Abstract

The study purpose was to uncover the semiotic meanings of traditional carvings in Nias traditional houses (Omo Hada) in Orahili Sibohou Village, Gomo, and to compare the visual and social characteristics between noble houses (Balugu/Si’ulu) and commoner houses (Banua Sato). Materials and methods. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method with a semiotic approach. Primary data were gathered through direct observation of a 500-year-old traditional house and in-depth interviews with the customary leader and heir of the Balugu house, Mr. Tandröziduhu Telaumbanua. The study is further supported by a literature review of Nias language and literature, comparative statements from residents of Tumöri Village, and curatorial perspectives from the Museum Pusaka Nias. Results. The results indicate that carvings on Balugu houses serve as representations of power, social status, and historical achievements through traditional feasts (Owasa). Semiotically, the use of high-quality Siholi wood and exclusive motifs signifies a rigid class hierarchy. In contrast, commoner houses possess limited carvings due to financial constraints and customary regulations. Although motifs such as Ni’olasara can theoretically be placed in various types of houses, the practice in Orahili Sibohou demonstrates that the complexity and placement of carvings remain the primary markers of social status. Conclusions. The study concludes that carvings and megalithic objects in Gomo are vital artifacts documenting the Fondrako (customary law system) and Nias cultural identity. These carvings function not merely as decoration, but as a visual language that maintains social structure and historical continuity despite ongoing social shifts in the community.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effect of using a memory game as a teaching medium on the reading comprehension skills of eighth-grade students at UPTD SMP Negeri 3 Mandrehe. A quasi-experimental, nonequivalent pretest-posttest design was implemented with 60 purposively selected students, who were divided into two groups: a control group and an experimental group. The control group received conventional teaching methods, while the experimental group was taught using a memory game from the Interacty platform. Data were collected through multiple-choice reading comprehension tests administered before and after the treatment. The results were analyzed using paired and independent sample t-tests as well as N-Gain calculations to measure the improvement in reading comprehension skills. The analysis revealed that the experimental group showed a significantly higher improvement in reading comprehension, with an N-Gain score of 0.792 (high) compared to the control group’s 0.244 (low). The findings indicate that memory games effectively enhance vocabulary retention, increase student motivation, improve focus, and create an engaging classroom atmosphere. By incorporating memory games, students became more actively involved in learning, which contributed to improved reading comprehension skills. The study concludes that memory games are a valuable tool for improving reading comprehension and fostering an enjoyable and meaningful learning experience. Therefore, it is recommended that memory games be integrated into junior high school English instruction as an innovative teaching strategy to enhance students’ reading skills. The research highlights the potential of interactive and engaging methods in facilitating language learning, thus suggesting that educators should consider adopting such approaches to improve educational outcomes in reading comprehension.

Abstract

This study explores the role of cooperative learning methods, particularly the Learning Together model, in shaping student character at UPTD SMP Negeri 2 Gunungsitoli. The research employed a qualitative approach, collecting data through classroom observation of 22 eighth-grade students and interviews with an English teacher. The focus was on how cooperative learning fosters essential values such as responsibility, tolerance, collaboration, and effective communication, which are closely aligned with the dimensions of the Pancasila Student Profile. Findings reveal that the Learning Together model effectively enhances students’ social interactions, mutual respect, and willingness to participate actively in group discussions. It also promotes a sense of accountability by encouraging students to contribute ideas, support one another, and take shared responsibility for group outcomes. Beyond academic improvement, the model cultivates positive character traits that are necessary for holistic student development. Nevertheless, several challenges emerged during implementation. Some students displayed low self-confidence, while others struggled due to limited learning time and restricted access to teaching materials or supplementary resources. These barriers highlight the need for improved classroom support, extended learning opportunities, and diversified materials to optimize the effectiveness of cooperative learning. Overall, this research demonstrates that cooperative learning, when applied to English lessons, not only strengthens language skills but also nurtures character values essential for preparing students to meet future challenges. The study offers practical implications for educators, suggesting that balanced teaching strategies integrating academic competence with character development are vital within the Merdeka Curriculum framework. By addressing both cognitive and affective dimensions, teachers can create meaningful learning experiences that encourage students to grow as capable, responsible, and socially aware individuals.

Abstract

Vocabulary mastery is a skill that refers to a high level of proficiency in processing words in a language. The students at the tenth grade of SMK Negeri 1 Gunungsitoli lacked vocabulary mastery, so they found it difficulty to understand texts properly and did not achieve the minimum competency criteria (MMC) that has been set at school. The purpose of this study was to improve the students' ability to vocabulary mastery. In improving students' vocabulary mastery, the researcher used Word Cloud and applied it in Classroom Action Research (CAR). This research was conducted in Cycle II, there were four steps in conducting research, namely: planning, action, observation and reflection. . In Cycle I, there was no student who was classified in "very good level", there were two students (5.72%) in "good level". Instead of that, there were 19 students (54.28%) in "fair level", 14 students (40%) in "poor level". In addition, the average of the students' mark was 53.00. The results show that many students were at enough and less levels so it really needed to be improved in the next cycle. In Cycle II, there was 1 student (2.86 ) in “poor level”, there were 7 students (20%) in “fair level”, there were 6 students (17.14%) in “good level”, and 22 students ( 62.86 % ) in “very good level”. In addition, the average of the students' mark was 86.42. The students' average mark was higher than the MMC that was 75. Based on the explanation above, it is concluded that the Word Cloud can improve the students' vocabulary mastery at the tenth grade of SMK Negeri 1 Gunungsitoli in 2022/2023. Abstract

This study aims to analyze how the rhetorical elements of credibility, emotion, and logic are realized in tourism promotion vlogs and how their integration contributes to persuasive effectiveness in recreational tourism promotion. The research employed a qualitative approach with design focusing on tourism promotion vlogs about Kamadu Beach. The participants consisted of 24 respondents who had no prior familiarity with the destination. Data were collected through the selection of tourism vlogs from digital platforms and interviews guided by a questionnaire to capture respondents’ perceptions. The data were analyzed using a rhetorical triangle framework by examining narrative and visual elements to identify persuasive strategies. The results show that emotional appeal is the most dominant element in tourism promotion vlogs and plays a significant role in attracting audience attention and increasing engagement. However, logical information supports rational decision-making, while credibility strengthens audience trust in the content. The study concludes that effective tourism promotion vlogs require a balanced integration of emotional appeal, logical information, and credible presentation to enhance persuasive impact and encourage actual tourist visits. The findings imply that content creators and tourism promoters should strategically combine these rhetorical elements to achieve more effective digital tourism promotion.

Abstract

Learners of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) are often exposed to pronunciation variances that could affect their perception and comprehension of spoken English. Variations in pronunciation, particularly in words that sound similar, frequently cause perceptual ambiguity and misunderstandings when listening. The purpose of this study is to investigate how learners perceive and adjust to various pronunciation forms, as well as how pronunciation differences affect students' perceptions of speech. This study employed a descriptive-interpretive approach within a psycholinguistic framework. The participants were English Education Study Program undergraduates who had previously studied the language. A hearing exercise with words with different pronunciations and a perceptual questionnaire intended to elicit students' experiences, opinions, and cognitive methods in processing spoken input were used to gather data. The results show that initial confusion and hesitancy in word recognition were driven by pronunciation variances, especially when there was little contextual assistance. But with repeated exposure, students showed that they could modify their perspective by referencing past hearing experiences. These findings imply that speech perception is a cognitive process that is both dynamic and experience-based. The study comes to the conclusion that including pronunciation differences into listening teaching will improve students' comprehension of spoken English in everyday communication and increase their perceptual flexibility.

Abstract

This community service project addressed the wide range of basic English vocabulary among young EFL learners at PPA IO-0133 Krammer Hilina'a Church. Using a two-cycle classroom action research design (planning, action, observation, reflection), it aimed to strengthen learners' vocabulary through differentiated instruction supported by simplified materials, songs, and games. Participants were 23 learners aged 9–11 in Class E. Quantitative data came from vocabulary tests across the cycles; qualitative data from observations, field notes, and documentation analysed with the Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña (2014) model. Learners in the Good and Very Good categories rose from 26.09% in Cycle 1 to 65.22% in Cycle 2, while Poor and Very Poor fell from 39.13% to 0%. Qualitative findings showed greater confidence, participation, and recall. Differentiated instruction combined with playful, multisensory activities is an effective, inclusive approach for developing young learners' basic vocabulary in community-based settings.
