Abstract

This study aims to calculate the Total Economic Value (TEV) of the polluted mangrove ecosystem in Bandar Bakau Dumai, Riau Province. Mangrove ecosystems provide important ecological and economic services but face serious threats from pollution from industrial activities, domestic waste, and plastic waste. This study uses the Total Economic Value approach, which includes Direct Use Value (DUV), Indirect Use Value (IUV), and Opportunity Value (OV). Data was collected through surveys, interviews with 14 respondents, and secondary data analysis. The results show that the TEV of the mangrove ecosystem is IDR 468,960,000/year, or approximately IDR 15,128,387/ha/year. The DUV component of IDR 147,700,000 is derived from the utilization of shrimp, kedabu fruit juice, and nyirih leaves. The IUV of IDR 320,000,000 reflects services for coastal protection and the provision of marine biota habitat. Meanwhile, the OV of IDR 1,260,000 indicates the community's willingness to pay for conservation. This value confirms that, despite pollution, mangrove ecosystems continue to provide significant economic benefits and should be prioritized in conservation and sustainable management policies.

Abstract

This study analyzes readiness to adopt capture fisheries technology innovations as a basis for strengthening the resilience of small-scale fishers at Dumai Fishing Port. Technology readiness was assessed through three dimensions: fishing gear modernization, use of weather information systems, and digital marketing of fishery products. A survey method with qualitative and quantitative descriptive approaches was employed. Data were collected using a Likert-scale questionnaire administered to 20 fishers operating push nets (sondong), tidal traps (belat; gombang), and gillnets. The results showed that overall technology adoption readiness was moderate, with an average total score of 60.6. The weather information system dimension recorded the highest score (22.55), followed by fishing gear modernization (21.4), while digital marketing was the weakest dimension (16.65). These findings indicate that fishers recognize the benefits of technology for improving operational efficiency, safety at sea, market access, and competitiveness. However, adoption remains constrained by limited capital, technical knowledge, digital literacy, infrastructure, and institutional support. Technology adoption readiness can therefore serve as an entry point for strengthening fishers’ adaptive capacity and livelihood resilience. Affordable financing, practical training, improved digital and weather literacy, infrastructure development, and sustained institutional assistance are needed to support inclusive and locally appropriate technological transformation in coastal communities.

Abstract

Pandan Beach is a popular tourist destination in Central Tapanuli Regency. The number of tourists in 2018 was 184,355; in 2019, it decreased to 114,925; in 2020, it decreased to 90,240; in 2021, it increased to 123,905; and in 2022, it decreased to 63,191. This research was conducted at Pandan Beach, Central Tapanuli Regency, North Sumatra Province, in May 2023. This study aims to determine the current conditions and management strategies for Pandan Beach. The method used in this research is the survey method. The sample in this study amounted to 100 respondents. In this study, informants included 3 managers from Pandan Beach, Bappeda, and the Tourism Office, a Village Head, and 2 community leaders. The data obtained were analyzed using descriptive and SWOT analyses. The results of this study indicated that the appropriate management strategy for Pandan Beach is the SO (Strengths-Opportunities) strategy. Utilizing the natural beauty of Pandan Beach to attract tourists to visit, improving the quality and quantity of existing facilities such as toilets, prayer rooms, and others, utilizing government support to support the management of Pandan Beach attractions, involving surrounding communities, such as fishermen, to increase income and increase fishermen's income through boat rental and photo both.

Abstract

Buruk Bakul Village is a coastal area with significant mangrove ecosystem potential that plays an important role in supporting local livelihoods. However, mangroves in this area are under pressure due to human activities and natural factors. This study aims to analyze the role of Forest Farmer Groups (KTH) in mangrove management and identify the positions of the stakeholders involved. The research employed a survey method with a qualitative approach. Data were collected through observation, interviews, questionnaires, and documentation, while respondents were selected using purposive sampling. Data analysis was conducted descriptively and supported by a power– interest approach to map stakeholder influence and interest. The results show that the KTH Sekat Bakau has a high level of interest and a strong influence, placing it in the key players category. KTH plays a major role in mangrove management activities, including planting, maintenance, rehabilitation, and monitoring. Other stakeholders such as the village government, NGOs, fisheries technical units, and community leaders also contribute according to their respective roles. KTH plays a crucial role in mangrove management in Buruk Bakul Village and requires stakeholder collaboration to ensure effective management.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the pattern of patron-client relationships between senangin (Eleutheronema tetradactylum) fishermen and tauke (capital owners) in Rokan Hilir Regency, Riau Province, Indonesia. The research employed a qualitative approach using primary data obtained through direct interviews with fishermen, tauke, and related stakeholders, and secondary data collected from government institutions and statistical reports. The findings reveal that fishermen depend heavily on tauke due to limited capital and restricted market access. Tauke provides fishing facilities, such as operational costs, boats, and fishing gear, while fishermen are bound to sell their catches exclusively to the tauke. This relationship includes both economic aspects (capital support and profit-sharing system, with 75% of catches going to fishermen and 25% to tauke) and non-economic aspects (loans during lean seasons, assistance in emergencies, trust, and loyalty). The study concludes that the patron-client relationship forms a reciprocal yet asymmetric dependency, where fishermen gain access to capital and markets, while tauke maintains control over fish pricing and distribution. Institutional strengthening and alternative financial mechanisms are recommended to reduce fishermen’s dependency and promote sustainable fisheries management.
