Abstract

Kebenaran yang Hilang (KYH), a historical work by Farag Fouda, has garnered significant criticism, especially from Islamist groups, due to its unconventional methodologies and Fouda’s lack of formal training as a historian. These critiques reflect broader debates in Islamic historiography regarding the boundaries of historical scholarship and who is deemed qualified to contribute to this discourse. This study addresses two central issues: the historiographical nature of KYH and its legitimacy as an Islamic historical text, particularly in its treatment of early Islamic political history. Through historiographical analysis, the research explores Fouda’s reliance on traditional sources, his historical methods, and his diachronic, liberal perspective. The analysis places KYH within the theoretical frameworks used by informal historians. Despite Fouda's non-traditional background, this study demonstrates that KYH meets key criteria for a valid historical work by integrating both traditional and modern historiographical approaches. The research introduces fresh perspectives on Islamic history, while simultaneously challenging established narratives. It contends that, despite its controversial reception, KYH holds significant value as a historical text and makes a meaningful contribution to the field of Islamic historiography, meriting further scholarly critique and engagement.

Abstract

Before Hasbi ash-Shiddieqy, Indonesian fiqh was predominantly characterized by a rigid and blind imitation (taqlid) rigidly adopting interpretations from Islamic schools in regions such as the Hijaz, Egypt, and India. These foreign teachings often lacked relevance to Indonesia's cultural context, causing friction between Islamic jurisprudence and local customary law (hukum adat). In response, Hasbi developed an Indonesian fiqh that integrated local traditions, aligning with the national motto Bhineka Tunggal Ika, which UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres praised as crucial for a harmonious future in Southeast Asia. This approach fosters unity through the respectful recognition of cultural diversity. This study explores how sustaining Bhineka Tunggal Ika can be achieved through religious moderation based on Indonesian fiqh, particularly focusing on Hasbi ash-Shiddieqy. Employing qualitative research, the study utilized a literature review and thematic content analysis through four steps: data collection (gathering relevant information), data reduction (filtering out irrelevant data), data display (visually organizing key themes), and inference (synthesising findings to address research questions). This study reveal that Hasbi ash-Shiddieqy's Indonesian fiqh approach strengthens religious moderation by integrating universal Islamic principles with local traditions and promoting peaceful conflict resolution, while being consistent with national regulations-Presidential Regulation 58/2023 and Minister of Religion Regulation 3/2024-that promote unity in diversity and foster social cohesion in Indonesia. Therefore, Hasbi ash-Shiddieqy's Indonesian fiqh modernizes Islamic law by integrating maslahah (public welfare) and urf (cultural practices), moving beyond rigid taqlid, and deserves recognition as a vital source for strengthening religious moderation and sustaining Bhineka Tunggal Ika in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study investigates the implementation of Green Human Resource Management (GHRM) within Indonesia’s Islamic finance industry through a systematic literature review of 375 academic publications from 2015 to 2024. Existing research has largely centered on conventional financial institutions, offering limited insight into GHRM’s role in the Islamic finance context. The review reveals that GHRM practices—such as green recruitment, sustainability training, and eco-friendly incentives—not only improve operational efficiency but also align with Maqasid al-Shariah objectives. FinTech integration further enhances green initiatives by increasing transparency and access in Islamic financial services. Nonetheless, regulatory limitations and inconsistent institutional support hinder broader adoption. A key recommendation is the introduction of Green Employee Sukuk: Shariah-compliant instruments issued by financial institutions to fund employee-led sustainability programs. Returns are tied to the performance of green investments, incentivizing employee engagement while reinforcing organizational environmental commitments. Strengthening regulatory frameworks and leveraging FinTech innovations are crucial for optimizing GHRM’s impact on sustainability in Indonesia’s Islamic finance sector.

Abstract

This study is motivated by high expectations and government recognition of the strategic role of Private Islamic Higher Education Institutions (PTKIS), which have not been supported by an optimal organizational structure, particularly at Bhakti Persada Islamic College of Bandung (STAI Bhaper). The lack of adaptive organizational structure hinders the effectiveness of governance and the achievement of institutional goals. This research aims to formulate an ideal organizational structure model which aligns with the dynamic needs of PTKIS and the current regulations. This study employs a qualitative approach, utilizing a case study method, and draws on Henry Mintzberg’s organizational theory, as well as foundation and PTKIS regulations. Data were collected through document analysis, in-depth interviews, and participatory observation. Then, data were analyzed using Albert Humphrey’s SWOT model and validated with Lincoln and Guba’s trustworthiness criteria. The results of the study show that the current organizational structure tends to be bureaucratic with rigid work standards and strict supervision, but has the potential to transform into a more flexible professional organization. The main strength is in the leadership’s commitment and compliance with regulations, while the weakness is in the suboptimal coordination and limited resources. Digitalization and governance reform become strategic opportunities, while internal resistance emerges as the main challenge. This study recommends the implementation of a professional organizational model centered on strengthening managerial capacity, administrative digitalization, and competency-based coordination, which is expected to enhance the governance of STAI Bhakti Persada and become a trademark for other Private Islamic Higher Institutions (PTKIS).

Abstract

The relocation of the Abbasid capital from Baghdad to Samarra in 836 CE under Caliph al-Mu‘taṣim has long been interpreted as a decisive administrative maneuver that temporarily redefined the geography of Islamic governance. However, prevailing narratives often overlook the deeper political complexities and long-term ramifications of this move. This article seeks to reassess the motivations behind al-Mu‘taṣim’s decision and critically examine the consequences of transferring the seat of power to Samarra. Employing a historical-analytical methodology grounded in primary and secondary sources, the study interrogates factors such as military exigencies, personal predilections, and the caliph’s broader political calculus. The findings reveal that while Samarra emerged as a militarized enclave catering to the needs of the Turkish guard, it failed to eclipse Baghdad’s enduring political and symbolic centrality. The relocation inadvertently exacerbated factionalism and destabilized the caliphal institution, particularly under al-Mu‘taṣim’s successors. This article concludes that the capital shift did not yield the strategic coherence envisioned by its architect and, instead, exposes the fragility of centralized authority within the Abbasid polity. By reevaluating a pivotal yet understudied episode in Abbasid history, the study contributes to broader discussions on urban relocation, imperial governance, and the limits of caliphal power. Further research is needed to explore the longue durée implications of Samarra’s decline for subsequent Islamic political configurations.

Abstract

This study aims to provide empirical evidence on the effect of credit risk and company size on liquidity in the banking sector. Liquidity is an important aspect in assessing a bank's financial performance because it reflects the institution's ability to meet short-term obligations and maintain operational continuity. This study focuses on Bank Mandiri, which consistently shows liquidity stability during the 2013–2023 period, even amidst various economic conditions. The research approach used is quantitative with a time series regression model. Secondary data is obtained from Bank Mandiri's audited annual financial statements. The dependent variable, namely liquidity, is measured using the Loan to Deposit Ratio (LDR); while the independent variables are credit risk measured by the Non-Performing Loan (NPL) ratio, and company size measured by the natural logarithm of total assets. To ensure the validity of the model, classical assumption tests such as normality, multicollinearity, heteroscedasticity, and autocorrelation are carried out. The results of the study show that credit risk and company size have a positive and significant effect on liquidity, both partially and simultaneously. This finding indicates that increasing credit risk encourages banks to strengthen liquidity reserves, and large-scale companies have wider access to funding. This result differs from several previous studies, indicating that institutional characteristics and risk management strategies can affect the direction and strength of the relationship between variables. This study contributes to the literature by presenting time-series evidence on the determinants of liquidity at one of the largest state-owned banks in Indonesia.

Abstract

Abstract

This thesis examines the influence of the Agrarian Law of 1870 on the existence of the Arab community in Ampel, Surabaya, from 1870 to 1930. The issues addressed include the historical emergence of the Agrarian Law, its implementation, and its impact on the socio-economic conditions of the Arab community. This research employs historical methodology through steps of heuristics, verification, interpretation, and historiography, utilizing both historical and sociological approaches. The historical approach narrates events in chronological order, while the sociological approach reveals social processes using social change and economic development theory. The findings indicate that the Agrarian Law of 1870 arose in response to abuses within the Cultivation System and the influence of liberal thought in Europe. Its implementation encompasses regulations regarding Agrarian matters (Agrarische Besluit) and the granting of Erfpacht rights, which established social strata within Surabaya’s society, placing the Arab community of Ampel in the second tier as economic distributors. This article argues that the repercussion of the 1870 Agrarian Law had implications for the economic and social life of the Arab community, while also fostering the emergence of solidarity against foreign cultural impositions, reflected in the establishment of special schools for Arabs and natives.
