Abstract

This research aims to investigate the effectiveness of the Listen English Daily Practice application to improve the listening skills of tenth-grade students at SMK Negeri 8 Palu. The study used a quasi-experimental design by Cohen et al. (2005:214) with pre-test and post-test given to both the experimental and control classes. Class X Mining Geology A was assigned as the experimental group and class X Mining Geology B as the control class, each consists of 25 students. Data were analyzed using SPSS. The results showed that students in the experimental class achieved a significantly higher post-test score compared to the control group, with a mean increase from 56.64 to 79.12. This indicates that the use of the Listen English Daily Practice application is considered an effective medium to improve students’ listening skills. The application’s features, such as vocabulary lists, audio transcripts, and interactive tests, contributed to increased motivation and independent learning.

Abstract

The primary objective of this research was to investigate the effectiveness of the shadowing technique in improving the listening skills of eleventh-grade students at MAN 2 Parigi. Using a quasi-experimental design, the study compared two groups: an experimental group that received listening instruction through shadowing and a control group that received conventional instruction. Assessment tools consisted of pre- and post-tests with multiple-choice and fill-in-the-blank items designed to evaluate micro and macro listening skills. The findings revealed substantial improvement in the listening performance of the experimental group after the intervention. Their mean score increased significantly from 43.33 on the pretest to 84.17 on the posttest. In contrast, the control group showed only a marginal increase, from 27.59 to 39.66. Statistical analysis using the Mann-Whitney U test revealed a significance value of 0.000, confirming a statistically significant difference between the two groups. Based on this result, the null hypothesis was rejected in favor of the alternative hypothesis. Therefore, it can be concluded that the shadowing technique significantly improves the listening skills of eleventh-grade students at MAN 2 Parigi.

Abstract

Many (EFL) frequently encounter difficulties in developing their speaking abilities, frequently because of restricted chances for practice and the lack of of interactive activities in the classroom. This research aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the Dixit board game in enhancing the speaking abilities of eleventh-grade students at SMA Negeri 9 Palu through a quasi-experimental design. The study included two groups: class XI MIA 2, which acted as the experimental group, and class XI MIA 1, which served as the control group, both selected through purposive sampling. A speaking test was employed as the research instrument, focusing on three main criteria: fluency, accuracy, and comprehensibility. Both groups underwent a pre-test and a post-test, with the experimental group participating in six treatment sessions using the Dixit board game. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS version 25. The results indicated that the average score of the experimental group increased from 54.46 to 76.46, while the control group’s score rose from 49.10 to 59.20. The Shapiro-Wilk test confirmed normal distribution of the data, and Levene’s Test indicated equal variances (p = 0.610 > 0.05). A paired sample t-test demonstrated a significant improvement in the experimental group (p = 0.000 < 0.05), and an independent sample t-test revealed a significant difference in post-test scores between the two groups (p = 0.000 < 0.05). These findings suggest that utilizing the Dixit board game significantly enhances students’ speaking skills and supports its use as an interactive and student-centered tool in EFL speaking instruction.

Abstract

This research examines the impact of the Small Group Discussion (SGD) technique on improving the speaking skills of the eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Sigi, with particular emphasis on vocabulary, pronunciation, and fluency. Employing a quasi-experimental design, the study compared an experimental group taught using SGD with a control group receiving conventional instruction. Both groups completed pre-tests and post-tests to assess their progress. The data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test, Mann-Whitney U Test, and descriptive statistics. Results showed that the experimental group experienced a significant improvement in all targeted speaking sub-skills, with average scores increasing from 15.14 to 21.14, while the control group showed only a slight improvement from 15.49 to 16.07. Statistical analysis confirmed a highly significant difference (p 0.05) between the two groups, demonstrating the greater effectiveness of SGD compared to the conventional method in enhancing speaking skills. The study concludes that SGD fosters active engagement and self-confidence, providing a positive and supportive environment for language learning. These findings offer practical insights for English language teaching, endorsing SGD as an effective strategy to boost students' communicative competence.

Data were collected through undergraduate thesis, thesis, and journal articles published in 2014 to 2023. The data were analyzed using content analysis based on Harmer (2007). There are ten scientific writings from Susilo (2014), Hidayanti (2015), Sholikah (2017), Agustiningrum (2019), Sholiha (2020), Tumada et al. (2020), Marwa (2020), Arifin (2021), Farisya (2022), and Magfirah (2022). Some researchers refer to expert recommendations using role play by Harmer (2007), Lewin (1990), and Kemmis and Mc Taggart (1988) procedure. The results of the study show that the implementation of role play is effective in improving students speaking skills because students take a new identity and learn to use a foreign language students for every day interaction. Besides that, role play technique is ineffective in teaching speaking skills because of some factors for some students and teacher. Students and teachers using the role play technique to develop and teach speaking skills should prioritize preparation, participation, and reflection. To get the most out of the learning experience, students should actively participate in the scenarios, taking on their roles with excitement and originality. They should also be receptive to comments and willing to practice frequently in order to enhance their fluency and confidence. Teachers should carefully select or create role play scenarios that are both relevant and demanding, with clear directions and enough support.
