Abstract

The present research aims to explore and describe the translation strategies of taboo words in the subtitles of the movie Inang, available on the Netflix platform. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, the study focuses on analyzing Indonesian taboo words translated into English, identifying the strategies applied, and investigating how subtitling can either preserve or alter their intensity and meaning in cross-linguistic and cross-cultural adaptation. The research data was gathered by watching Inang on Netflix, noting the use of taboo words in the Indonesian subtitles, along with their English translations. Data collection involved identifying 23 taboo words or phrases and recording their corresponding timestamps. The collected data was analyzed using interactive data analysis model, which includes data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The analysis revealed two types of the taboo-for-taboo strategy: the first is the taboo for taboo strategy that maintains the same level of taboo as the source language, maintaining its intensity. While the second is the taboo for taboo strategy with a lower level of taboo compared to the source language. In conclusion, the study shows that the taboo-for-taboo strategy in Inang allows for a balanced adaptation of offensive expressions.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the translator's voice in the discursive creative translation of the song Pura-Pura Lupa by Mahen. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the research seeks to explore the translator's role in reconstructing meaning through linguistic adaptation and cultural reinterpretation. The primary data consists of the song lyrics in the source language (Indonesian), performed by Mahen, and their translation into the target language (English), performed by Emma Heesters. Data collection was conducted using a documentation method by gathering and comparing both versions of the lyrics. The theoretical foundation of this study is based on the theory of discursive creative translation, which emphasizes the translator's active role in shaping discourse. Following an interactive model, the analysis process consists of three stages: data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that the translator's voice is reflected in structural and semantic changes, idiomatic adaptation, and shifts in perspective. This study reinforces the idea that translation is not merely a mechanical process but a discursive act that requires linguistic and cultural sensitivity.

Abstract

Lirik lagu bukan hanya sekadar rangkaian kata atau ungkapan artistik, tetapi memiliki fungsi komunikatif. Fungsi ini dimanifestasikan dalam bentuk interaksi tidak langsung antara penulis lagu dan pendengarnya. Dalam menjalankan fungsi ini, penulis lagu menggunakan tindak tutur ilokusi untuk berinteraksi dengan pendengar. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis jenis tindak tutur ilokusi dalam lirik lagu Gala Bunga Matahari karya Sal Priadi. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif deskriptif untuk memberikan gambaran yang mendalam tentang jenis-jenis tindak tutur yang muncul dalam lirik lagu tersebut. Data berupa transkripsi lirik lagu diperoleh dengan menerapkan teknik simak dan catat. Kemudian, data dianalisis dengan mengadopsi model analisis data interaktif yang terdiri dari reduksi data, penyajian data, dan penarikan kesimpulan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa lirik lagu Gala Bunga Matahari mengandung beragam jenis tindak tutur ilokusi, yaitu direktif, asertif, ekspresif, dan komisif. Dari analisis data, ditemukan bahwa tindak tutur direktif adalah jenis yang paling dominan dalam lirik. Hal ini menunjukkan adanya ajakan atau permintaan dari penutur kepada mitra tutur untuk melakukan tindakan tertentu.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis pelanggaran prinsip kerja sama dalam teka-teki berbahasa Indonesia. Pelanggaran prinsip kerja sama didasarkan pada maksim kuantitas, kualitas, relevansi, dan cara menurut teori Grice. Pendekatan kualitatif deskriptif digunakan untuk menggambarkan fenomena ini secara mendalam. Sumber data berupa teka-teki yang diambil dari media cetak dan daring, yang dipilih berdasarkan potensi untuk melanggar prinsip kerja sama. Pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui observasi dan dokumentasi dengan cara mengumpulkan transkrip teka-teki dan jawabannya. Teknik analisis data menggunakan penerapan prinsip kerja sama Grice untuk mengidentifikasi pelanggaran terhadap setiap maksim dan melihat dampaknya terhadap humor. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pelanggaran maksim kuantitas, kualitas, cara, dan relevansi dalam teka-teki berbahasa Indonesia menghasilkan efek humor yang tidak terduga dan menggugah reaksi mitra tutur. Kesimpulannya, pelanggaran prinsip kerja sama memperkaya teka-teki dengan elemen humor, meskipun melanggar prinsip komunikasi yang efisien.

Abstract

The present study analyzes the pragmatic equivalence in the translation of illocutionary speech acts in the lyrics of Gala Bunga Matahari by Sal Priadi. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, this research examines how illocutionary speech acts in the source language (Indonesian) are maintained or altered in the target language (English). Data consist of speech units in the song lyrics and their translations obtained from YouTube’s auto-translate feature, categorized into representative, directive, expressive, commissive, and declarative acts. Data collection follows the documentation method, and analysis is conducted using interactive model: data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. Findings reveal that most speech acts maintain pragmatic equivalence, especially in assertives, directives, commissives, and expressives. However, shifts occur, such as directives changing into commissives and vice versa, altering communicative intent. Some non-equivalence arises due to grammatical differences and translation adjustments for naturalness in English. Despite these shifts, the translation largely preserves the song’s core message. This study highlights the complexities of translating song lyrics while maintaining illocutionary intent, contributing to research in translation studies and pragmatics.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the translation of garment steamer parts terms from English to Indonesian in the user manual. The method used is descriptive qualitative, with data consisting of technical terms related to the parts of the device, both in single words and phrases. The data source is the Philips EasyTouch Plus Garment Steamer user manual, models GC514, GC518, and GC524. The data collection technique employed is the listening and note-taking technique, where the researcher carefully reads the entire text of the manual to identify and record relevant terms. The data analysis follows the interactive model, which includes data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results of the study show the application of five translation techniques: two single techniques (Compensation and Established Equivalent), and three combined techniques (Compensation + Transposition, Compensation + Borrowing, and Compensation + Established Equivalent). The Compensation technique is the most dominant, appearing 6 times, followed by Established Equivalent with 5 occurrences. These findings indicate that Compensation is frequently used to address linguistic differences between the source and target texts. This study implies that understanding the appropriate translation techniques is crucial for producing translations that are accurate and easily understood.

Abstract

The present research aims to analyze the negotiation of Islamic identity in the English translation of Mencari Hilal movie subtitles. The qualitative descriptive method is used to uncover the underlying patterns and nuances in translation, especially in texts with cultural and religious significance. The research data consists of instances of Islamic identity manifested in words and phrases found in the movie subtitles. The primary data source is the bilingual subtitle texts of Mencari Hilal, containing both the original Indonesian dialogue and their English translations. Data collection is carried out using the observation-note taking technique, which involves systematic reading and documentation of relevant translation instances. Data analysis follows the interactive model, which includes data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The study identifies ten negotiation patterns in the subtitle translation of Mencari Hilal, reflecting efforts to adapt Islamic identity into the English cultural context. These patterns include religious commemoration, supernatural beings, religious constructions, religious artifacts, moral and ethical criteria, specialized religious activities, owner of religion, eschatology, religious events, and religious personages. These findings have significant implications for translation studies, particularly in translating texts with religious and cultural nuances. Negotiation in translation can shape audience perceptions of Islamic identity in the film.

Abstract

Translating religious text involves negotiating religious identity to convey meaning across different languages and cultures while preserving spiritual values. Despite growing interest in translation studies, limited attention has been given to how this identity negotiation operates in classical Islamic texts. This study examines the negotiation of religious identity in the English translation of Bidayatul-Hidayah by Al-Ghazali and explores the cultural and theological factors that influence this process. Using a quality descriptive method with comparative and interpretative approaches, the study collects data through close reading, identification of religiously nuanced linguistic units, and organisation in a comparison table. The analysis includes the classification of religious identity markers, comparison between the source and target text, and interpretation based on social-cultural and theological context. The findings reveal seven patterns of religious identity negotiations: in religious practice, eschatological terms, moral concepts, religious groups, sacred artefacts, enlightenment terms, and religious figures. These negotiations reflect the cultural, theological, and value-systems differences between Arabic and English. The Study concludes that translating religious text requires a strategic negotiation of meaning to preserve spiritual integrity while ensuring contextual relevance tor the target audience.

Abstract

The present research employs a descriptive qualitative approach to analyze religious moderation in the content of the Instagram account @nuonline_id. The research data consists of four posts that contain elements of religious moderation, focusing on national commitment, tolerance, anti-violence, and acceptance of tradition. The theoretical approach used is Teun A. Van Dijk's critical discourse analysis, which allows the researcher to explore the ideologies and values embedded in the texts. The research findings highlight four aspects of religious moderation: national commitment, tolerance, anti-violence, and acceptance of tradition. This study concludes that @nuonline_id serves as a source of information and a catalyst for positive change in society by emphasizing the values of moderation in religious practice. The recommendations of this study include the need for further research on the role of social media in promoting the values of religious moderation in Indonesia.   Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif deskriptif untuk menganalisis moderasi beragama dalam konten Instagram @nuonline_id. Data penelitian terdiri dari empat postingan yang mengandung unsur moderasi beragama, dengan fokus pada komitmen nasional, toleransi, anti-kekerasan, dan penerimaan tradisi. Pendekatan teori yang digunakan adalah analisis wacana kritis Teun A. Van Dijk. Hasil penelitian menyoroti empat aspek moderasi beragama yaitu komitmen nasional, toleransi, anti-kekerasan, dan penerimaan tradisi. Penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa @nuonline_id berfungsi sebagai sumber informasi dan katalis perubahan positif dalam masyarakat dengan menekankan nilai-nilai moderasi dalam praktik beragama. Rekomendasi penelitian ini mencakup perlunya studi lebih lanjut tentang peran media sosial dalam mempromosikan nilai-nilai moderasi beragama di Indonesia.
