Abstract

The development of Indonesia’s new capital city (IKN) in East Kalimantan is often promoted as a symbol of progress and equality; however, in reality, it generates significant marginalization. This project not only neglects the voices of local communities but also shifts their role from being subjects of development to mere objects of it. This research aims to critically explore the forms of social alienation experienced by local communities as a result of exploitative development policies. Using a qualitative approach with a phenomenological method, data were collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and field documentation. The findings reveal that the Paser Balik community experiences four dimensions of alienation as described by Karl Marx: alienation from the product of labor (loss of control over land and resources), alienation from the labor process (displacement of traditional economic practices), alienation from the self (disconnection from identity and spiritual ties to ancestral land), and alienation from the social environment. The analysis demonstrates that IKN development is non-inclusive, marginalizing communities from their land, work, identity, and social environment. This study offers a novel critical understanding of how IKN development generates processes of alienation for local communities, and its implications for their identity, roles, and empowerment within the context of social change and modernization. Further research could explore more deeply the role of the state and development institutions in either reinforcing or weakening the position of local communities in strategic projects, as well as examine alternative development models grounded in participation and social justice.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Modernization of development has become the development goal of the Kotabaru district government through the construction of a modern football stadium. This article aims to explore and analyze the potential social, economic, and public acceptance impacts of constructing a football stadium in Kotabaru Regency. To address this problem, a literature analysis and field data were employed. The data were collected through observation and in-depth interviews and analyzed qualitatively. This study concludes that the presence of a football stadium in the new city district has a social impact as a public space. The economic impact is the creation of formal and informal sector jobs, driving economic growth and local revenue. The construction of a football stadium has the potential to generate conflict, particularly regarding land acquisition, unequal distribution of economic benefits, and conflict between football fans. Active community participation as a form of positive acceptance in both the planning and management processes can reduce the potential for conflict, strengthen transparency, and increase social legitimacy for the construction of a football stadium.

Abstract

The phenomenon of environmental degradation in Satui Barat Village is closely linked to the exploitation of natural resources that prioritizes greater profits without considering ecological sustainability. This study aims to examine the manifestation of anthropocentrism in the management of natural resources in Satui Barat Village. The research employs a qualitative approach with a case study methodology. Data collection techniques include observation, interviews, and documentation. The findings indicate that the mindset of the Satui Barat community regarding natural resource management has been influenced by five characteristics of anthropocentrism. Anthropocentrism is a perspective that places humans at the center of everything, prioritizing human interests over environmental concerns. In the context of Satui Barat Village, economic activities, urbanization, and climate change also contribute to the well-being of the local community. Ideally, efforts to sustain human life should be balanced with sustainable environmental management, taking into account the long-term interests of both humans and nature. Anthropocentrism represents an ethical stance that neglects ecological balance and the sustainability of natural resources. In Satui Barat Village, mining activities have caused detrimental social impacts, such as forced evictions, land conflicts, and a decline in the quality of life for the local population. The current situation calls for changes in the governance of natural resources, placing greater emphasis on ecological sustainability to ensure a better and more sustainable quality of life. Coordinated efforts between the government, the mining industry, and local communities are essential to developing sustainable solutions that address the needs of all stakeholders, including environmental conservation. All sustainability efforts must be supported by a paradigm shift as a foundation, prioritizing environmental ethics that uphold quality and fairness for the entire ecosystem network.

Abstract

The environmental sustainability of Banjarmasin City as a whole is a responsibility that requires essential action by the Banjarmasin City Environmental Agency (DLH) through its programs. This research aims to: (1) Knowing the programs run by the Banjarmasin City Environmental Agency in environmental management. (2) Analyzing ecological thinking in environmental management programs by the Banjarmasin City Environmental Agency. This research uses a qualitative approach with a case study research type. Data collection techniques were carried out by direct observation, semi-structured interviews and documentation. This research shows that the programs of DLH Banjarmasin City actually do not have ecological thinking that includes the harmony of three important aspects in achieving appropriate development goals, namely ecological, economic, and social dimensions. The programs implemented do not substantially reflect holistic and sustainable ecological principles. The conclusion of the research is that the programs initiated by DLH Banjarmasin City tend to erode the values of natural science and sustainable development. In practice, the actions taken focus on aspects of economic development and short-term practical needs without considering the components of a sustainable ecosystem. As a result, despite efforts to improve the quality of the environment, the manifestation of solutions to environmental problems actually creates new environmental problems, such as the problem of traffic order in the surung sintak program due to the accumulation of garbage in TPS located on the edge of major roads, depriving part of the road to cause congestion, accidents, and disruption of community social activities. DLH can initiate training and continuing education programs for DLH Banjarmasin functionaries on ecology, conservation, and environmental sustainability concepts.

Abstract

The REDD+ programme aims to curb deforestation, with Berau Regency as one of the target areas with a commitment to implement the programme until 2030. The purpose of this research is to examine the environmental movement approach applied to the REDD+ programme and its impact on the sustainability of local livelihoods in Berau Regency. This research focuses on the REDD+ programme implemented by non-government organisations (NGOs), namely YKAN, PERISAI, Forclime, and SRP Payo-Payo. This research uses a qualitative method with a case study research approach. Data collection techniques used candid observation, semi-structured interviews and documentation. Data was analysed using an interactive model. The results show that the approach applied to the implementation of REDD+ programmes by non-government organisations (NGOs) in Berau Regency is a participatory approach, where the community acts as the main actor in every programme implementation. This approach is supported by the paradigm of the eco-populism environmental movement, which pays attention to aspects of local knowledge and the sources of life of local communities. The presence of the REDD+ programme does not disrupt livelihoods and does not change the culture of local communities, or integrate the objectives of the REDD+ programme with aspects that already exist in the community. The implication is that with the REDD+ programme, the community gets additional sources of livelihood without reducing the existing sources of livelihood that have been carried out for generations. Furthermore, the REDD+ programme is able to stimulate the community to abandon unsustainable practices. The REDD+ programme in Berau Regency should continue to be implemented by making local communities the main actors and adhering to local wisdom that exists in the community.

Abstract

Peatland degradation, particularly the increasing risks of fires and flooding due to climate change, necessitates transformative efforts by communities to sustain their livelihoods. This study aims to examine the social resilience of the community in Jambu Baru Village in terms of maintaining their climate-affected livelihoods. The research uses a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach. Data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The findings show that climate change significantly affects the livelihoods of the Jambu Baru Village community, which relies heavily on peatland resources. Resilience is demonstrated through adaptation based on local knowledge. The community's resilience is reflected in diversifying livelihood sources, where households are not dependent on a single income source. Each family typically engages in multiple livelihood activities, such as maiwak, manggau kayu galam, manetes uwey, mamuai banyir, beje management, and others. Furthermore, community resilience is supported by strengthened social solidarity. Resilience emerges from the integration of enhanced economic adaptation, utilization of social capital, and environmental conservation, which are key to sustainable livelihoods. The community also develops local wisdom to reduce the risks of fire and flood disasters. Academically, it is recommended to conduct comparative research on community resilience across different peatland communities to further explore the forms of resilience in the face of increasingly complex climate change impacts. Practically, it is advised that communities develop innovations to produce products with higher economic value.
