Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the students’ difficulties in reading comprehension on narrative text at Senior High School 2 Muaro Jambi. This research was conducted at Senior High School Number 2 Muaro Jambi. This research is categorized as a quantitative research design with a descriptive qualitative approach.  The subject of this research was 30 students of class eleventh. This research instrument used questionnaires to collect the data. The questionnaire contains 25 statements of the 25 statements. The result of this study is that the students of eleventh grade at Senior High School Number 2 Muaro Jambi in reading comprehension on narrative text have difficulty in making inferences, identifying references, finding specific information, and the understanding meaning of words or vocabulary.

Abstract

This research aimed to analyze the ability of tenth-grade students at SMAN 2 Muaro Jambi in writing application letters, with a specific focus on their content writing skills. This study employed a quantitative descriptive method. The subjects of the research were 35 tenth-grade students at SMAN 2 Muaro Jambi. The data collection technique used was a writing test. The research utilized descriptive statistics to analyze the data. The results show that 29% of students demonstrated very high ability, 20% high ability, 14% moderate ability, and 37% low ability in overall application letter writing. Regarding content specifically, 11% of students showed very high ability, 17% high ability, 0% moderate ability, and 72% low ability. The study concludes that while students showed varied abilities in overall application letter writing, a significant majority demonstrated low ability in writing the content of application letters.

Abstract

This research aimed to investigate the correlation between grammatical competence and English text writing ability among eleventh-grade students at SMAN 9 Kota Jambi. This research was quantitative with a correlational approach. The subjects of the research were 36 eleventh-grade students at SMAN 9 Kota Jambi in Academic Year 2023/2024. The techniques of collecting data were a grammar test and a writing test. The research used the Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient to analyze the data. The results of the research show that there is a very low positive correlation (r = 0.166) between students' grammatical competence and their ability in writing English texts. This correlation is not statistically significant at both 5% and 1% levels. The findings indicate that 11.11% of students had excellent performance in the grammar test, while 16.67% showed very good performance in the writing test. The study concludes that there is no significant correlation between students' grammatical competence and their ability in writing English texts.

Abstract

This research aims to investigate the influence of the Hangman game on the vocabulary mastery of 10th-grade students at SMAN 8 Jambi City. The study was conducted using a pre-experimental method with two groups of classes: an experimental class taught using the Hangman game and a control class taught using the conventional methods. Data were collected through a test administered before and after the treatment. The results revealed that the students in the experimental class showed an improvement in their vocabulary mastery. These findings suggest that incorporating the Hangman game as a supplementary teaching strategy not only improves learning outcomes but also motivates students through active participation and enjoyable practice. Therefore, it is suggested that English teachers should consider implementing the Hangman game or a similar interactive game to create a more engaging learning environment.

Abstract

This study looks into how students see YouTube as an extra tool to help them improve their English Speaking skills at Batanghari University. It focuses on four main aspects: vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, and fluency. The research used a qualitative case study method, with interviews conducted with 10 students who actively use YouTube in their learning process. The results show that YouTube can support vocabulary growth, grammar awareness, and pronunciation practice through exposure to authentic language and engaging content. Its impact on fluency is mixed some students feel more confident and speak more naturally, while others still struggle with hesitation due to factors like fast-paced speech or unfamiliar accents. The results of the research are students perception on the use of YouTube for learn English is positive, from YouTube they can learn anything especially for speaking skills. Also YouTube can make students good pronounce, increase students vocabulary, it helpful for grammar but less helpful for fluently. Overall, YouTube is considered a useful addition to learning, especially when paired with interactive practice and teacher guidance.

Abstract

Listening is one of the essential skills in learning English. However, many students struggle to develop strong listening abilities. Several factors contribute to their low performance in this area. This study aimed to address students’ difficulties in mastering listening skills by applying a drama movie reviewing technique. The research used a research and development design, involving 30 students from general conversation classes. Data were gathered through interviews, questionnaires, and listening achievement tests. The findings revealed that students who were taught using the drama movie viewing technique achieved a higher average listening score (81.46). Additionally, the technique contributed 61.8% to the improvement of their listening skills.

Abstract

ABSTRACT The objectives of this study were: (1) to identify the learners’ needs for eighth-grade students of SMP N 3 Jambi, and (2) to develop appropriate materials for eighth-grade students of SMP N 3 Jambi. This was a Research and Development (R&D) study. The subjects of the study were the students in the eighth grade of SMP N 3 Jambi. The research procedures were adapted from Jolly and Bolitho’s model in Tomlinson (1998) with some modifications, consisting of conducting the need analysis, writing the course grid, developing the first draft, getting expert judgment, and evaluating the first draft, also revising the first draft of the materials. The instruments to collect the data were need analysis questionnaire and an expert judgment questionnaire. The data from the need analysis were analyzed quantitatively using frequency and percentage, then the results were used to develop the course grid. The data from the expert judgment were analyzed quantitatively through descriptive statistics while the suggestions were used to revise the first draft of the materials. The product of this research is a set of writing materials entitled “Guide for Writing” for students of the eighth grade of SMP N 3 Jambi. The writing materials consist of three units, “My Best Friend”, “My Unforgettable Experience”, and “My Favorite Story”. Each unit consists of Pre-writing, Drafting, Responding, and Editing tasks ranging from 15-17 tasks. Based on the research findings from the expert judgment, the whole aspects of the developed materials were 3.62 which was in the range of 3.25 < x ≤ 4 and can be categorized as “very good”.

Abstract

This community service program, designed as English training based on interactive learning and character education, aims to enhance both language competence and character development of high school students in preparing for global challenges. The program was conducted over two months through eight online sessions and supported by eight months of intensive mentoring via WhatsApp groups. The training materials integrated Indonesian cultural elements and global issues while instilling the CERMAT character values (Intelligent, Energetic, Brave, Diligent, Millennial, Noble Morals, and Responsible). Evaluation results indicate that the program successfully met participants’ expectations, particularly through interactive learning methods and continuous mentoring that addressed students’ needs. Significant improvements were observed in English skills, including listening, speaking, grammar, writing, and vocabulary, as well as in character aspects such as self-confidence, responsibility, cooperation, and courtesy. With its holistic approach, the program not only strengthened students’ linguistic competence but also fostered positive character development, thereby better preparing them to face challenges at national and global levels. Recommendations for future implementation include greater flexibility in duration and diversification of materials to optimize effectiveness and sustain students’ learning motivation.

Abstract

Kemiskinan merupakan kondisi yang hingga saat ini masih menjadi permasalahan di Indonesia. Hal ini dapat dilihat dari masih tingginya jumlah penduduk miskin di Indonesia pada tahun 2021 mencapai 26,5 juta jiwa. Kemiskinan ini tidak terjadi begitu saja, salah satunya karena minimnya penghasilan rumah tangga sehingga membuat mereka tak mampu memenuhi kebutuhan sehari-hari. Pemberantasan kemiskinan di Indonesia memerlukan kerjasama berbagai pihak, baik pemerintah maupun swasta. Oleh sebab itu, tim pengabdian masyarakat bersama LAZ Dompet Dhuafa menjalankan program berbasis kearifan lokal untuk meningkatkan ekonomi masyarakat pesisir melalui pemberdayaan perempuan. Program ini menyasar 50 perempuan keluarga nelayan kerang hijau di wilayah pesisir pantai Serang, Provinsi Banten, Indonesia. Wilayah ini merupakan wilayah penghasil kerang hijau tetapi belum terbudidayakan dengan baik. Praktek nelayan masih dilakukan secara manual sehingga hasil yang didapatkan tidak optimal. Hal ini berdampak pada tingkat penghasilan masyarakat yang masih rendah. Program pengabdian dalam bentuk pemberdayaan masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kesejahteraan masyarakat melalui pemberdayaan perempuan keluarga nelayan. Program dijalankan selama satu tahun dengan pendampingan penuh. Program ini melingkupi pemberian modal usaha, pelatihan skil, dan pendampingan usaha. Evaluasi dampak program ini dihitung dengan metode SLIA (Sustainable Livelihood Impact Assessmen. Hasil program pengabdian ini menunjukkan bahwa program memberikan dampak yang positif terhadap kesejehteraan masyarakat. Hal ini dapat dilihat baik dari aspek peningkatan pendapatan, aspek fisik, aspek alam, aspek sumber daya manusia, maupun aspek sosial.

Abstract

The purpose of the research was to improve students’ vocabulary ability through cooperative learning model Teams Game Tournament type at second year students of MTs NurulFalah Jambi. The target of this research is hoped that cooperative learning model teams’ game tournament type can be one of model that can be used by the English teacher in teaching vocabulary. This research used classroom action research. This research conducted in MTs NurulFalah Jambi, and the subject of research was the second-year students with total of student are 34 students in academic year 2018/2019. The researcher used observation, test, and questionnaire to get the data. The procedure in this research is referring to classroom action research that consists of four elements: planning, acting, observing, and reflecting which did in every cycle. The researcher did cycle 1, and then the researcher arranged the action plan on the result of the reflection at the first cycle. There was the improvement of students’ vocabulary ability, the test score at cycle 1 was 14,49% and at cycle 2 was 31,54 %. There are 6 teams, 3 teams got the award as “Super team” they are group 3, 4, and 5. 2 Teams got the award as “Great Team” they are group 2 and 7. While 2 teams got the award as “Good Team” they are group 1 and 6. This research has revealed that Cooperative Learning Model Team Game Tournament Type can be an alternative to solve the students’ problems in vocabulary.
