, JEC3, JEC4, and JEC5 were identified. The cultivation of endophytic fungal isolates spanned a three-week period before undergoing extraction with ethyl acetate. The phytochemical tests revealed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, steroids, terpenoids, saponins, and tannins in the ethyl acetate extract. Antibacterial activity was determined using the agar well diffusion method, with ciprofloxacin serving as a positive control. Notably, all ethyl acetate extracts from endophytic fungi exhibited antibacterial activity. The most substantial inhibitory diameter against Staphylococcus aureus was recorded as 19.1±0.8 mm for the JEC3 endophytic fungi, while Escherichia coli exhibited an inhibitory diameter of 16±1.1 mm for the JEC2 endophytic fungi.

Abstract

ABSTRACT The gelling agent component is a critical factor that can affect gel’s physical characteristics, such as organoleptic properties, homogeneity, pH, adhesion, and viscosity. Starch is widely use as a filler and binder. The aim of the research was to analyze the effect of the formulation of salicylic acid gel using sago starch as a gelling agent on the physical characteristics of the gel. The research began with the extraction of sago starch, and gel formulations were prepared using starch as the gelling agent with variations in sago starch with F1 (6%), F2 (8%), and F3 (10%). The gels were evaluated for their physical properties, including organoleptic, homogeneity, pH, adhesion, and spreadability testing over a period of 12 weeks at a temperature of 28ºC±2ºC. The research showed that all gel formulations did not undergo changes in organoleptic and homogeneity. In the pH test, all preparations met the requirements. The spreadability test results indicated that all gels did not meet the requirements, while only gel F1 did not meet the adhesion test requirements.
