Abstract

The tridharma of higher education is the main task and function for every lecturer that must be carried out every semester. One of the activities of the tridharma of higher education is community service which aims to make a scientific contribution owned by each lecturer. On this occasion, the UMA mechanical engineering study program had the opportunity to carry it out in Tanjung Rejo village, Percut Sei District. The master who owns the mangrove forest tourist attraction. The tourist attraction is located on the coast of the Strait of Malacca, where geographically it has the potential for renewable energy, namely wind energy. Based on the measurement data, the average wind speed was obtained 2 m/s. From the potential power that can be generated through a horizontal type wind turbine theoretically 59.8 W. Actually, this turbine has an average power of 20.9 W. This difference occurs due to an efficiency factor of 35%. The potential of wind energy in Tanjung Rejo Tourism Village is very promising for development. This effort will not only increase the energy independence of the village, but also reduce carbon emissions and preserve the environment.

Abstract

Biodiesel berbasis minyak goreng limbah telah menarik perhatian sebagai sumber energi alternatif yang berkelanjutan. Penelitian ini menganalisis pengaruh waktu reaksi terhadap karakteristik kualitas biodiesel, termasuk titik nyala, viskositas, densitas, bilangan oksidasi, bilangan asam, dan bilangan iodin. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa waktu reaksi memiliki dampak signifikan pada titik nyala, dengan nilai yang lebih tinggi mengindikasikan stabilitas termal yang lebih baik. Sementara itu, viskositas menunjukkan konsistensi, menandakan ketepatan dalam proses produksi biodiesel. Densitas biodiesel tetap stabil pada nilai target standar, menunjukkan konsistensi dalam produksi. Namun, penelitian lebih lanjut diperlukan untuk memahami faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi densitas. Peningkatan bilangan oksidasi mengindikasikan pentingnya penanganan yang tepat untuk mengendalikan stabilitas oksidatif biodiesel. Meskipun bilangan asam cenderung bervariasi, penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa waktu reaksi mungkin tidak secara signifikan mempengaruhi nilai tersebut. bilangan iodin, penelitian mengungkapkan hubungan positif antara waktu reaksi dan bilangan iodin. Secara keseluruhan, temuan ini memberikan pemahaman yang komprehensif tentang karakteristik biodiesel, namun menunjukkan bahwa faktor-faktor kompleks juga memengaruhi sifat-sifat biodiesel secara keseluruhan. Oleh karena itu, analisis lebih lanjut diperlukan untuk memastikan kinerja optimal dan keamanan biodiesel dalam aplikasi praktis, sekaligus menekankan perlunya mempertimbangkan berbagai faktor yang memengaruhi produksi biodiesel secara keseluruhan. Temuan ini dapat membantu pengembangan lebih lanjut dalam produksi biodiesel yang efisien dan ramah lingkungan dari minyak goreng limbah.

Abstract

Plastic waste, which is difficult to decompose, poses a significant environmental hazard. This study aims to analyze the effect of filter diameter on shredding outcomes of a 250 kg/hour plastic shredding machine. Experimental methods were used with HDPE and PP plastics and filter diameters of 16 mm and 20 mm. Results showed that the 16 mm filter yielded better efficiency for HDPE at 82.08%, while the 20 mm filter achieved the highest efficiency at 167.4% for HDPE. For PP, the 20 mm filter yielded the highest efficiency at 44.88%. The findings highlight that filter diameter significantly affects machine performance, with optimal results observed with the 20 mm filter for HDPE.

Abstract

Plastic waste is a critical issue underlying the design of the hot press machine. This study aims to design a hot press machine capable of processing plastic waste into plastic sheet products and evaluate the safety and operational aspects of the machine. The method employed involves designing modelling using SolidWorks software and collecting data on the machine's design specifications. The results indicate that (1) the critical load capacity of the hollow steel frame reaches 4019.23 kN, (2) the spring pressure is 100,000 Pa, (3) the jack pressure is 5.3 MPa, (4) the electrical power consumption of the hot press machine is 2.22 kW, and (5) the electrical power for 10 cartridge heaters is 1,472.42 Watts. The mould pressure is 2.20 kN with a surface area of 4.16 cm², a plastic sheet thickness of 10 mm, and a 950 kg/m³ density. In conclusion, the machine frame dimensions are 600 mm x 600 mm x 1200 mm, utilizing 40 mm x 40 mm hollow steel profiles. Safety evaluations emphasize the importance of using personal protective equipment (PPE), adhering to operational procedures, and preparing for emergencies.

Abstract

This research aims to provide a detailed guideline for the replacement process of superheater tubes in the Takuma Boiler N-900 R. The superheater tube is a critical component in a boiler that increases the temperature of the steam exiting the boiler to achieve higher temperatures. Superheaters have been utilized since the early 20th century, coinciding with the initial use of steam engines. The research employed direct observation to analyze the causes of failure in the superheater tubes. The primary objective is to present the necessary processes and steps for replacing superheater tubes. The findings indicate that the primary cause of failure in the superheater tubes is overheating, necessitating their replacement. The replacement process involves several stages, including disassembling old superheater tubes, installing new ones, and testing hydrostatic and steam. The results of this replacement process show improved efficiency in the superheater and prevention of further failures in the superheater tubes.

Abstract

Program Pengabdian Kepada Masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan efisiensi dan keberlanjutan industri batu bata merah melalui inovasi teknologi dan material ramah lingkungan. Fokus utama program adalah pengembangan mesin batu bata inovatif dan formulasi material alternatif menggunakan limbah industri. Metode yang digunakan meliputi analisis kebutuhan, pengembangan teknologi, formulasi material, implementasi, dan evaluasi. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa mesin inovatif yang dikembangkan dapat meningkatkan efisiensi produksi, sementara formulasi material menggunakan abu terbang, abu sekam padi, dan abu janjang kelapa sawit menghasilkan batu bata dengan kuat tekan yang lebih tinggi dibandingkan bata konvensional. Program ini berhasil mentransfer teknologi dan pengetahuan kepada mitra UKM, membuka jalan bagi transformasi industri batu bata menuju praktik yang lebih berkelanjutan.

Abstract

Plastic waste is one of the most significant contributors to waste production in Indonesia, reaching 65.2 million tons per year. Efforts to reduce waste volume are carried out by shredding plastic into smaller sizes to facilitate recycling. This study aims to analyze the production capacity, quality, and efficiency of a rotating blade-based plastic shredding machine and to determine the necessary maintenance to sustain its long-term performance. The method employed is a quantitative approach, which involves recording and analyzing data from machine tests using 10 samples of HDPE and PP plastic. The results indicate that the machine's production capacity for HDPE plastic is 3.43 kg/min, while for PP plastic, it is 1.42 kg/min. The study concludes that the rotating blade-based plastic shredding machine is effective in processing plastic waste, with results varying based on the type of plastic material.

Abstract

This study aims to this study was to examine the effect of polypropylene (PP) plastic and activated carbon (AC) composition in a plastic composite material. The composite material was mixed using an internal mixer at a processing temperature of 220°C and a speed of 50 rpm. The mixture was then molded with dimensions of 100 mm in length, 15 mm in width, and 2,5 mm in thickness. The sample molding was performed using a compression molding method with a pressure of 1500 MPa at 250°C and a holding time of 300 minutes. Subsequently, the samples were cut according to the bending test dimensions following ASTM D790-03 standards, with dimensions of 100 mm x 12.7 mm x 2.5 mm. The test results for the polypropylene-activated carbon composite in the first composition showed a maximum stress point of 36.95 MPa and an elastic modulus of 4.3096 MPa, while the second composition showed a maximum stress point of 34.58 MPa and an elastic modulus of 3.371 MPa. These findings indicate that increasing the activated carbon composition in polypropylene polymer results in a reduction in bending strength.

Abstract

In general, every livestock needs feed in the form of a mixture of livestock feed. The livestock feed fermentation process is currently phenomenal because it provides benefits that are felt by farmers. Maybe many people know the fermentation as a process of making supplement drinks only. It turns out not, the fermentation process can be used as an alternative to making high-quality livestock feed. In addition to being very simple to make, making feed by fermentation also saves time and money, because farmers are no longer busy with herding or grazing. This horizontal mixer machine has a capacity of 100 kg / Batch. In making this machine includes manufacturing processes such as: welding, grinding, drilling, bending, cutting torch or gas cutting, and non-permanent joints, namely nut and bolt joints. The components of the machine are: frame, tube, double screw, axle shaft, bossing, gear box, housing bearing, block bearing, pulley, v-belt, and electric motor. And then assembled and put together into a machine. From the above explanation, the following conclusions can be drawn: 1. Horizontal mixer machine with a tube diameter of 60 cm and a width of 90 cm, is capable of mixing 100 kg/batch of animal feed. 2. Horizontal mixer machine using a double screw produces a more homogeneous mixture compared to using the manual method.

Abstract

Krisis energi global dan rendahnya literasi energi bersih di kalangan pelajar mendorong perlunya edukasi teknologi alternatif yang berkelanjutan. Kegiatan pengabdian ini dilatarbelakangi oleh kebutuhan untuk meningkatkan wawasan siswa terhadap teknologi energi terbarukan, khususnya fuel cell. Tujuan kegiatan ini adalah untuk memperkenalkan prinsip dasar kerja teknologi fuel cell serta membangun pemahaman dan keterampilan awal siswa Sekolah Menengah Kejuruan (SMK) sebagai bagian dari edukasi transisi energi hijau. Pengumpulan data dilakukan sebagai langkah evaluatif untuk meninjau keberhasilan kegiatan PkM. Tolok ukur keberhasilan ditentukan berdasarkan peningkatan pemahaman kognitif siswa serta tingkat partisipasi dan respons positif terhadap materi pelatihan. Metode pelaksanaan menggunakan pendekatan pelatihan interaktif, pendidikan masyarakat, dan substitusi ipteks. Peserta kegiatan berjumlah lebih dari 50 siswa jurusan Bisnis dan Manajemen di SMK Swasta Nurul Amaliyah Tanjung Morawa. Teknik pengumpulan data mencakup pre-test dan post-test untuk mengukur peningkatan pemahaman, observasi untuk menilai keterlibatan siswa, serta wawancara semi-terstruktur untuk menggali persepsi dan ketertarikan siswa terhadap teknologi energi bersih. Analisis data dilakukan secara deskriptif kuantitatif dan naratif. Hasil menunjukkan adanya peningkatan skor pemahaman peserta dari 42% menjadi 81%, disertai partisipasi aktif dan ketertarikan tinggi terhadap materi. Peserta juga mampu mengaitkan prinsip kerja fuel cell dengan peluang usaha berbasis energi bersih. Kegiatan ini membuktikan bahwa edukasi ipteks lintas disiplin dapat menjembatani kesenjangan pemahaman teknologi dan membentuk kesadaran technopreneurship. Oleh karena itu, model pelatihan ini berpotensi diterapkan secara lebih luas dalam satuan pendidikan vokasi non-teknik untuk mendukung transisi energi nasional.
