Abstract

Abstract

Biological observations and life cycle studies of Euploea netscheri Snellen, 1899 on Hoya species were conducted at Yadikap Garden, Arso 2, Keerom, Papua, Indonesia, from June to August 2024.  Eggs laid by female butterflies on Hoya leaves were observed to record hatching time and the duration of the egg stage. Additionally, the total number of larval instars, the duration of each instar, and the duration of the pupal stage until emergence of the imago were documented. Measurements of the length of eggs, larvae, pupae, and adult butterflies were carried out using a caliper. The behavior and morphological characteristics of each larval instar, as well as those of the pupae and adults, were observed and recorded. Female E. netscheri butterflies were found to lay eggs on the leaves of Hoya globulifera and H. pachiphylla. The species completed its life cycle in approximately 22–25 days, consisting of an egg stage of about 3 days, a larval stage of 12–14 days, a pre-pupal stage of 1 day, and a pupal stage lasting 6–7 days. The results of this study provide the first record of the distribution, biology, and life cycle of E. netscheri in Keerom, Papua. New information is also presented regarding its larval host plants, namely H. globulifera and H. pachiphylla.

Abstract

Lake Sentani is the largest lake in Papua and serves as an important source of raw water, fisheries, and livelihoods for communities in Jayapura. Increasing anthropogenic pressures from settlements, agriculture, aquaculture, and tourism have raised concerns regarding the deterioration of its water quality. This study compared the water quality status of Lake Sentani using five assessment methods: Pollution Index (IP), STORET, CCME-WQI, BC-WQI, and NSF-WQI. Water samples were collected from five stations representing littoral, limnetic, and human-activity-influenced zones. The analyzed parameters included physical (temperature, TDS, TSS, turbidity, and Secchi depth), chemical (pH, dissolved oxygen, BOD₅, COD, nitrate, phosphate, ammonia, and sulfate), and biological (total coliform) indicators. The results indicated IP values ranging from 3.95 to 6.43 (lightly to moderately polluted), STORET scores from –20 to –44 (moderately to heavily polluted), CCME-WQI values from 47.3 to 71.2 (marginal to fair), BC-WQI values from 44.7 to 68.5, and NSF-WQI values from 46.1 to 70.3. Station S3 (Sentani Town) consistently exhibited the poorest water quality, whereas Station S4 (Ayapo) showed the best condition. Elevated BOD₅, phosphate, ammonia, and total coliform were identified as the principal parameters contributing to water quality degradation. The five assessment methods produced generally similar spatial patterns across the sampling stations, with Pearson correlation coefficients ranging from 0.89 to 0.97, although these correlations should be interpreted cautiously given the limited number of monitoring stations. Among the evaluated approaches, CCME-WQI provided a balanced assessment by integrating the scope, frequency, and magnitude of water quality exceedances, making it a suitable framework for routine monitoring of tropical lake ecosystems under the conditions examined in this study.

Abstract

Land degradation and the reduction of vegetation cover along riverbanks and critical land areas in Walma Village, Skanto District, Keerom Regency, have highlighted the need for greater youth involvement in environmental conservation. Limited awareness and a lack of participatory space for young people in environmental management have contributed to the slow handling of this issue. This community service activity aims to improve the knowledge, skills, and active role of youth in Walma Village in greening and environmental management efforts through tree-planting action. Implementation methods included socialization and education on environmental conservation, training on proper seedling and planting techniques, joint planting action on critical land and riverbanks, and post-planting seedling maintenance assistance. The activity was carried out from 18 to 25 July 2026, involving 20 young people from the Walma Village Youth Organization (Karang Taruna). The results showed a 62% increase in youth knowledge of environmental conservation from pre-test to post-test, the successful planting of 400 protective and productive tree seedlings on 3 hectares of land, a 95% participant attendance rate, and an 88% seedling survival rate at one-month post-planting monitoring. Participating youth showed high enthusiasm and committed to forming an environmental care group to ensure sustainable maintenance. This activity makes a real contribution to strengthening the role of youth as agents of change in environmental preservation in Keerom Regency.

Abstract

Seluruh parameter abiotik berbeda signifikan antar zona (ANOVA, p < 0,001).
