Abstract

This study aims to develop food storytelling materials within the context of tourism in Nias, as an effort to optimize the untapped culinary potential. Using the ADDIE model, the research formulates engaging narratives to enhance tourist appeal. Trial results at the Museum Pusaka Nias indicate that 87,4% of visitors felt more inclined to try local food after interacting with the storytelling materials. The developed materials effectively educate tourists about the ingredients and cooking processes of Nias cuisine while serving as a communicative tool to convey local culture and traditions. This study recommends an increase in stakeholder awareness regarding the benefits of storytelling in promoting tourism, as well as the importance of collaboration among academics, practitioners, and the community to create authentic and sustainable culinary experiences. These findings emphasize that innovation in the presentation of culinary stories can enhance tourism marketing and preserve the cultural heritage of Nias.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate translation loss and gain in the translation of Nias cultural jewelry terms into Indonesian and English. A qualitative research design was employed, using museum books and catalogues from Museum Pusaka Nias as data sources. Data were analyzed through descriptive and comparative qualitative methods to identify instances of loss and gain in both target languages. The results revealed nine instances of gain, mostly involving the addition of descriptive words such as "golden," "silver," "ivory," or "battle" to clarify meaning for non-Nias readers. Loss occurred in five cases, primarily due to omissions of gender, cultural specificity, or symbolic elements, such as the absence of the word "durian" in English translations. The study highlights the challenges of cross-linguistic and cross-cultural translation and emphasizes the importance of balancing accessibility and cultural fidelity in translating heritage terms

Abstract

This research aimed to develop an interactive educational game to improve students’ English speaking skills, focusing on the topics of Past Events and No Littering. The study employed the ADDIE development model, which consists of Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation stages. Data were collected through classroom observation, semi-structured interviews with teachers and students, questionnaires, expert validation sheets, and speaking performance tests. The speaking tests were administered in the form of pre-test and post-test, using oral tasks such as short monologues and guided dialogues that assessed fluency, pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammatical accuracy. The interactive educational game was developed using the Wordwall platform and integrated game-based learning features to promote active participation, motivation, and meaningful speaking practice. The results of media and material expert validation indicated that the product achieved a “Very Good” category with an average feasibility score of 90%. Statistical analysis of students’ speaking performance showed an improvement in the mean score from the pre-test to the post-test, indicating a positive effect of the game on students’ speaking ability. In addition, students’ responses during the implementation phase revealed high levels of engagement and motivation. Based on these findings, the developed interactive educational game is feasible and effective as a supplementary learning medium for enhancing students’ English speaking skills. Future research is recommended to apply the game on a larger sample and over a longer period, as well as to integrate similar game-based media into other English language skills such as listening or writing.

Abstract

This study examines the discourse structure and linguistic features of selected chapters in Psycholinguistics: Introduction and Applications (second edition) by Menn and Dronkers. Academic textbooks play a central role in shaping how disciplinary knowledge is organized and understood, yet relatively little attention has been paid to how psycholinguistics textbooks manage structure and language complexity for learners. The objective of this study is to identify organizational patterns, cohesion and coherence strategies, and indicators of linguistic complexity in the textbook. Using a qualitative discourse-analytic approach, purposively selected introductory and methods chapters were analyzed. Units of analysis included discourse moves, paragraphs, and sentences. The study combined close reading with analytical categories drawn from register and genre studies, focusing on rhetorical organization, cohesive devices, and syntactic and lexical features. The findings reveal a clear chapter-level structure resembling the Introduction–Method–Results–Discussion pattern, adapted for instructional purposes. The text makes frequent use of cohesive ties such as reference, conjunction, and lexical repetition to guide explanation. It also demonstrates dense noun phrases, nominalization, and specialized terminology that compress information while maintaining pedagogical clarity. The study concludes that psycholinguistics textbooks balance informational density with instructional accessibility, offering implications for textbook development and academic reading instruction.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Tourism communication constitutes a strategic element in shaping service quality, tourist experiences, and destination sustainability, particularly in emerging tourism areas. Somi Beach in Nias, Indonesia, possesses significant natural and cultural potential; however, its development continues to be constrained by limitations in English communication skills among local tourism actors. This study aims to examine the forms, causes, and impacts of English language barriers in tourism communication, as well as to identify the adaptive strategies employed by local tourism actors in their interactions with international visitors. The study adopts a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collected through in-depth interviews with local tour guides, homestay owners, food vendors, and tourism managers, complemented by direct field observations of service interactions. The findings indicate that English language barriers primarily occur at the level of functional communication, including difficulties in explaining tourist attractions, providing service information, responding to visitor inquiries, and engaging in intercultural interaction. These barriers are influenced by limited formal English education, insufficient tourism-specific English training, low frequency of English use, and a lack of confidence in oral communication. The impacts are reflected in reduced service effectiveness, the occurrence of misunderstandings, decreased tourist satisfaction, and missed opportunities for destination promotion. Despite these challenges, local tourism actors employ adaptive communication strategies, such as the use of basic English expressions, non-verbal communication, translation applications, and peer assistance. This study underscores the importance of developing context-based English language capacity as part of human resource strengthening to support sustainable tourism growth in emerging coastal destinations.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study is motivated by the limited effectiveness of tourism promotional media at 101 Nusa Lima Beach in representing destination potential as well as sustainable tourism values. This study aims to develop a tourism promotion brochure that has high communicative effectiveness while supporting the strengthening of sustainability-oriented local tourism development. A Research and Development (R&D) approach adapted from Borg and Gall was used with the stages of needs analysis, planning and design, initial product development, expert validation, revision, and final product presentation. Data collection was conducted through field observation, interviews with tourism stakeholders and visitors, and documentation to identify tourism potential, visitor information needs, and promotional constraints encountered. The brochure was developed by emphasizing clarity of information regarding tourist attractions, facilities, accessibility, and operating hours, as well as using persuasive language and visual elements that support destination image formation. The expert validation process involving academics and tourism practitioners was carried out to assess content feasibility, accuracy of language use, and media design quality. The results of the study show that the brochure produced was declared valid and feasible to be used as a promotional medium after a number of minor revisions. The final product integrates sustainable tourism messages that are aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with the aim of increasing destination visibility, strengthening promotional communication, and supporting sustainable local tourism development. These findings affirm that the development of promotional media based on linguistic studies and sustainability can function as an effective communication strategy for emerging coastal destinations.
