Abstract

The life of a society always adapts to the characteristics of its environment and its changes, and social changes in a society also affect changes in environmental conditions. This research aims to describe the metabolic relationship between the community and the river and analyse the form of interaction rift due to social change and river ecosystem degradation. This research uses qualitative methods, with the type of phenomenological research. The research was conducted in North Kuin Village, Banjarmasin City. Data were collected using observation, in-depth interviews and documentation. Data were analysed using the Miles & Huberman interactive model. The results showed that the community's interaction with the river in the past was intertwined in a strong attachment. The community depends on the resources and services of the river environment to sustain their daily lives. This is sourced from the condition of the Kuin River ecosystem which is still balanced and has not experienced high pollution. However, the condition of the river ecosystem then experienced significant degradation. So that the interaction between the community and the river has cracked or can no longer support each other. Ironically, the degradation of the Kuin river ecosystem is dominantly caused by various community activities from upstream to downstream of the Kuin river. Finally, alienation between the community and the river is created, exploitation that continues to be carried out by humans results in both (humans and rivers) exploiting and being exploited. Behavioural changes are needed in the community in interacting with the river, as well as action programs to restore the condition of the Kuin river ecosystem, to create a sustainable river community life.

Abstract

Differences in forms and demands among various environmental movements in South Kalimantan, which are influenced by ideological streams, are the main obstacles in the formation of strong solidarity to achieve environmental protection goals. The research was conducted to produce a map of environmental movement streams and description of the dynamics of the environmental movement in South Kalimantan. The research used qualitative methods. Data collection techniques used observation, in-depth interviews and documentation. The results stated that there are 4 (four) streams that exist in the environmental movement in South Kalimantan, namely: institutional, functional, marxism and critical. Functional stream is the most dominating stream. Functional stream is reflected in several movements, namely Sahabat Bekantan, Borneo Urban Lab, Eco Enzyme Nusantara, Eco Fashion, Putik Bersih and WALHI South Kalimantan. There is an influence of the critical stream which is reflected in the Eco Fashion movement and the Putik Bersih movement. The influence of institutional stream is seen in the Save Meratus movement, XR Meratus, and WALHI South Kalimantan. Then, the WKR (Wilayah Kelola Rakyat) movement by WALHI South Kalimantan reflects the influence of marxism. The presence of new variants of the environmental movement in South Kalimantan has influenced the widespread understanding of environmental movement streams. Research shows that openness to various streams can strengthen the environmental movement. By combining different approaches, movements such as Putik Bersih, Save Meratus, and WALHI South Kalimantan have proven their ability to be more dynamic and responsive in facing complex environmental challenges. However, paradigm differences still hamper the birth of a collective struggle of the environmental movement in South Kalimantan.

Abstract

The existence, ecological thinking, and livelihood of local communities are often ignored in the management of peatlands for economic and protection purposes. This research aims to examine the way of life and ecological thinking of peat communities from a sustainable development perspective. The approach used is qualitative and type of case study research. Data was collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. Data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model. The research found that the management of the natural resources of the peat ecosystem is the economic foundation of the community in Jambu Baru Village, which is manifested through various economic activities. The management is carried out to avoid the conversion of the peat ecosystem so that the condition of the peat ecosystem in the Jambu Baru Village area is still maintained and 93.69% of them still have high vegetation. Furthermore, the community moved collectively to reject the expansion of oil palm plantation companies targeting peatlands in Jambu Baru Village. Ecological thinking that exists in society is a manifestation of the sustainable development concept, which carries three dimensions of interest, namely ecological sustainability, social development, and economic development. Communities can realize these three dimensions of interest proportionally, and prove that peatlands are not marginal lands. Simply by managing the sources of life provided by the peat ecosystem with a sustainable approach, quality of life and intergenerational justice can be realized. Thus, strengthening the livelihoods of local communities is an approach that must be promoted to realize sustainable peatland management.

Abstract

Theoretically, ecotourism development is an effective means of realizing sustainable development. This research aims to analyze efforts to develop ecotourism at Matang Kaladan Hill in Tiwingan Lama Village, Banjar Regency. using the perspective of sustainable development theory (Burger). The research approach used is qualitative, and is a case study type of research. Data collection was carried out through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. Data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model. The research results show that the development of Bukit Matang Kaladan ecotourism has manifested several principles of sustainable development. First, ecological protection in the form of: 1) nature conservation programs; 2) prohibition on cutting down trees in conservation forest areas; 3) prohibition of littering. Second, social development in the form of: 1) growing tourism awareness among local communities based on the 7 (seven) sapta charm values; 2) increasing the level of public education. Third, economic development can be seen in: 1) the existence of original village income originating from ecotourism; 2) increasing employment opportunities for the community. However, the development of Bukit Matang Kaladan ecotourism cannot be said to have implemented the principles of sustainable development optimally and comprehensively. One of them is the principle of sustainable development, the point of ecological sustainability, which can be seen in the local community of Tiwingan Lama Village and tourists who do not keep the environment clean properly. The behavior of littering causes large amounts of plastic waste to be scattered in the Bukit Matang Kaladan ecotourism area. Therefore, it is hoped that the village government will continue to make efforts related to optimal ecological sustainability in the field of plastic waste management.

Abstract

The Martapura River plays a vital role as a source of life for the community, especially for women, whose almost entire daily activities are related to the river, such as washing, bathing, and earning a livelihood. This study aims to examine the correlation between ecosophy knowledge and women's behavior in managing and utilizing the river. This study uses a quantitative survey method, conducted in Sungai Rangas Tengah Village, Banjar Regency. The study population consisted of women aged 20 to 80 years who have lived in Sungai Rangas Tengah Village, Banjar Regency for more than 10 years. The research respondents were 50 women randomly selected using a purposive sampling technique. The data analysis techniques used include descriptive, simple regression, and correlation. The results of the study show that a deep understanding of ecosophy is positively and significantly correlated with women's behavior towards the river. The higher the understanding of ecosophy among women, the higher the level of responsive behavior towards the river. The contribution of ecosophy to women's behavior towards the river is 49%, while the remaining 51% is influenced by other factors beyond ecosophy understanding. However, there is still a noticeable gap between conceptual understanding and daily practice. Although the majority of respondents are aware of the dangers and negative impacts of dumping waste into the river, technical constraints such as the lack of waste management facilities and inadequate waste disposal systems hinder the implementation of ecosophy ethics in daily life. It is crucial to have continuous efforts from related parties to enhance women's understanding of ecosophy, whether through education, training, or empowerment, as a crucial aspect in promoting environmentally friendly practices, especially in river environments.

Abstract

The beauty industry is experiencing significant growth, leading to the potential for substantial environmental impact. Thus, changes in human behavior are key to addressing the environmental crisis. This research aims to determine the correlation between ecofeminism knowledge and consumer involvement in the Sociolla sustainable beauty movement in Banjarmasin. There are two hypotheses in this study: Hypothesis (1) Beauty product consumers understand ecofeminism ethics. Hypothesis (2) There is a relationship between ecofeminism ethics and the Sustainable Beauty Movement. This study uses a quantitative method with purposive sampling, involving 50 respondents. Data were collected using the ecofeminism ethics scale (consisting of 13 valid items, with α = 0.952) and the sustainable beauty movement scale (consisting of 14 valid items, with α = 0.865). The data analysis techniques employed include descriptive statistics, simple regression, and correlation. The results show a positive and moderately strong relationship between ecofeminism ethics and the sustainable beauty movement (r = 0.502). The more consumers understand ecofeminism ethics, the stronger their behavior supports environmental sustainability. The contribution of ecofeminism ethics to the sustainable beauty movement is 36.2%, with the remainder contributed by other factors. The conclusion of this study is that the first hypothesis (H₁) stating that women have an understanding of ecofeminism is accepted. Furthermore, the second hypothesis (H₂) stating that there is a relationship between ecofeminism ethics and the sustainable beauty movement, including the use of recycle stations among beauty product consumers, is accepted. Continuous use of beauty products by consumers can increase waste from used beauty products. Recycle stations aim to reduce environmental impact, and it is hoped that consumers who have not yet participated will join in realizing environmental sustainability, especially in the beauty industry.

Abstract

Coffee is one of the commodities in Batu Perahu Village, Batang Alai Timur District, Hulu Sungai Tengah Regency, which is located on the slopes of the Meratus Mountains. One of the reasons for the low economic growth in society is that the potential of coffee has not been maximized. Therefore, the service team implemented the program "Encouraging a Strategic Coffee Plantation Product Management Model in Batu Perahu Village". This program includes enabling, empowering and protecting which are then described in several activities, namely; 1) Coffee harvesting training; 2) Post-harvest coffee management training; 3) Procurement of post-harvest coffee management tools 4) Formation of farmer groups; 5) Branding Batu Perahu coffee; and 6) Building a marketing network for Batu Perahu coffee. Implementation of the program uses the live-in method in the village for 56 days, which runs from 18 July 2024 to 12 September 2024. The results achieved from this service program are increasing community capacity in harvesting coffee and managing post-harvest coffee which is supported by a pulper machine to support farmers coffee. As well as the formation of a coffee farmer group in Batu Perahu Village. In fact, Batu Perahu coffee already has branding with the name "Kopi Meratus" and also has a clear coffee marketing network. Through this program, the service team believes that the community's economy will improve in a sustainable manner, which has implications for the realization of coffee as a superior commodity and attraction of Batu Perahu Village.

Abstract

This community service program focuses specifically on Baandi-Andi culture and Dayak Meratus language which are threatened to be lost by modernization and social change through a series of activities. Therefore, this program is present as a step in the struggle against cultural diffusion in the Dayak Meratus community. The story archive in Baandi-andi culture includes in-depth interviews, transcripts of interview results, and story narration. Dayak Meratus language archives include vocabulary interviews, live-ins, school assignments, and alphabetizing. The data obtained was then validated through Forum Group Discussion (FGD). This program was implemented in Datar Ajab Village, Hantakan District, Hulu Sungai Tengah Regency. Data was obtained from interviews with resource persons who were considered adequate and mastered the issues that would be the focus of this program. The community service team managed to gather the community's views on the sustainability of their culture. The discussion involved villagers, village officials, and community leaders to identify the most threatened cultures and find solutions for their preservation. The results of this program include the collection of more than 500 vocabularies of the Dayak Meratus language and their meanings, as well as a draft collection of folklores that are an integral part of the Baandi-andi culture. With an archive that can be accessed by the wider community, it is hoped that the wider community can recognize and appreciate the richness of Dayak Meratus culture, and encourage participation in its preservation. The conclusion of this research confirms that the condition of Baandi-andi culture and Dayak Meratus language is increasingly eroded by the times. Therefore, there is a need for strong awareness and concrete actions to preserve the existing cultural heritage.

Abstract

Today's worsening climate change has a significant impact on the economic activities of the community in Jambu Baru Village, Kuripan Sub-district, Barito Kuala Regency. In general, the problems faced are also influenced by the management of economic resources that still depend on traditional methods. Almost all community economic activities have experienced a decline in income as a result of climate change. For example, from beje management, the community still relies heavily on income from the harvest, despite facing harvest uncertainty due to the uncertain season. Adaptation efforts have led to a new source of income, namely fishing tourism by utilizing beje, but is still positioned as additional income. In this case, creative economic opportunities have not been managed to support community adaptation in facing the impacts of climate change. This service program are highlighted problems: (1) The absence of creative and innovative ideas in the development of sustainable fishing tourism in Jambu Baru Village; (2) Women have not played a role in the management and development of fishing tourism in Jambu Baru Village. Problem solutions are designed using a sustainable development approach, which emphasizes the importance of climate change mitigation and adaptation in the context of peatland management. Concretely, the program implemented is strengthening the role of women in realizing sustainable and inclusive tourism. After carrying out village discussions and workshops, women's groups in Jambu Baru Village have creative and innovative ideas for the development of sustainable fishing tourism. The commitment of the women's groups to play an active role as a social base to implement these ideas was also strengthened.
