Abstract

This study aims to investigate the intention to donate cash waqf among Indonesian Muslim youth. Additionally, this study explains the theory of planned behavior (TPB) and two additional variables, i.e., Islamic religiosity and willingness. The Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) method was employed to evaluate the measurement and structural models. Online questionnaires were then distributed to purposively selected respondents throughout Indonesia, consisting of all major islands. In total, 104 respondents participated. This study uncovered that the attitude and willingness variables affected the intention to donate cash waqf among Indonesian Muslim youth. Meanwhile, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, and Islamic religiosity variables were not significantly proven as the determinants. With the latest data and variables studied, these findings can be used as guidelines for policymakers, especially waqf regulators and waqf institutions, to innovate and improve the characteristics of cash waqf contributors, primarily among Muslim youth, to maintain the waqf instruments’ sustainability and development.

Abstract

Amid the economic crises triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic, sustainable financial systems have become essential for resilience and recovery, particularly in ASEAN countries where Islamic banks play a crucial role in economic stability. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the performances of the Islamic Bank in the ASEAN countries in terms of both efficiency and productivity. This study provides insights into 33 Islamic banks in Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam, Thailand, and the Philippines from 2015 to 2022. This study employs the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) technique and the Malmquist Productivity Index (MPI) to simultaneously attain elevated levels of efficiency and productivity. The result shows that Maybank Islamic Berhad was considered the most efficient and productive Islamic Bank within ASEAN countries. In terms of significant elements, it was discovered that shifts in technology capabilities have a greater magnitude of effect on Islamic banking productivity in ASEAN than shifts in innovation strategies and operational efficiencies. The findings also show that Islamic banks in ASEAN region experienced a growth in banking performance during the research period. This implies that the Islamic banking sector demonstrated enhanced performance despite the adverse effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. This study suggests that all ASEAN Islamic banks must continue to enhance the quality of their technology in order to raise their efficiency and generate more productivity in the future.

Abstract

Over the past few decades, countries in the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) have achieved various levels of economic development. In today's sustainable era, increasing efficiency and productivity is one of the goals to be achieved. Development goals, especially the achievement of food security, healthy lives and well-being for all ages, gender equality, inclusive economic growth, and industrialization are important to ensure access to sustainable livelihoods. This study aims to assess changes in total factor productivity and efficiency based on n indicators of sustainable development goals (SDGs) in 49 countries that are members of the OIC during the period 2010 to 2017. Utilizing the Malmquist total factor productivity (TFP) index and Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), this study estimates the changes in productivity and efficiency that occurred in each OIC member country. The results show that Jordan, Cameroon, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia, and Lebanon are the countries with the highest TFP increase in the observed years. However, the overall productivity of OIC countries has decreased as evidenced by the Malmquist TFP index which is less than one or 0.991. This productivity decline is caused by technical and technological inefficiencies. On the other hand, there are differences in productivity in countries belonging to the GCC, AMU, Sub-Saharan Africa, Middle East countries, and Asian countries. The performance comparison is intended to help identify policies for further improvement for OIC countries in the region.

Abstract

Waqf is an Islamic concept that refers to a charitable endowment or trust. It involves dedicating a specific asset, such as property, land, or money, for the benefit of the community or a specific purpose, in accordance with Islamic law. One of the important aspect in the success of waqf is the management and optimization concept. This research will try to elaborate further on the development of waqf in the non-Muslim country of Singapore. This paper also tries to look at the revitalization of existing waqf land in Singapore, given its very limited area. The result show that, although it is Muslim-minority country, Singapore is able to professionally manage its waqf assets and properties productively. Through MUIS, waqf is managed optimally. The impressive performance of Warees, an important philanthropic institution in Singapore, cannot be separated from its professionalism, innovation in financing, initiation of cash waqf and the release of fatwa on istibdal waqf.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to examine the efficiency, performance, and scope for enhancement of Rural Banks (BPRs) and Sharia Rural Banks (BPRSs) in Indonesia, particularly in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic, in order to support national economic recovery. The research sample consisted of 77 BPRs and 52 BPRSs in Indonesia over the period of 2016-2020. The analytical approach employed was a non-parametric method called Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), utilizing secondary data obtained from financial bank statements. The input variables encompassed fixed assets, operational costs, and third-party funds, while the output variables included the amount of financing provided and operating income. The findings of the study reveal a fluctuating trend in the performance of BPRs and BPRSs in Indonesia from year to year. According to the CRS and VRS scores, the efficiency level of BPRs remained stable during the Covid-19 pandemic, whereas BPRSs experienced a decline in efficiency. Consequently, this study concludes that BPRs exhibit superior efficiency compared to BPRSs in Indonesia. Moreover, the analysis of potential improvements indicates that the most significant source of inefficiency lies within the output variables: financing and operating income. Furthermore, benchmarking analysis reveals that the efficiency of both BPRs and BPRSs was higher during the periodof 2016–2019 compared to 2020.

Abstract

Despite of market condition under perfect or unperfect competition, Islamic banking has to reach their level of efficiency in order to succeed and make a profit; those who do not will fail and be forced to exit the market. However apart of having a sound performance, Islamic banking also has to comply with the sharia principles. This paper aims to have efficiency and maslahah measurement in one assessment framework that is maslahah-efficiency quadrant (MEQ). The study from 2011-2014 revealed that Bank Muamalat Indonesia (BMI) and Sharia Panin Bank are excellent since both are within the first quadrant. Whereas Bank Sharia Mandiri (BSM), Sharia Maybank, and Sharia Bukopin Bank are considered good at the second quadrant; Bank Rakyak Indonesia Sharia (BRI) and BCA Sharia are fair at the third; and Bank Mega Sharia, Victoria Sharia, Bank Negara Indonesia Sharia (BNI), and Bank Jabar Banten Sharia (BJB) are poor at the fourth sequentially. It is urge for Islamic bank that are in low level of MSI to have a critical policy to keep in line with the five factor of maqashid sharia apart of having efficiency in order to reach maslahah.

Abstract

This study applies Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) to measure the efficiency level of 24 Islamic banks in four ASEAN countries (Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam and Thailand) over the 2010-2019 period. Specifically, this study uses the Banker, Charnes and Cooper (BCC) model as a basic approach in DEA with variable return to scale assumption. The Malmquist index was also employed to explain whether the changes in Islamic banks’ efficiency and productivity is affected by the efficiency changes or technological changes. According to the Malmquist index scores on total factor productivity (TFP) change, 17 of the 24 Islamic banks (or 70.8 percent) achieved an improvement in productivity over the research period, with Thailand recording the highest productivity level increase. Overall, the most productive Islamic bank was Affin Islamic Bank Berhad. Finally, it was observed that there was a productivity growth in the last two years of the period, namely 2017-2018 and 2018-2019. The productivity change was driven more by efficiency than by technology, implying that Islamic banks in ASEAN countries must improve the technological aspect.
