Abstract

Abstract

Spirulina platensis is a microalgae that can grow in waste media, including Sugar Mill Effluent (SME). In addition, Spirulina contains phytohormones that can be utilized to enhance seed germination. Cultivating microalgae will produce biomass that can be used for priming cucumber seeds. This research aims to determine the effect of Spirulina biomass and soaking time on the germination of cucumber seeds. In this research, a factorial Completely Randomized Design (CRD) was used, consisting of 5 levels of microalgae biomass concentration: control (untreated seeds), 0, 30, 45, and 60%, with soaking time of 3 levels: 1, 2, and 3 hours. The results demonstrated that Spirulina can grow in SME-based media, as indicated by the increase in size and density of microalgae cells.  Analysis of the seed priming test results of 45% algae biomass concentration for 1 and 3 hours showed a significant effect on the parameter of vigor index, seed growth rate, and simultaneous seed growth. In the treatment with a 60% concentration and soaking time of 1, 2, and 3 hours, significant effects were observed on the parameters of MGT, vigor index, seed growth rate, and shoot length. Even though the 45% and 60% treatments showed no significant differences in the few parameters, the priming with Spirulina platensis exhibited no decrease in cucumber seed germination, these applications indicated no decrease in seed germination. This demonstrates that priming treatment with Spirulina platensis is not toxic to seedling growth.

Abstract

Horticultural production in East Java continues to increase each year, particularly in strategic commodities such as chili, shallots, and watermelon. Jember Regency, especially the Mayang District, has become a major center of watermelon production with high productivity. Seputih Village, located in the Mayang District, holds significant potential for horticultural cultivation; however, this potential has not been fully utilized, particularly in the processing of waste from seed production such as the flesh of watermelon and chili, which has so far been discarded. This community service activity aimed to increase the economic value of watermelon waste through training in processing it into value-added food products, namely Nata de Cucu. The program was carried out from October to November 2024 in Seputih Village, involving the State Polytechnic of Jember, five students, the Mayang Jaya Farmers Group, and the local community. The implementation method included several stages: preparation, collection of previous research results, program socialization, technology dissemination through training, and monitoring and evaluation. A training module was developed to assist participants in processing watermelon waste independently, even after the program ends. The results of the activity showed a high level of enthusiasm from the partners, especially from the women farmer group. After the training, there was an 80% increase in the knowledge and skills of the farmers in processing watermelon waste into Nata de Cucu, which was then packaged and labeled. The conclusion of this program indicates a positive response and success in adding economic value to agricultural waste. Further action is needed to expand the utilization of watermelon waste not only as a food product but also as a potential source of renewable energy, considering the large volume of waste produced.

Abstract

Mung bean is highly important legume crop in Indonesia. Attempts to improve the yield and quality of mung bean seeds can be done through improving the planting media by adding organic fertilizer. The objective of this study was to determine the response of growth and seeds production of mung bean due to chicken manure and banana hump organic fertilizer. The research was performed in the greenhouse at the Balai Pengujian Standar Instrumen Tanaman Aneka Kacang (BSIPTAKA), Muneng Probolinggo. This study was structured in a factorial block design with three replications executed randomly. The first factor was doses of CM consisting of 0, 8.3, 16.7, and 25 ton/ha. The second factor was concentrations of banana hump liquid organic fertilizer (LOF) consisting of 0, 10, 20, and 30 ml/L. The result showed that doses of CM had a significant effect on plant height at 10 DAP, seed weight per plant, and seed yield. The interaction between CM doses and banana hump LOF was able to increase leaf chlorophyll index at 30 DAP. Combination of 16.7 ton/ha CM and 20 ml/L banana hump LOF produced the highest average chlorophyll index of 55.07 CCI. Keywords: Chlorophyll index, Manure, Mung bean, Organic fertilizer, Seed.

Abstract

Applying environmentally friendly technology in melon cultivation aims to create sustainable agriculture. Nutrient and plant growth regulators management are simple to apply and have a relatively rapid effect on melon fruit production. Water footprint assessment in melon cultivation is crucial for ensuring sustainable agricultural practices and efficient water use. This study aimed to evaluate the electroconductivity of nutrient solutions and GA3 concentration in increasing fruit production and water footprint efficiency. This research was conducted from June to September 2022 at Tefa SGH Polije. This research used a completely randomized design with treatments that consisted of nine combinations of nutrient solution electrical conductivities (2.8, 3.2, and 3.6 mS cm-1) and GA3 concentrations (0, 60, and 120 mg L-1). Observation variables were fruit diameter, edible part thickness, fruit sweetness level, fruit weight, and water footprint. Data were analyzed using ANOVA and DMRT. Applying 2.8 mS cm-1 nutrient solution (NS) + 60 mg L-1 GA3 was the best treatment according to fruit diameter, edible part thickness, and fruit sweetness level. Although statistically, it had no significant effect, 2.8 mS cm-1 NS + 60 mg L-1 GA3 increased fruit weight by 18.75% and water footprint efficiency by 15.48% compared to control. Abstract

Abstract

Eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) is an important horticultural crop in tropical and subtropical regions. However, suboptimal seed germination and poor early seedling growth often impede successful crop establishment. Seed priming with potassium nitrate (KNO₃) is widely recognized for enhancing seed performance, but prolonged soaking in priming solutions can limit oxygen availability during imbibition, potentially inhibiting metabolic activity and reducing priming efficiency. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of aerated KNO₃ priming in improving germination and seedling vigor of eggplant. A completely randomized design with seven treatments, including control, KNO₃ concentrations (0%, 1%, 2%), and priming conditions (with and without aeration), was applied. Results showed that seed priming significantly improved germination parameters, stem diameter, and dry mass. The best germination performance was observed in seeds primed with 2% KNO₃ under aeration with 88.50% germination, the highest germination rate index (23.08), and the shortest mean germination time (3.38 days). While priming did not significantly affect plant height at 35 days after planting, and the concentration of KNO₃ did not significantly affect the seedling performances, aeration significantly increased stem diameter and seedling dry mass. These findings suggest that aerated priming with 2% KNO₃ can be recommended as an effective technique to enhance germination performance and seedling vigor in eggplant.
