Abstract

Abstract. This research investigates the material needs of third-year students enrolled in two classes of Translation courses at Universitas Palangka Raya, aiming to inform the development of a comprehensive translation module. A total of 108 students participated in the study, providing valuable insights through a structured questionnaire designed to assess their specific requirements for translation materials. A qualitative approach using structured questionnaires was used, allowing for both thematic analysis of open-ended responses and percentage-based summaries of closed-ended items. This enabled an in-depth understanding of the students’ perspectives and learning needs. The findings revealed that the majority of students felt the current materials were adequate, but highlighted the need for a more structured and accessible module. Specifically, students expressed a desire for materials that bridge the gap between theory and practice, including more examples, practical exercises, and structured guidance across different types of texts, such as academic, commercial, and literary works. The results underscore the importance of developing a tailored translation module that not only covers the theoretical aspects of translation but also provides ample opportunities for students to apply their knowledge in practice. This study provides a foundational basis for enhancing the Translation courses at Universitas Palangka Raya, ensuring that the curriculum aligns more closely with the actual needs of students.Keywords: : translation, module, learning materials, EFL students, need analysis

Abstract

Background: Program pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini dilaksanakan untuk mengoptimalkan literasi digital guru melalui pengenalan konsep dan praktik Search Engine Optimization (SEO) dalam penulisan artikel promosi potensi daerah di Kalimantan Tengah. Kegiatan ini dilatarbelakangi oleh kebutuhan untuk memperkuat peran guru tidak hanya sebagai fasilitator pembelajaran di kelas, tetapi juga sebagai agen literasi digital yang mampu berkontribusi pada pembangunan daerah melalui karya tulis kreatif berbasis teknologi. Metode: Program dirancang dalam bentuk workshop yang terdiri atas pemaparan materi, diskusi, serta praktik langsung menulis artikel berbasis SEO dalam bahasa Inggris. Sebanyak 17 guru berpartisipasi aktif dalam kegiatan ini dan memberikan umpan balik melalui kuesioner. Hasil: Temuan menunjukkan bahwa mayoritas peserta menunjukkan persepsi positif terhadap aspek penyampaian materi (100%), kepuasan terhadap workshop (82%), alokasi waktu (94%), motivasi (94%) dan kepercayaan diri (100%). Selain itu, artikel peserta yang dipublikasi memiliki visibilitas yang cukup baik dengan 226 impresi dan pembaca dari mancanegara. Kesimpulan: Secara keseluruhan, program ini berhasil meningkatkan pemahaman dan keterampilan guru dalam penulisan artikel berbasis SEO sekaligus menumbuhkan motivasi mereka sebagai agen literasi digital. Di masa mendatang, kegiatan serupa perlu menyediakan waktu lebih panjang dan pendampingan berkelanjutan agar dampaknya lebih optimal.

Abstract

Translation of Culture-Specific Items (CSIs) in audiovisual media plays a crucial role in supporting cross-cultural understanding and preserving cultural meaning. However, previous studies have predominantly focused on translation strategies, with limited attention to how translated CSIs contribute to cultural understanding among global audiences, as evaluated through the extent to which the translations preserve referential meaning, retain cultural nuances, and remain comprehensible to target viewers. This study aims to analyze the translation of CSIs in the Indonesian horror film KKN di Desa Penari by applying Newmark’s (2010) CSI categories and Aixelá’s (1996) translation strategy framework. This research employs a qualitative descriptive case study design. The data were collected from movie dialogues and their English subtitles using observation and note-taking techniques. The analysis identified 41 CSIs classified into six categories, with social life and private passions emerging as the most dominant. The findings also reveal that while many translations successfully preserve referential meaning, some cultural nuances are reduced in the process. This study contributes to audiovisual translation research by highlighting the role of CSI translation not only as a linguistic process but also as a mediator of cultural understanding. It shows that although translation enables international audiences to access Indonesian cultural elements, certain layers of cultural depth may not be fully conveyed.
