Abstract

In the era of globalization, effective communication skills have become increasingly crucial for educators, particularly those in non-language departments. This study investigates the impact of a Participatory Communication Approach on improving English speaking skills among lecturers from non-language departments at Jinarakkhita Buddhist College of Lampung. The research addresses the significant challenges faced by these lecturers, including linguistic difficulties, lack of confidence, and limited speaking practice opportunities. Employing a quantitative research design with a pretest-posttest experimental group approach, the study involved 20 lecturers (10 males, 11 females) from Buddhist Communication Science, Buddhist Education, and Buddhist Business and Management departments. The research was conducted from February 20th to April 20th, 2024, using Madsen's speaking skill rubric to assess participants' performance across five key dimensions: comprehension, pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, and speech speed. The findings revealed a significant improvement in lecturers' speaking skills which is representing a 13.5% enhancement. The study concludes that this approach provides a supportive, collaborative learning environment that helps non-language lecturers overcome communication barriers. By promoting active engagement, peer feedback, and interactive learning, institutions can effectively develop lecturers' English-speaking skills, ultimately improving educational quality and global academic interactions.

Abstract

This recent study was conducted in the former residency of Madiun, East Java. The study aimed to identify the effectiveness of counseling media as tools for Buddhist counselors. The counseling media involved posters, short videos, and PowerPoint presentations. The population of the study consisted of Buddhist people living in the former residency of Madiun, and the sample was selected using a simple random sampling. The total respondents of the study were 50 Buddhist participants who met the criteria for the research. The data for this study were collected using pretests and posttests. The quasi-experimental design used in this study was a one-group pretest-posttest design. The results of these tests were then analyzed statistically using SPSS to determine the effectiveness of the counseling media. The analysis focused on comparing pretest and posttest scores to assess the improvement in participants' knowledge after receiving treatment through the counseling media. The results of the study showed that all three counseling media—posters, short videos, and PowerPoint presentations—are effective tools for counseling, as the posttest values were higher than the pretest values. Among the three media, the PowerPoint presentations achieved the highest average score, indicating their superior effectiveness in enhancing knowledge.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe: (1) Haley’s model of human perceptual space category used to create the metaphorical expression of craving in the Tanha Vagga verse of the Dhammapada scripture, (2) the distribution of Haley's category of human perceptual space that is most prominently used to create the metaphorical expression of craving in the Tanha Vagga verse of the Dhammapada scripture, (3) the state of the ecological system as seen in the metaphor of craving in the Tanha Vagga verse of the Dhammapada scripture based on the distribution of the use of the Haley’s category of the human perceptual space. This research is a descriptive-qualitative research, with Content Analysis technique. The data source is the Tanha Vagga Dhammapada Scripture. The results showed: (1) in the Tanha Vagga scripture Dhammapada there are 31 metaphors of craving that can be categorized into the five spaces of human perception according to Haley's model, including the categories of being, energy, terrestrial, object and living. (2) Based on the results of the distribution of the use of the Haley’s model of human perceptual space, it was found that the living category was the most prominent type of craving metaphor category with a percentage of 35.4%, (3) the percentage distribution results reflected the unbalanced state of the ecological system in the Tanha Vagga verses of Dhammapada. The metaphorical expression of craving in the Tanha Vagga of the Dhamapada scriptures is packaged in a metaphorical form which means controlling lust (taṇhā = Pali) which causes dukkha (suffering) and the cycle of rebirth (saṃsāra). Buddhism seeks to eliminate taṇhā to eliminate dukkha.

Abstract

Writing skills are a fundamental component of academic and professional success, enabling effective communication, critical thinking, and knowledge construction. Despite their significance, many students, particularly those learning English as a second or foreign language, face challenges in developing proficient writing abilities. These difficulties are often compounded by individual differences, including personality traits such as introversion and extroversion. While previous studies have explored various pedagogical approaches to enhance writing skills, limited research has focused on how these methods interact with students’ personality types, especially within the context of higher education. This study aims to investigate how a deep learning approach, a pedagogy emphasizing meaningful, mindful, and joyful learning supports and enhances the writing performance of extroverted students compared to introverted ones. The research was conducted with 23 second-semester students from the Buddhist Communication Science Department at Jinarakkhita Buddhist College in Lampung, Indonesia. A mixed-method design was employed, combining pre- and post-writing tests scored using Heaton’s rubric with interviews and personality assessments based on the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire. The findings revealed that the most participants were extroverts, and they demonstrated a significant improvement in overall writing ability after the intervention, particularly in organization and content development. Paired samples t-tests confirmed statistically significant differences between pre-test and post-test scores, indicating the effectiveness of the deep learning strategy for extroverted learners. These results suggest that personality-informed instructional strategies can optimize writing instruction, especially for extroverted students who benefit from interactive and collaborative learning environments. The study contributes to the growing body of research on personalized pedagogy and highlights the importance of aligning teaching methods with students’ psychological profiles to maximize learning outcomes.

Abstract

The Sri-Kehati Index shares, which offer shares of environmentally friendly companies, are of great interest to investors who care about the environment. This research aims to determine the determinant factors of company value in Sri-Kehati Index companies, with profitability as a moderating variable. The determinant factors used in modeling are green investment, corporate social responsibility, and good corporate governance. ROA proxied profitability, and company value is proxied by price book value. The research uses a quantitative approach with descriptive-verification methods. The research population is companies that are members of the Sri-Kehati Index 2016-2021; the sample is determined using a purposive sampling technique—data analysis techniques using panel data regression and Moderated Regression Analysis (MRA). The research results show that partially green investment and good corporate governance have a positive effect, but corporate social responsibility does not affect company value. Profitability can moderate the relationship between good corporate governance and firm value. Besides that, green investment, corporate social responsibility, and good corporate governance simultaneously influence the company value of companies that are members of the Sri-Kehati Index stock group. The results of this research can be a basis for consideration by investors who care about the environment in investment decisions and can be a reference for further research. It is hoped that the results of this research will encourage many companies to implement green investments to help overcome environmental problems.
