Abstract

Background: Gingivitis is an inflammatory reaction that occurs in gingival tissue. Based on 2018 RISKESDAS data, gingivitis case that occurs in Indonesia reaches 13,9%. The prevalence of gingivitis in South Kalimantan is higher than Indonesia’s, that is 14,2%. The bad habit of mantaining oral health causes plaque accumulation on the marginal gingiva, which resulting in gingivitis. The said condition also affects disabled people, one of which is blind people. Tooth brushing intervention can be done in various kind. One of the recommended methods is the roll technique that effectively cleans plaque and can mantain gum health. Purpose: To analyze the effectiveness of the roll tooth-brushing technique toward the gingival health status (gingival index) of totally blind people. Methods: This research used quasi-experimental research method with non-equivalent control group design. The sampling technique was using purposive sampling with total samples were 15 people. This research was conducted in 21 days with 9 times encounter. The time span of each encounter is once in every 2 days. Gingival index examination used gingival index. The data analysis in this research was using Mann Whitney Test. Result: The Mann Whitney test result shows that p-value is 0,018, which is smaller than the alpha value that is 0,05 (p<0,05) which means that there is a difference between the case group that was given with socialization and roll brushing technique and the control group that was not given the said socialization and treatment. Conclusion: The roll tooth-brushing technique is effective for gingival health status (gingival index) of totally blind people.

Abstract

Background: Intellectually disabled (ID) children refer to special needs children whose intelligences are below the average. Poor dental and oral health conditions are a problem that is often found in ID children. Dental health education (DHE) on toothbrushing activity for ID children can be a solution for their dental and oral health problems, however ID children have limitation in receiving information caused by the deficit of cognitive functions covering perception, memory, idea development, evaluation, and reasoning. Effective learning processes in DHE for ID children can be achieved by using adaptive media like music adjusted to the condition of ID children. Objective: To analyze the effect of DHE using music in decreasing plaque index of mild-to-moderate ID children. Methods: Pre-experimental (one-group pre and posttest) and total sampling method were used. Thirty subjects, junior high school students with mild-to-moderate intellectual disability (9 females and 21 males), were given 15 sessions of DHE using music as adaptive media. The music was in the form of children's song, which contains stages of tooth-brushing using modified-bass technique, created specifically by adjusting to characteristics of ID children. Plaque index was measured using Quigley–Hein Turesky–Gilmore–Glickman modification on day-0, 3, 6, 9, 12, and 15. Results: Average plaque index of all subjects (mean±SD): pretest (4.79±0.27), posttest-1 (4.37±0.36), posttest-2 (4.02±0.42), posttest-3 (3.39±0.46), posttest-4 (2.78±0.65), posttest-5 (2.29±0.86), Wilcoxon statistical analysis showed that there are significant differences (p<0,05). Conclusion: DHE using music as adaptive media in the form of children's songs can affect the reduction in plaque index of mild-to-moderate ID children since the 3rd day. The decrease in male subjects' plaque index was slower than in female subjects. Grade level does not affect the decrease in plaque index of ID children. Lingual surface’s plaque index had higher score with slower decline than buccal surface.

Abstract

ABSTRACTBackground: Dental and oral hygiene of children in Indonesia is so alarming that serious awareness and attention are needed. Poor dental and oral hygiene is characterized by the presence of plaque deposits on tooth surface, forming an intercellular matrix that may instigate various dental and mouth problems. The prevalence of correct tooth brushing in Indonesia was very low at only 2.80%, in which South Kalimantan Province was 4.97% and Barito Kuala Regency was 3.55%. Objective: To determine the effectiveness of using soft and medium toothbrush bristles with fone’s technique to reduce plaque in students aged 10-11 years at SDN Berangas Timur 1, Barito Kuala Regency. Methods: The study used a true experimental method with a pretest-posttest with control group design consisting of pre-test and 8 post-test, and control group that was not given any treatment. Samples were randomly allocated by name sequence through simple random sampling technique of students aged 10-11 years at SDN Berangas Timur 1, Barito Kuala Regency. Inspection using PHPM plaque index was assessed on 6 index teeth. Research data were analysed using Mann Whitney's post hoc Friedman test. Results: The results for Friedman test in the treatment group showed p = 0.000. Mann Whitney test results in the treatment group with the control group showed p = 0.000 with a comparison of mean difference of 1.29 and 1.22 between the use of soft and medium toothbrush bristles with fone's technique. Conclusion: The use of soft toothbrush bristles with fone’s technique is the most effective in plaque reduction.
