Abstract

This activity aims to analyze the effectiveness of eco-enzyme production training as an effort to manage organic waste at SMA Negeri 1 Sei Rampah, as well as to evaluate the improvement of participants' knowledge and skills in utilizing organic waste into environmentally friendly value-added products. The activity method employed active learning through socialization, demonstration, and hands-on practice (learning by doing) conducted over 7 hours involving 30 participants consisting of 15 teachers and 15 students. The activity was carried out in four main stages: socialization on organic waste management and eco-enzyme benefits, demonstration of eco-enzyme production with a material ratio of 1:3:10 (brown sugar: organic waste: water), hands-on practice of eco-enzyme production by 6 participant groups, and evaluation using pre-test and post-test. The results showed a significant improvement in participants' understanding with an average increase of 60%, where the highest improvement was observed in eco-enzyme production skills reaching 66.6%. Participant satisfaction reached 92.6% in good to excellent categories, and all groups successfully produced eco-enzyme with good quality (average score of 3.4 out of 4.0) totaling 12 liters. The conclusion of this activity is that eco-enzyme production training proved effective in enhancing knowledge and skills in organic waste management, building environmental awareness, and has the potential to become a sustainable program that can be replicated in other schools to support zero waste movements based on school communities.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effect of implementing the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model with the aid of Wordwall media on students' critical thinking skills in the topic of environmental change. The method used was a quasi-experimental design with a Pretest–Posttest Control Group Design at Panca Budi Private High School, Medan. The study population included all 10th-grade students, with the sample selected using cluster random sampling. The research instrument was a critical thinking essay test referring to the six Facione indicators: interpretation, analysis, evaluation, inference, explanation, and self-regulation. Data were analyzed using an Independent Sample t-test after undergoing prerequisite tests for normality and homogeneity. The results showed that the average posttest score of the experimental class (79.62) was higher than that of the control class (73.95). The hypothesis test yielded a significance value of 0.002 (p < 0.05), indicating that the integration of the PBL model with Wordwall media significantly improved students' critical thinking skills. The integration of interactive media in problem-based learning has been shown to create a more active, contextual, and effective learning experience in supporting the development of students' higher-order thinking skills in Biology.

Abstract

Abstract Literacy and numeracy skills are essential for individuals to reach their full potential, lead meaningful and productive lives, and participate fully in society. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) in enhancing the literacy and numeracy skills of primary school students in Medan, Indonesia. Employing a quasi-experimental design, the study involved 37 students in the experimental group (PBL) and 35 students in the control group (conventional learning). Data were collected through prior knowledge (PK) tests, as well as literacy and numeracy assessments, and analyzed using two-way ANOVA. The results revealed that the experimental group showed significantly greater improvement, with N-Gain scores for literacy (0.449) and numeracy (0.439) exceeding those of the control group (0.268 and 0.236, respectively). Additionally, prior knowledge had a significant effect on numeracy outcomes, but not on literacy. The study recommends integrating PBL into the curriculum to enhance student skills and encourages further research on motivational and sociocultural factors. PBL is demonstrated to be an innovative and relevant approach for improving the quality of education in Indonesia.
