Abstract

Hadith in Islamic law is the second source after the Qur'an, so important is the position of the hadith so that the hadith also serves as al-Bayan to the law contained in the Qur'an. The textual understanding of classical hadith resulted in the law that was born at that time irrelevant to today's era. To get a correct understanding of the hadiths, the scholars understand the hadiths so that they can answer the challenges of the times. Textual understanding of hadith is not sufficient and irrelevant, so understanding hadith must be contextualized, namely by using social science, anthropology, history and culture. One of the Indonesian hadith scholars M. Syuhudi Ismail, as in his book Textual and Contextual Hadith of the Prophet: A Study of Ma'ani al-Hadith on Universal, Temporal and Local Islamic Teachings. M. Syuhudi Ismail in his book gives an offer in understanding the content of the hadith, namely looking at the shape of the eyes of the hadith and its scope, looking at the background, looking at the content of the hadith, and seeing the clues of hadith that are contradictory. So by looking at these factors then the hadith will be able to answer all the problems that occur in this contemporary era.

Abstract

Abstract

This article examines the kalam insya' in Surah Al-'Alaq by emphasizing the function of the implicit demands contained in the command (amr) and rhetorical istifham. So far, studies of Surah Al-'Alaq have generally focused only on verses 1-5 as the first revelation revealed to the Prophet Muhammad, while the subsequent verses have not been widely analyzed in terms of balaghah, especially within the framework of kalam insya' thalabi. This study uses a qualitative-descriptive method with a balaghah analysis approach through the perspective of ma'ani science, by examining the linguistic structure of the verses of Surah Al-'Alaq and the rhetorical meanings they contain. The results of the study show that Surah Al-'Alaq does not only contain explicit demands such as the command iqra', but also implicit demands conveyed through rhetorical istifham, especially in verses 9-19. This form of istifham is not included to obtain a literal answer, but rather functions as an invitation to reflection, a moral critique of arrogance and rejection of guidance, and an affirmation of theological awareness of God's supervision. This study concludes that the kalam insya' thalabi in Surah Al-'Alaq serves as an effective Quranic rhetorical instrument in establishing continuity between the initial message of revelation and moral demands, while simultaneously strengthening the persuasive and dialogical character of the Quran.

Abstract

This article departs from the epistemological problem in hadith studies, which positions takhrīj al-Ḥadīṡ primarily as a normative verification technique to determine the quality of narrations, thereby tending to overlook the dimensions of power relations, the production of authority, and the discursive dynamics at work in the history of hadith transmission. This approach limits the takhrīj’s ability to read the sanad selection process as a socio-intellectual practice laden with interests and scholarly hierarchies. This study aims to reconstruct takhrīj al-Ḥadīṡ as a tool of discourse criticism that enables the disclosure of authority bias in the formation of the hadith canon. The study uses a qualitative method based on literature studies with a critical discourse analysis approach to takhrīj texts, works of rijāl al-Ḥadīṡ, and the dominant sanad assessment practices in the classical tradition. The results of this study indicate that takhrīj operates as a non-neutral discursive practice, as it systematically reproduces certain authorities through hierarchies of narrators, privileging dominant transmission networks, and mechanisms of exclusion against narrations originating from marginalized or outside-the-mainstream figures. The analysis also reveals that the criteria for authenticity are not merely technical, but are articulated in the configuration of scholarly discourse that affirms the legitimacy of certain groups while limiting the possibility of alternative interpretations. The implications of this study emphasize the need to reposition takhrīj al-Ḥadīṡ in contemporary hadith studies as a critical-analytical tool capable of reading hadith not only as normative texts, but also as products of power relations and constructions of historical authority, thus opening up a more reflective and contextual reading space.

Abstract

This article departs from the methodological problems in contemporary hadith studies that tend to reduce takhrīj al-Ḥadīṡ as a technical-verification procedure to assess the validity of the sanad, while ignoring the historical, discursive, and social dimensions of the hadith transmission process. This reduction causes analytical limitations in understanding hadith as a product of knowledge transmission that occurs in a specific spatial and temporal context. This study aims to reconstruct takhrīj al-Ḥadīṡ as an integrative historical analysis method by combining sanad criticism, matn criticism, and analysis of the social context of transmission within a single integrated methodological framework. This study uses a qualitative method with a historical-critical approach through a review of classical and contemporary hadith literature, a comparative analysis of transmission routes, and an examination of the relationship between hadith texts, narrators, and the socio-intellectual conditions that underlie them. The results of this study indicate that the integration of sanad criticism, matn criticism, and social context allows analysis of the reading of hadith not only as a static normative text, but as a dynamic historical process, reflecting the interaction between the authority of the narrators, social structures, and the epistemic needs of the early Muslim community. This approach reveals variations in redaction, shifts in meaning, and social rationalities that influence the selection and transmission of hadith. Theoretically, this study has implications for the development of contemporary hadith study methodology by expanding the function of takhrīj al-Ḥadīṡ from a verification tool to an instrument of historical analysis capable of bridging the classical critical tradition with modern scientific approaches.

Abstract

The study of takhrīj hadith has so far been dominated by a normative approach that positions the assessment of rijāl primarily as a reproduction of classical authority, so that the process of verifying narrator and sanad data often lacks a systematic, transparent, and methodologically traceable evaluation mechanism. This condition has implications for the limited consistency and replicability of hadith assessment in the context of contemporary hadith studies that demand higher scientific accountability. This study aims to reconstruct the methodology of takhrīj based on rijāl through the integration of the principles of jarḥ wa al-Taʻdīl with an evidence-based approach, so that the assessment of narrators and sanad is not only based on normative authority, but also on structured data management and verification. The study uses a qualitative-analytical approach with a critical analysis of rijāl literature, works of jarḥ wa al-Taʻdīl, and the scientific evidence framework that has developed in the modern research tradition. The results of this study indicate the formation of a takhrīj methodological framework that places rijāl data as the primary basis of analysis through the stages of source inventory, cross-verification of narrator information, assessment of the evidential weight of jarḥ and taʻdīl, and consistent synthesis of findings in the evaluation of sanad. This framework allows for a more structured, transparent, and consistent hadith assessment process, while minimizing subjectivity and fragmentation of assessment. The implications of this research lie in strengthening the validity and reliability of hadith assessment, as well as its contribution to developing a takhrīj methodology that is adaptive to the demands of contemporary hadith studies without abandoning the foundations of classical scholarship.

Abstract

This article reassesses the claim of objectivity of takhrīj al-Ḥadīṡ, which has long been positioned as a scientific and neutral methodological procedure in the discipline of ʻulūm al-Ḥadīṡ, by highlighting the problem of ideological bias inherent in its historical and epistemological practices. The research background departs from the dominant assumption that takhrīj functions solely as a value-free sanad and matan verification technique, while several textual indications and scientific practices point to the intervention of mażhab preferences, the hierarchy of narrators’ authority, and the construction of orthodoxy that influence the results of hadith assessments. This study aims to critically evaluate the methodological objectivity of takhrīj al-Ḥadīṡ by examining the epistemic consistency between the claim of scientific procedures and their operational reality in classical hadith literature and contemporary discourse. This study employs a qualitative-critical approach with an epistemological analysis of representative takhrīj works, the rijāl al-Ḥadīṡ, and modern methodological studies, through comparative reading and critical discourse analysis. The results demonstrate a structural tension between technical procedures claimed to be objective—such as assessing the fairness and reliability of narrators—and ideological influences operating through source selection, establishing credibility standards, and legitimizing certain scholarly authorities. These findings indicate that the objectivity of takhrīj is historically and discursively framed, not absolute, thus demanding a more reflective methodological reformulation. The theoretical implications of this study lie in strengthening the critical paradigm in hadith studies, by encouraging the integration of epistemological analysis and ideological criticism to broaden the horizon of a more transparent and accountable hadith methodology.

Abstract

The development of information technology has driven a significant shift in the practice of hadith retrieval, from manual searches based on classical texts to the use of digital hadith databases that offer speed, accessibility, and ease of search. This shift, while providing methodological efficiency, raises complex epistemological issues, particularly regarding the validity of knowledge, scholarly authority, and the relationship between classical hadith methods and computational logic. This study aims to critically analyze the use of digital hadith databases in the process of narration verification, highlighting the accompanying epistemological implications. The study uses a qualitative-analytical method through an epistemological approach, supported by a review of classical and contemporary literature, as well as a critical analysis of a number of digital hadith platforms widely used in hadith studies. The results of the study indicate a shift in scientific authority from the individual competence of muḥaddith to technological authority that relies on data structures and algorithm design, the limitations of search algorithms in representing the complexity of sanad and matn, the fragmentation of the scientific context of hadith due to the separation of narration from its historical and methodological framework, and the fundamental tension between the evaluative-qualitative epistemology of ʻulūm al-Ḥadīs and the quantitative and reductionist digital logic. These findings confirm that digital hadith databases cannot yet replace the critical function of classical methodology, but rather act as supporting instruments that require a strict epistemological framework. Academically, this study has implications for the need to develop an integrative takhrīj model that synergizes traditional scientific authority with digital technology critically and reflectively in the digital era.
