Abstract

In mastering vocabulary, language learners often face some challenges, one of which is the occurrences of multiword-lexis and non-literal uses that consist of polysemy, collocation, phrasal verb, idiom, metaphor, and metonymy. This paper will then analyse multiword-lexis and non-literal uses found in a newspaper, the Guardian. Descriptive qualitative research design was employed in this research. The findings showed that there are two (2) occurrences of polysemy, fifteen (15) occurrences of collocation, nine (9) occurrences of phrasal verb, three (3) occurrences of idiom, two (2) occurrences of metaphor, and two (2) occurrences of metonymy with the total thirty three (39) occurrences. The occurrences of non-literal meaning can be grouped into idiom, metaphor, and metonymy.

Abstract

This study focuses on the representation of ecocriticism in the children's novel entitled “Mata dan Manusia Laut” by Okky Madasari. Ecocriticism is an approach that explains the relationship between literature and environmental issues. The purpose of this study is to reveal how this novel represents the values for preserving the environment, which the children imitate through the behavior of the Bajo tribe in Wakatobi. By using descriptive qualitative methods and ecocriticism approaches, the results of this study are the values of character education in children that are represented through the mythology of the Bajo tribe such as the belief in the God of the Sea and Queen Octopus as the Guardian of the Sea. This is believed as an effort to preserve the sea. In addition, this novel criticizes human behavior that destroys nature, such as fishing using bombs, polluting the sea with a lot of garbage, and killing living things that protect the marine ecosystem. Thus, besides as the representation of the beauty and natural wealth of Wakatobi, this novel is also an effort to instill the values ??in children that Indonesia's marine wealth with all its potential must be kept in balance.

Abstract

Trenggalek is one of the regencies in East Java that is intensively developing tourist villages. By 2022, 35 tourist villages have been successfully built. With the existence of tourist villages with various potentials, supporting factors are needed from not only the government but also the wider community, one of which is the participation of the community as tour guides. A tour guide must master various abilities; communication skills, language skills, and the ability to know a lot about tourist attractions. One of the vital things that must be mastered by a tour guide is the ability to speak and write English as an international language. A tour guide is expected to be able to use English well, fluently, and effectively in carrying out his duties to guide tourists who come. That is why it is necessary to map the level of English proficiency of the tour guides in tourist villages. Thus, this study focused on analyzing the English levels of tour guides in two skills; speaking and writing. The result revealed that tour guides in Trenggalek have a varied range of English speaking and writing levels, from basic to intermediate. It is hoped that later with the mapping of the English level of the tour guides, English teachers and researchers in similar fields will be able to better prepare teaching materials and training programs that are suitable to the needs of the tour guides

Abstract

East Java has some famous and potential tourist places, one of which is in Trenggalek. Trenggalek is rich in natural resources such as beaches, mountains, and forests to name a few. Therefore, Trenggalek claimed to have big potential in East Java tourism in 2022. In 2021, the government of Trenggalek already set the target to build and develop 100 tourist villages by 2024. In 2022, 35 tourist villages have been built all around Trenggalek. Skilled tour guides are strongly required to promote Trenggalek as a promising and potential tourism destination in East Java. These tour guides have to master and comprehend English as an international language. Tour guides who can use and speak English well can gain more foreign tourists and make Trenggalek not only famous in East Java and Indonesia but also in wider scopes. Therefore, a PIKAT team of UPN “Veteran” Jawa Timur held a community service program, “English for Tour Guide” in Dongko, Trenggalek, East Java. The team has run this program since July; split into two sessions; offline and online session. The offline session was held in July, at Taman Watu Kandang, Pandean, Dongko, and Trenggalek, and continued with an online session in August via Zoom. Both the offline and online programs were successfully held. The participants joined the program enthusiastically and actively. This community service was supported by the Department of Tourism and Culture of Trenggalek. In the future, the team expects to widen the scope of this community service program.

The purpose of this service was to develop public speaking and personal branding skills for student organization managers at SMA Dharma Wanita Surabaya through the PIKAT scheme. The training is divided into two; offline and online. The training program is carried out by carrying out counseling on public speaking and personal branding based on theories in communication. The second activity is to train public speaking and personal branding where the participants can practice their public speaking skills. Monitoring after mentoring and training activities is still carried out. At the end of the program, there are four outputs/recommendations, training modules, activity news, and community service journals. It can be concluded that this activity encourages the development of public speaking and personal branding skills for student organization managers at SMA Dharma Wanita Surabaya.

Abstract

Algorithm selection is the main key in producing a system, especially an artificial intelligence-based system, for example, a course scheduling system that involves many constraints in producing an optimal schedule. This research develops a scheduling system using the ICWFPSO algorithm which is a development from previous research, namely the development of a scheduling system using the MIPSO algorithm. The use of inertia weight in the MIPSO algorithm which is used as a scheduling algorithm in previous research can be optimized by using a combination of inertia weight and constriction factor. Scheduling system development is carried out using the waterfall method with research steps namely problem and needs analysis, data collection and literature study, system design, system implementation, and ends with testing the performance of the algorithms that are applied to the scheduling system that is built. Based on the tests carried out, it can be concluded that the ICWFPSO algorithm provides 2 times better performance compared to the MIPSO algorithm in terms of optimal schedule generation time. Meanwhile, tests carried out on CPU and RAM usage showed that there was no significant impact on these two parameters through the implementation of MIPSO and ICWFPSO in the course scheduling system created. Keywords: best scheduling, ICWFPSO, number of iterations

Abstract

Trenggalek has more than 30 tourist villages that have been intensively built since 2020, including Desa Wisata Jajar Gumregah. This village was chosen as one of the 300 best tourism villages in Anugerah Desa Wisata (ADWI) 2023. This year, one of the tourist villages proposed by the Trenggalek government was Desa Wisata Jajar Gumregah. This tourist village has much potential for development, including cultural tourism. Cultural tourism in this tourist village can be developed into storynomics tourism. To develop storynomics tourism in Desa Wisata Jajar Gumregah, the community service team from UPN “Veteran” Jawa Timur then initiated and held a program called “Storytelling for Tour Guide” in Desa Wisata Jajar Gumregah, Trenggalek. The program was successfully held on the 25th – 26th of June 2023 at Pendopo Desa Wisata Jajar Gumregah, attended by around 35 participants. They came from diverse backgrounds, from senior high school to undergraduate level. The success was proven by the participation and involvement of the participants in the discussion sessions and the publications made. In the future, the improvement of the storytelling skills of tour guides can boost the tourism sector in the area.
