Abstract

Introduction: High-risk pregnancy is one of the factors that can affect a mother's emotional condition, especially in the third trimester. According to the 2022 Health Profile of Central Java Province, there were 1,250 cases of high-risk pregnancy in the region, with 320 cases occurring in Tegal City. Of these, 95 high-risk pregnancy cases were found at the Tegal Barat Health Center between January and October 2022. This study aims to describe the emotional experiences of mothers experiencing high-risk pregnancies in the third trimester. Method: The research uses a qualitative approach with a phenomenological method. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and observations with 6 mothers with high-risk pregnancies as main informants, along with 2 supporting informants, namely midwives and healthcare workers at the Tegal Barat Health Center. Result: The results show that mothers with high-risk pregnancies in the third trimester face various emotions, such as anxiety about the safety of the fetus (80% of informants), fear of complications during labor (67% of informants), and feelings of isolation due to physical activity restrictions (50% of informants). Emotional support from family and healthcare workers has been shown to play an important role in helping mothers face these challenges. However, the lack of understanding about their medical conditions often exacerbates the anxiety felt by the mothers. Conclusion: This study emphasizes the importance of psychosocial support from healthcare providers and family, particularly husbands, in aiding high-risk pregnant women to manage emotions. Such collaboration enhances the mother's quality of life and lowers the risk of complications.

Abstract

The Integrated Health Center is a community-based health initiative that aims to empower and facilitate the community's access to essential health services to reduce maternal mortality rate (MMR) and infant/child mortality rate. However, there is a need to increase the number of visits from mothers with toddlers to the Integrated Health Center, aiming for a 41% participation rate. This study seeks to investigate the role of cadres in promoting the involvement of mothers' toddlers in the Integrated Health Center program and to identify the factors that impact their participation rate. Conducted using a qualitative approach with a case study design and purposive sampling focusing on cadres, the data was gathered through in-depth interviews and focus group discussions (FGD), utilizing source and method triangulation for comprehensive insight. The findings indicate that cadres in the community serve as motivators, educators, and health service providers. They can recognize needs, address barriers, and facilitate the provision of health services. In addition to the cadres at the Integrated Health Posts (Posyandu), factors such as education level, economic status, and accessibility to health facilities play a role in the participation of mothers with toddlers in the Posyandu program. This research underscores the essential role of Posyandu cadres in encouraging the engagement of mothers with toddlers.

Abstract

Scraping therapy, known locally as kerokan, is a traditional treatment still widely practiced in Indonesia to address minor ailments such as colds, muscle aches, and fever. Family perceptions strongly influence the preference for scraping therapy as a primary form of home care. This study aims to explore how families perceive scraping therapy as an alternative to modern medicine. A qualitative case study design was employed, involving participants who had received or administered scraping therapy in the past year, were aged 18 or older, and participated voluntarily. Purposive sampling was used to select participants. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and focus group discussions (FGDs), focusing on their knowledge, motivations, and personal experiences. Thematic analysis was conducted to identify key patterns and meanings. The findings revealed that many families consider scraping therapy effective, affordable, and easy to perform. It is viewed as a cultural tradition passed down through generations and a practical solution amid limited access to healthcare facilities. Nevertheless, some concerns were noted, including potential skin irritation and the absence of scientific validation. Despite these issues, cultural beliefs and accessibility make scraping therapy the preferred choice for minor health problems. Healthcare professionals should educate communities while respecting local traditions to ensure safe practices.

Abstract

Inadequate breast milk production for newborns might result in impaired growth and development. Enhancing breast milk production can be achieved by lactation massage, a therapeutic technique including massage movements on the breast area that stimulates lymphatic and blood circulation, increases milk production, and alleviates issues related to blocked milk ducts. The applicability of this scientific findings to health services is limited; therefore, midwifery support is essential in enhancing breast milk production with lactation massage. Midwives can utilize their expertise to perform lactation massage, thereby enhancing breast milk supply and promoting the effectiveness of exclusive breastfeeding. This study aimed to ascertain the correlation between midwives' knowledge and attitudes on the enhancement of breast milk production by lactation massage. The method used was cross-sectional, and the target population consists of midwives attending Harapan Bersama Polytechnic. Utilizing a total sampling technique involving 11 individuals. Data were acquired by surveys and subsequently analyzed using the chi-square method. The study's results yielded a P value of 0.04 (α0.05), indicating a correlation between midwives' knowledge and attitudes on the enhancement of breast milk supply via lactation massage, with an odds ratio of 0.33. Midwives' knowledge and abilities must be improved in order to use lactation massage to boost the supply of breast milk.

Abstract

Family support plays a vital role in promoting the health of pregnant women, particularly in ensuring they meet their daily nutritional needs. This qualitative case study was conducted in Kelurahan Baru, Pasar Rebo District, East Jakarta, and focused on investigating how family support contributes to increasing pregnant women’s awareness of nutritional adequacy. The study involved pregnant women and their closest family members, selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using in-depth interviews and focus group discussions to gain a greater insight into how family support influences nutritional behavior. The findings show that husbands and mothers-in-law are perceived as the most influential sources of support. Pregnant women reported receiving emotional encouragement, help with food preparation, and collaborative decision-making, all of which increased their nutritional awareness and consistency in maintaining a healthy diet. Additionally, the study identified the family's nutrition knowledge, communication quality, and access to nutritious foods as key factors that shaped the effectiveness of support. In conclusion, the study emphasizes the importance of involving close family members in maternal nutrition efforts. Empowering families through education and encouraging their active involvement in maternal care can be a strategic approach to improving both maternal and fetal health outcomes during pregnancy.

Abstract

Background: The provision of exclusive breastfeeding for premature infants often faces challenges due to the infant's inability to breastfeed directly from the breast, which hinders the initiation of breastfeeding and the success of exclusive breastfeeding. According to data from the Slawi Public Health Center, the coverage of exclusive breastfeeding for premature infants remains low. This study aims to analyze strategies for implementing exclusive breastfeeding and to identify its supporting and inhibiting factors. Methods: The research method employed a qualitative approach with accompaniment provided to two mothers with infants aged ≤4 months who were committed to exclusive breastfeeding, along with two triangulation informants. The accompaniment was carried out until the infants reached six months of age through home visits conducted two to three times. Results: The findings revealed a strong commitment from mothers to maintain exclusive breastfeeding, despite external pressures such as the promotion of formula feeding and early complementary feeding. Intensive mentoring, family support, and health education were identified as the main supporting factors. Meanwhile, the lack of understanding among the surrounding community emerged as a significant barrier, which should be addressed through continuous educational interventions. Conclusion: In general, exclusive breastfeeding practices for premature infants in the Slawi area are considered satisfactory. It is recommended that the local health center continue providing ongoing support to mothers to maintain exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months and continue breastfeeding up to two years, particularly for mothers of premature infants.
