Abstract

Purpose – This study investigates the role of the Kapuas River not only as a geographical element but also as a vital social and cultural space in shaping social interaction and cultural acculturation within Pontianak's multicultural urban community. The research addresses the lack of studies exploring the river's symbolic and sociocultural dimensions, aiming to enrich the discourse on spatial identity and interethnic relations in riparian urban settings Design/methods/approach – A descriptive qualitative approach was used, involving participatory observation, in-depth interviews with local residents from various ethnic backgrounds, and documentation of everyday cultural and social activities along the riverbanks. The collected data were analyzed thematically to identify patterns of interaction and cultural blending Findings - The findings reveal that the Kapuas River facilitates dynamic intercultural interactions, where daily activities such as floating markets, joint religious festivals, and shared culinary traditions contribute to strengthening social cohesion and constructing a hybrid cultural identity. The study confirms that the river functions as a symbolic corridor mediating social integration and cultural negotiation among diverse urban groups. Research implications/limitations – The study is limited to the eastern part of Pontianak and may not fully represent the entire sociocultural dynamics along the Kapuas River. The qualitative nature of the research emphasizes depth over breadth, and future studies employing mixed methods or covering wider geographical areas are recommended. Nonetheless, this study provides a foundation for integrating cultural-spatial considerations into inclusive urban development and river governance models.

Abstract

Abstract

This Workshop on Scientific Article Writing Assisted by Artificial Intelligence (AI) aimed to enhance the scientific writing competence of secondary school teachers by integrating AI-based tools ethically, reflectively, and productively. The program was held on March 16, 2024, at SMPN 21 Pontianak, involving fifteen teachers from various disciplines. The activity applied the Participatory Action Workshop (PAW) approach, emphasizing collaborative, experiential, and reflective learning through three key stages: orientation, writing practice, and individual mentoring. Participants were trained to use ChatGPT, Perplexity.ai, Humata.ai, and Research Rabbit to assist idea exploration, article structuring, and language editing in accordance with academic conventions. The results revealed significant improvements in teachers’ technical writing skills, understanding of publication ethics, and confidence in developing scholarly manuscripts. Each participant produced a draft article ready for further development and contributed to the formation of the AI-Based Teacher Writing Community of Pontianak as a post-program sustainability outcome. This activity demonstrates that short, intensive AI-assisted training can serve as an effective community engagement model to strengthen teacher professionalism in the digital era and contribute to achieving Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4: Quality Education

Abstract

This study evaluates the gender gap in education in West Kalimantan through an analysis of the Human Development Index (HDI) for the 2021-2023 period. The goal is to identify the differences between men and women in the education sector in different districts/cities, as well as explore the factors that cause these inequalities. With a descriptive approach and secondary data analysis from the Central Statistics Agency, it was found that most districts/cities still experience significant gender inequality. For example, Bengkayang Regency recorded the largest gap with a difference in HDI between men and women of 12.03 points, while Sambas Regency showed a smaller gap with an increasing trend for women. This study emphasizes the importance of more inclusive policies to improve access and quality of education for women, especially in disadvantaged areas. In addition, raising awareness of the importance of gender equality in education is considered important to create sustainable change. The results of this study contribute to the development of a more equitable education policy in West Kalimantan.

This enthusiasm for social media is particularly prominent among teenagers. While social networks provide a platform for emotional expression, unfortunately they are also used to vent anger and use insults and derogatory comments, a phenomenon commonly known as cyberbullying. This section aims to explore the impact of cyberbullying on adolescents within the realm of social media. A literature review method was used, taking articles and journals published between 2013 and 2023, collected from the Google Scholar electronic database. Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of traffic safety education among students in Pontianak City using a descriptive qualitative method. The results reveal a gap between knowledge and traffic rule application. Supervision, peer influence, and family roles significantly affect student behavior. Although students receive formal education, compliance relies on supervision and fear of sanctions. Interactive teaching methods proved more effective than theoretical approaches. A holistic approach involving schools, families, and law enforcement is necessary to enhance traffic awareness and compliance.

Abstract

This study analyzes jealousy within blended family structures and its impact on violence against stepchildren, focusing on a case in Pontianak. A qualitative case study approach was employed, using data from police reports and relevant podcast interviews. The findings reveal that the stepmother's jealousy, triggered by the husband's unequal attention between biological and stepchildren, led to emotional tension that escalated into physical violence. Social pressures and the inability to manage jealousy exacerbated conflicts within the family. The study highlights the importance of healthy emotional management and social support in preventing domestic violence, particularly within blended families.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model assisted by Doratoon animation videos on students’ conceptual understanding in Social Studies for eighth-grade students of SMP Negeri 6 Sengah Temila. This research employed a quantitative approach using a quasi-experimental method with a Pretest-Posttest Control Group Design. The population in this study consisted of all eighth-grade students, with two classes selected as samples using a purposive sampling technique. The experimental class was taught using the PBL model assisted by Doratoon animation videos, while the control class used Canva media. The research instrument was a multiple-choice test consisting of 20 questions administered before and after the treatment to measure students’ conceptual understanding. The data analysis results showed that the average N-Gain score of the experimental class was 21.6% (low category), while the control class scored 22.6% (low category). The independent sample t-test yielded a significance value of 0.000 < 0.05, indicating a significant difference between the experimental and control classes. Therefore, the Problem-Based Learning model assisted by Doratoon animation videos was proven to be more effective than Canva media in improving students’ conceptual understanding in Social Studies. The results of this study are expected to serve as a reference for teachers in applying innovative learning media to support more interactive and meaningful learning.
