Abstract

Education is an effort to educate the nation's life and also to improve the quality of human life through a learning process for students to understand, understand and be more critical in thinking, including learning English. For this reason, the role and position of the teacher is very strategic in national development, especially in the field education. During the Covid-19 pandemic, online learning demanded teacher creativity in designing and implementing education, which was needed so that online learning could run well. The purpose of this study is to find out how creative teachers are in learning English during the Covid-19 pandemic. Data were obtained from 2 English teachers at Pelita Bangsa Catholic Middle School. The instrument questions in the interview were prepared with reference to the 5 main topics of the creative teacher category according to Abedini & Broujeni (2016), namely lesson presentation, class management/management, assignments, teacher-student interaction, and teacher character. The creativity of teachers in learning English at SMP Katolik Pelita Bangsaduring the Covid-19 pandemic was carried out online, both non-interactive online and interactive online. During non-interactive learning through learning videos. The teacher makes learning videos according to the predetermined lesson plans and then uploads them on his YouTube channel. Presentation of learning material using videos made with their own creations which after being uploaded to YouTube then the video link is sent to students. The video already contains material explanations and examples as well as exercises and assignments that students must do. During non-interactive learning through Youtube, e-learning, and Google Classroom, then during interactive learning through Zoom meetings. Everything went well because it was supported by the character of the teacher who was disciplined, punctual, creative and always motivated his students.

Abstract

The objective of this research were to find out 1). the level of grammatical and mechanic accuracy in the opinion essays by the third semester students. 2). the difference in the level of grammatical and mechanics accuracy between peer-correction and self-correction technique in writing opinion essay by the third semester students of UKI Toraja. This research is a quantitative research. The population of this research is the third semester students of English study program which consists of 3 classes. To select the sample, the writer uses a cluster sampling technique by selecting two classes. The instrument used to collect data is a written test. The results of the research shows that there were differences in the results of the implementation between the peer-correction technique and the peer-correction technique. The average score of students from the implementation of peer-correction is 76.5 and it is classified into the good category while the score of the self-correction implementation is 57.7 and it is classified into poor category. Therefore, it can be concluded that the peer-corection implementation is better than the selft-corection implementation.

Abstract

Kegiatan PKM ini dilaksanakan di Jemaat Kanuruan, Lembang Nonogan, Toraja Utara. Jumlah peserta yang mengikuti kegiatan ini  yaitu 31 orang. Kegiatan ini dilakukan 3 kali dalam seminggu selama 2 bulan. Kegiatan PKM ini disambut baik oleh warga jemaat dan sangat mendukung kegiatan ini. Jemaat  juga ikut memfasilitasi kegiatan ini dengan menyiapkan tempat kegiatan  dan Mendorong anak sekolah minggu untuk mengikuti kegiatan ini. Adapun proses pembelajaran menggunakan game offline berbasis aplikasi android.  Adapun hasil kegiatan ini yaitu meningkatnya motivasi peserta untuk belajar bahasa inggris, meningkatnya kemampuan berbahasa bahasa inggris seiring dengan meningkatnya kosakata mereka setelah mengikuti pelatihan. Ada perbedaan nilai rata-rata yang cukup jauh sebelum dan sesudah mengikuti latihan dari lima aspek yang dinilai. Nilai kosakata meningkat dari nilai rata sebelum pelatihan yaitu 30 meningkat menjadi 83,3 setalah mengikuti pelatihan, Speaking juga mengalami peningkatan dari 36,6 menjadi 86,6, kemudian nilai grammar dari 23,3 meningkat menjadi 80,  sementara nilai reading 30 meningkat menjadi 80.  Abstract. This PKM activity was held at the Kanuruan Congregation, Lembang Nonogan, North Toraja. The number of participants who took part in this activity were 31 people. This activity was carried out 3 times a week for 2 months. This PKM activity was welcomed by the congregation members and very supportive of this activity. The congregation also facilitated this activity by preparing the activity site and encouraging Sunday school children to take part in this activity. The learning process uses offline games based on Android applications. The results of this activity are increasing the motivation of participants to learn English, increasing their ability to speak English along with increasing their vocabulary after attending the training. There is a significant difference in the average score before and after taking part in the five aspects assessed. Vocabulary scores increased from the average score before the training, which was 30, increased to 83.3 after attending the training. Speaking also increased from 36.6 to 86.6, then grammar scores increased from 23.3 to 80, while reading scores increased from 30 to 80

Abstract

The problem statement of this research is “how is the sixth-semester students’ English vocabulary size at English education study program of FKIP UKI Toraja”. The objective of this research is to know the sixth-semester students’ English vocabulary size at English education study program of FKIP UKI Toraja. The method used in this research namely the quantitative method. There were 30 students’ of the sixth semester students’ at English education study program of FKIP UKI Toraja which is taken randomly as the participants of this research. The students’ vocabulary size was measured using with Nation VST formula. It is found that the sixth-semester students’ English vocabulary size at English education study program of FKIP UKI Toraja at level 2.000-word level with 10 students’ who passed this level. Only 3 students’ passed the next level 3.000. At level 5.000, only 1 student’ passed. At the university level, only 1 student’ passed this level. No student’ can reach this level 10.000 since it comprises technical terms from different fields of study, and nouns that we rarely meet in our language use. In summary, the sixth-semester students’ English vocabulary at English education study program of FKIP UKI Toraja is still at the high-frequency level, with a vocabulary size of 2,000-word. As a result, individuals are still classified as having a low vocabulary and must enhance their vocabulary by studying the vocabulary of simplified reading books.

Abstract

This research aims to find out what types of Toraja local wisdom topics are needed by elementary school students in North Toraja in local content English language teaching materials. This research was conducted in four North Toraja elementary schools, namely SDN 6 Rantepao , SDN 2 Tikala, SDN 7 Tikala and SDN 7 Sesean. The samples from this study were all fourth graders and English teachers who were selected using a total sampling technique. It consisted of 67 students and there were 4 English teachers. The instrument for this research is a questionnaire. The results of this research show that there are 1o local wisdoms topic that need to be included in English teaching materials as Public Speaking subjects, namely: Tourism object, Thanks giving, Funeral ceremony, traditional food, Traditional drink, clothing, social Values, Folklore, arts, Fairytale.

Abstract

This study is quantitative research. The purpose of this study is to determine the effectiveness of using Android smartphone-based mobile applications to learn English grammar. The population of this study was the first-year students in the English language education study program. To determine the research sample, the writers used the cluster sampling technique. The sample for this research was 20 students. The results of this study, after analyzing the obtained data, show that the Android smartphone-based mobile apps application is effectively used in learning English grammar. The study revealed that the post-test was higher than the pre-test, with the post-test scoring 87.04 and the pre-test scoring 42.65. The significance results also indicate that the t-test is greater than the T-table score, with t-test = 11.350 and t-table = 2.093, respectively.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to find out the cultural values were implemented by teachers in learning English. This study implemented descriptive qualitative study. Data were collected through observation, recording, and interviews with four English teachers. The subjects of this study were chosen by using purposive sampling. And using Miles and Huberman's theory to analyze the data. The results of the study show that there were several Toraja cultural values in learning English activity, namely: a) the values of kapatonganan (religiousness), b) the values of kasiuluran (Family), c) the values of tengko situru’ (togetherness), c)  the values of kabassaran (work hard), d) the values of longko'/siri' (tolerance/shame/authority), e) the value of ma'parapa' (love peace), f) the value of sikamali' (affection), g) the value of siangkaran (help), h) the value of mabalele (friendly/communicative), i) the value of umpangke' tomendadianna (respect for parents). Based on the results above, the writer  concluded that in learning English process at SMK 1 Toraja Utara, the teacher presented the English material by incorporating cultural values of Toraja.

Abstract

This article examines the evaluation of translation errors made by using online translation applications. Online translation applications are increasingly important for cross-language communication, but their quality often contains errors and defects. The research uses qualitative methods with a descriptive analysis approach, focusing on sixth-semester English students at the Indonesian Christian University of Toraja. The study consists of 10 Indonesian sentences translated into English using an online translation application. The results of semantic analysis show significant translation errors, including context-related errors, loss of nuance, and word choice errors. Inconsistencies in translation between sentences are also observed. The article emphasizes the importance of human skills in translation and double-checking translation results. It emphasizes the need for a deeper understanding of context and nuance. While online translation apps can be useful tools, careful and critical evaluation is still essential to ensure optimal quality in cross-language communication.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to find out the level of interest of students in learning English in the implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum at SDN 8 Makale This study is descriptive quantitative methods. The sample of this resear was the fifth grade students of SDN 8 Makale. The researcher used cluster sampling technique to chose the sample of this research. The ressearcher chose class 1.A as sample of this research, and it consist of 23 students.The instruments used for data collection were observation and questionnaire. Based the result of data analysis shows that fifth grade students of SDN 8 Makale have an interest in learning English. This can be seen from the data obtained from statements 1-20 which showed that from the results of the average student answer score is 81% and it fall into high criteria. Based on the result of data analysis, researcher concludes that seventh grade students of SDN 8 Makale have a high interest in learning English.

Abstract

Kegiatan ini dilaksanakn dilembang Marante selama 6 bulan mulai dari bulan juni –November 2022. Kegiatan ini diikuti oleh 40 peserta yang dibagi kedalam dua kelompok. Pelaksanaan kegiatan dilaksanakn di dua tempat yaitu di kantor lembang Marante dan di rumah kepala dusun Marante pada sore hari. Kegiatan ini dilaksanakan 3 kali dalam seminggu yaitu pada hari senin, rabu dan sabtu. Dari hasil Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat (PKM) telah berjalan dengan baik dan memberikan hasil yang positif. Dari hasil yang ditemukan setalah melakukan bimbingan belajar menunjukkan bahwa ternyata pengajaran kosa kata bahasa Inggris menggunakan Games memberikan dampak yang positif. Hal ini dapat dilihat darai hasil pre-test dan post test. Hasil post-test lebih besar dibandingkan dengan pre-test. Juga dengan hasil wawancara dengan peserta menunjukkan bahaw pembelajaran menggunakan game membuat mereka termotivasi dan bersemagat belajar bahasa inggris. Selain itu, mereka juga merasa tidak tegang dan cenderung lebih santai dalam mengikuti pembelajaran. Kegiatan ini juga disambut positif oleh s masyarakat lembang Marante.
