Abstract

Abstract

Recreational tourism destinations depend not only on natural attractions but also on the availability of supporting facilities that ensure effective information delivery, visitor safety, and comfort. One such facility is the information board, which serves as a visual medium for communicating essential messages to visitors. At Marisa Beach, existing information boards are limited, largely monolingual, and not systematically designed to meet diverse visitor needs. This study aims to develop bilingual information boards to support recreational tourism at Marisa Beach. A Research and Development (R&D) approach was employed using the Borg and Gall model, encompassing needs analysis, product planning, prototype development, expert validation, revision, and field testing. The resulting product consists of bilingual information boards in Indonesian and English containing site regulations, safety information, directional guidance, and brief descriptions of the destination. Expert validation results indicate that the product is appropriate for use after minor revisions, while field testing shows that the boards are readable, easy to understand, and positively received by visitors. These findings indicate that bilingual information boards enhance information accessibility and contribute to a more inclusive and well-organized recreational tourism environment. Consequently, the development of bilingual information boards is essential for improving tourism information services and supporting sustainable destination management at Marisa Beach.

Abstract

This study investigates students' perceptions of promotional content for Baho Gamira Recreational Tourism on TikTok, focusing on the integration of animated storytelling in tourism marketing. Utilizing a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through semi-structured interviews and online surveys involving 30 students to analyze the influence of visual narrativity and perceived authenticity on travel intentions. The findings identify a significant "Engagement-Trust Paradox," where creative animation achieved a 100% engagement rate in capturing attention but simultaneously triggered a profound "Trust Gap." Approximately 70% to 90% of participants expressed skepticism regarding the site's physical reality, perceiving animation as a tool that potentially masks logistical deficiencies or exaggerates natural beauty. Furthermore, 75% of respondents felt hindered from visiting due to a critical "Informational Gap" regarding precise location tags, road accessibility, and facility costs. This research concludes that for emerging destinations, creative digital narration must be harmonized with "aesthetic transparency" and factual documentation to convert online engagement into physical visits. Practically, the study recommends adopting a hybrid content strategy that integrates User-Generated Content (UGC) and real-life footage to bridge the gap between digital inspiration and logistical reality, ensuring that the visual "vibe" is supported by verifiable facts to reduce the perceived risk for potential visitors. Keywords: TikTok Marketing, Animated Storytelling, Student Perception, Digital Tourism, Trust Gap.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze classroom management problems in teaching English speaking skills at SMP Negeri 1 Gunungsitoli Idanoi in the 2024/2025 academic year. The research was conducted at SMP Negeri 1 Gunungsitoli Idanoi, Gunungsitoli City, North Sumatra, from July to August 2025. The population of this study consisted of eighth-grade students, with one English teacher and 20 students selected as research participants. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach. Data were collected using observation checklists, semi-structured interviews, and documentation to obtain comprehensive information related to classroom management practices. The collected data were analyzed using qualitative data analysis techniques, including data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. The results of the study revealed that classroom management in teaching English speaking skills had not been implemented optimally. Several classroom management indicators, such as effective time management, disciplinary control, the use of instructional media, and group or pair management, were not consistently applied during speaking activities. These conditions resulted in a noisy classroom atmosphere and uneven student participation. The main factors influencing these problems included students’ low motivation and interest, differences in language proficiency levels, limited school facilities, lack of teaching media, and teachers’ difficulties in managing time and maintaining classroom discipline. In conclusion, effective classroom management plays a crucial role in supporting the success of English speaking instruction. Therefore, English teachers are expected to improve classroom discipline, utilize technology-based learning media, and manage instructional time more efficiently to enhance students’ speaking performance.

Abstract

This study examines the role of English-language digital content on Instagram and TikTok in promoting Naruu Beach, Nias, as an emerging tourism destination. The rapid growth of visual-based social media has transformed destination marketing strategies, enabling lesser-known destinations to reach global audiences more effectively. Employing a qualitative descriptive research design supported by descriptive quantitative analysis, this study analyzes English-language promotional content published on Instagram and TikTok, focusing on content characteristics, storytelling strategies, visual presentation, and audience engagement metrics. Data were collected through systematic observation and documentation of relevant social media posts, including videos, captions, hashtags, and engagement indicators such as views, likes, comments, and shares. The findings indicate that the use of English as a global communication medium enhances international accessibility and destination visibility. Instagram content primarily contributes to destination image formation through visual aesthetics, while TikTok demonstrates stronger potential in expanding reach due to its algorithm-driven distribution and trend-based short videos. However, the results also reveal limitations in branding consistency, interactive engagement, and narrative depth. Despite these challenges, English-language short-form video content on Instagram and TikTok presents a cost-effective and strategic approach for promoting Naruu Beach in the global tourism market. This study contributes to digital tourism literature by providing empirical insights into social media-based promotion for emerging destinations and offers practical implications for sustainable destination marketing strategies.

Abstract

Spelling is an important component of English writing skills, especially for early learners. Repeated spelling errors not only indicate limited writing ability, but also reflect the cognitive processes involved in language acquisition and comprehension. This study aims to reanalyze the spelling errors of young learners at PPA Delada IO-126 Helefanikha, Gunungsitoli Idanoi, from a psycholinguistic perspective with a focus on orthographic knowledge. This study uses secondary data obtained from previous research on spelling errors. The data were analyzed by linking types of spelling errors, such as letter substitution, letter omission, and letter sequence errors, with the domains of language acquisition and language comprehension. The results showed that the dominant spelling errors were related to learners' weak orthographic knowledge, which indicated a negative relationship with their ability to acquire and comprehend written language. This study concludes that spelling errors are a representation of mental processes in language learning and have important implications for teaching English spelling to early learners.

Abstract

This research looks at how Nias culinary names represent sociolinguistic meanings in the gastronomy of Nias traditional foods. The study examines three issues: (1) how Nias culinary names function as a symbol of identity, (2) how they reflect variation and change in naming practices, and (3) how they transmit cultural knowledge across generations. As a result, the research seeks to explain the sociolinguistic functions encoded in the naming reasoning for Nias food items. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, data were gathered from community explanations of thirteen Nias cuisine names and analyzed using theme coding based on Wardhaugh and Fuller’s (2015) sociolinguistic elements. The findings show that all culinary names use local Li Niha/ Nias name naming, which indicates affiliation and group participation. Several names also exhibit systematic variation and change due to process-based naming patterns, contextual use in adat and hospitality contexts, and minimal evidence of modernity and cross-food comparability. Most artifacts also serve as cultural transmission instruments, conserving intergenerational information regarding preservation techniques, traditional culinary skills, customary etiquette, and historical survival practices. These findings indicate that Nias gastronomy is a linguistic cultural archive in which food naming promotes identification, adapts to social settings, and preserves historical values.

Abstract

English speaking skills play a crucial role in cultural tourism settings where tour guides serve as mediators between visitors and local heritage. However, in many cultural tourism sites, including Tundrumbaho Megalith Stone in South Nias, limited English proficiency and the lack of contextual learning materials hinder effective tour guiding practices. This study aims to develop an English tour guide book based on the historical and cultural heritage of Tundrumbaho as a medium to support future speaking practice. Employing a Research and Development (R&D) approach in its initial stages, the research focused on needs analysis, cultural documentation, and preliminary product design. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with traditional custodians and community members, as well as field observations at the Tundrumbaho site. The findings reveal that the site contains rich historical narratives related to ancestral leadership, megalithic traditions, and symbolic cultural values, yet these narratives are not communicated effectively to foreign visitors due to linguistic limitations. The needs analysis indicates the necessity for contextual English materials that integrate cultural content, tourism vocabulary, and communicative functions relevant to tour guiding tasks. The study concludes that the development of an English tour guide book is feasible and strategically important for enhancing speaking competence, supporting cultural tourism, and preserving local heritage. Further stages of R&D involving expert validation and product testing are recommended to measure the guidebook’s effectiveness in improving English speaking skills.
