Abstract

Adolescents worldwide are facing an alarming convergence of four lifestyle-related behavioural risks (physical inactivity, sedentary behaviour, poor sleep, and unhealthy diet) that threaten their current and future wellbeing. These behaviours frequently co-occur and are strongly associated with a range of adverse outcomes, including physical and mental health issues and compromised academic performance. Emerging evidence suggests these risks are particularly concerning in Southeast Asia, particularly Indonesia. In Indonesia, home to over 46 million adolescents (United Nations Population Fund [UNPF], 2024), national surveys highlight the rising prevalence trend. A significant proportion of adolescents do not meet recommended physical activity levels, nearly half engage in prolonged sedentary behaviour, many report sleep difficulties, and dietary quality remains poor (Global School-based Health Survey [GSHS], 2023; Kementerian Kesehatan Republik Indonesia [Kemenkes], 2018). These risks may be further compounded by systemic gaps in health promotion infrastructure and unequal access to services, which are frequently observed in low-resource settings across developing countries (Feigin et al., 2024). Despite the interconnected nature of these behaviours, most health interventions remain siloed, targeting single behaviours in isolation (Ahmed et al., 2021; Pushpa et al., 2024; Rizal et al., 2019). This fragmented approach may overlook the synergistic consequence of behavioural risks and misses critical opportunities for more holistic and efficient solutions. There is an urgent need for integrated interventions – characterised by addressing multiple behavioural risk factors simultaneously or sequentially – that are grounded in adolescents' lived experiences and tailored to the constraints of resource-limited environments. Considering this potential, it is encouraged to shift from isolated action to unified strategies, multi behaviour interventions. A focus on the big four behavioural risk factors is not only timely – it is essential to safeguard the health, development, and future potential of Indonesia’s young people and beyond.

Abstract

This article investigates the level of help-seeking among Indonesian students during the covid-19 pandemic. Using an online General Help-seeking Questionnaire, the author collected data from several provinces in Indonesia. A total of 411 (Perempuan = 308; Laki-laki = 103; M Usia = 15,61; SD = 1,57) participants were given their consent to be involved in the study. Results showed that 4 (four) primary sources of help will probably be accessed by students when they experience anxiety or fear during covid-19. Those are help from parents, doctors, family members other than parents, and mental health professionals. These findings imply that parents, doctors, family members, and mental health professionals play a significant role in supporting students. Furthermore, these findings also highlight the need for greater awareness and access to mental health services among Indonesian students. Finally, these sources of help should be prepared with first aid mental health skills to provide appropriate support for the students.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the layered meanings of the hijab within the Pendaki Hijabers community in Indonesia. The research seeks to explain how the hijab functions not only as a religious obligation but also as a cultural signifier of piety, agency, and resistance, making it important to understand its role in shaping Muslim women’s identity in unconventional public spaces. Using a qualitative approach, the study employed in-depth interviews, participant observations during mountain expeditions, and documentation of community campaigns. The data were analyzed through Roland Barthes’ theory of cultural semiotics to identify the denotative, connotative, and mythological meanings of the hijab. The results reveal three key layers of meaning. At the denotative level, the hijab serves as a sign of obedience and piety. At the connotative level, it becomes a symbol of freedom and inclusivity, challenging stereotypes of restriction. At the mythological level, the hijab embodies resistance and social transformation through activities such as daʿwah, the GEMAR (Gerakan Menutup Aurat) campaign, and community service. These findings contribute to religious and cultural studies by offering new insights into the relationship between faith, gender, and physical endurance. They also suggest practical implications for gender equality advocacy, daʿwah strategies, and the promotion of inclusive public spaces for women. The originality of this research lies in situating the hijab within the context of extreme outdoor activities—a domain rarely addressed in previous studies—and in demonstrating how religious symbols operate as dynamic cultural signifiers that bridge devotion, empowerment, and ideological resistance.

Abstract

The prevalence of depression among language learners, specifically Arabic learners, should receive proper attention from academics. Unfortunately, it would be easily overlooked by scholars because they were tend more focusing on the development of effective teaching strategy. The objective of current study was to investigate the effect of demographic variables and language proficiency on symptoms of depression in individuals learning Arabic as a second language. This cross-sectional study involved 1126 participants who voluntarily provided their consent. Of the participants, 762 were female and 364 were male (age M = 20.03 and SD = 1.56). The study collected demographic information, assess language acquisition levels, and measure symptoms of depression. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, and multiple linear regression. Results showed that model proposed in this study with its predictors explained 7.5% of the variance in depression symptoms while factors such as sex, number of siblings, living arrangement, listening skills, and reading skills were found being significant predictors in the model. This study highlights the prevalence of depression among individuals learning Arabic as a second language and the importance of demographic variables and language proficiency in predicting depression symptoms. The findings suggest that interventions to address depression in this population should take into account factors such as sex, number of siblings, living arrangement, and language skills.

Abstract

Academic stress is the pressure on students caused by competition and academic demands. This study examines and analyzes peer guidance and counseling (Peer Counseling) to reduce academic stress and academic burnout experienced by final-year students. The research method used was experimental research involving an experimental group and a control group (Pretest-Posttest Control Group Design), with each group member consisting of 20 participants, selecting participants based on a purposive sampling technique. Each participant was assigned a random assignment. The MANOVA test results showed that peer counseling reduced academic stress (F (2.24) = 101.769; ?p2 = 0.85; p <0.01) and burnout (F (2.24) = 21.769; ?p2 = 0.55; p <0.01). Furthermore, the Wilcoxon test results showed that in the experimental group, there was an enhancement in academic stress (Z = -2.82; p <0.05) and burnout (Z = -2.82: p <0.05). The control group showed an enhancement in burnout (Z = -2.17; p < 0.05), but academic stress showed there was no enhancement (Z = -0.34: p > 0.05). Peer counseling (peer counseling) based (on stress management) as a strategy to overcome academic stress and burnout in final-year students in Metro City.
