Abstract

Abstract

This study explores the social and political life of the Sidoresmo Islamic boarding school (pesantren) from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. The research focuses on the socio-economic dynamics of the surrounding community, the relationship between the pesantren and the local Muslim society, as well as the pesantren's involvement in anti-colonial resistance against the Dutch East Indies government. The study employs a historical approach, relying primarily on official colonial government reports and period newspapers as primary sources. These written records are complemented by oral accounts transmitted across generations, particularly from fathers or grandfathers to current local informants. The research reveals several important findings concerning the strategic role of the pesantren in shaping communal life and local resistance. One of the key discoveries is that communal life in Sidoresmo was not only religiously structured but also served as a social foundation for resistance movements. Furthermore, the study sheds light on the 19th-century pesantren education model, which exhibits distinctive characteristics, such as the kiai-santri relationship, traditional methods of Islamic book (kitab kuning) instruction, and the integration of religious education with cultural resilience. These aspects of pesantren education in the 19th century remain underexplored in modern Indonesian historiography. Thus, this study contributes to a broader understanding of the pesantren not merely as a religious institution, but as a dynamic socio-political and educational force in pre-independence Indonesian history. It aims to enrich the discourse on pesantren-based resistance and local Islamic education during colonial times.

Abstract

This paper shows that Arabic language learning in Ampel Village, Surabaya has been going on for centuries and has undergone various transformations along with the changing times. In the early days, Arabic language learning was more informal and conducted in mosques and the homes of religious leaders. The curriculum taught was very thick with religious values and Islamic culture. Along with the times, formal educational institutions such as pesantren and schools began to play an important role in the development of Arabic language learning. The curriculum taught is increasingly diverse, covering aspects of linguistics, literature, and Islamic sciences. This research concludes that Arabic language learning in Ampel Village is an integral part of the history and identity of the local community. Despite facing various challenges, the spirit to learn Arabic remains alive among the people of Ampel Village. The results of this study are expected to contribute to the development of an Arabic language learning curriculum that is relevant to the context of the times and enrich the scientific treasury on the history of Islamic education in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study explores how Islamic teachings can contribute to the creation of a regulated and sustainable transportation system amid the challenges of urbanisation and population growth. The research method used is a qualitative approach with an analysis of Islamic law (fiqh) focusing on masalih mursalah. Data was collected through a literature review of classical and contemporary Islamic literature, transportation policies, and empirical observations of traffic conditions in Jakarta. The analysis was conducted by integrating the principles of masalih mursalah with empirical data to formulate relevant solutions. The study also considered social and environmental aspects within the framework of Sharia law. The findings indicate that masalih mursalah can serve as a basis for Islamic transportation policies, such as the development of affordable public transportation, zone-based restrictions on private vehicles, and public education on traffic discipline as a solution to urban life. The results of this study are important as a paradigm for resolving Jakarta's chronic traffic congestion problem.

Abstract

This study aims at analyzing and describing the discourse of the official website content of Pusat Pengembangan Bisnis (P2B) UIN Jakarta using Discourse Analysis. The objectives involve identifying communicative deficiencies and proposing strategies for improvement. The descriptive qualitative method involves textual and multimodal coding of website content. Results indicate that the content lacks multimodal features (e.g. visuals, icons), absence of feedback forms, and multilingual content. Recommendations include adopting conversational register, integrating visual resources, providing multilingual options, and incorporating interactive feedback features. These strategies are crucial as UIN Jakarta transitions toward Public Legal Entity (PTN-BH) status, where communicative digital discourse aligns with institutional transparency and competitiveness. Abstract

This study aims to describe a historical perspective on religious moderation in the South Sulawesi region, focusing on the harmonious relationship between the Toraja, Bugis and other tribes. Although the majority of Tana Toraja's population is Christian, good relations with people of other religions, including Islam, have been established and maintained for centuries. Through a historical approach, this research will seek the historical roots of tolerance and peaceful relations between religious groups in the region. The history of the South Sulawesi region shows a tradition of religious moderation that has been passed down from generation to generation. The religious and cultural diversity of the region has shaped a unique and complementary social identity, despite the dark historical memories that exist between them. The research method used in this study is oral source-based historical analysis with Toraja traditional leaders. The data collected will be analysed to reveal the pattern of relationship between the tribes in the context of religion. The results of this study will illustrate that religious tolerance in South Sulawesi has been rooted since the past and did not appear out of nowhere. The tradition and culture of religious moderation have played a role in creating a social environment that respects differences and facilitates interfaith dialogue.

Abstract

This article examines the existence of Tawan Karang Rights as one of the traditional legal practices in the archipelago which was maintained by the coastal communities of the Dutch East Indies until the end of the 19th century. The focus of this research is to understand how Tawan Karang Rights as a form of customary law interact, conflict and negotiate with the international shipping legal framework introduced by the Dutch colonial era. This research uses legal research methods by looking at the legal products of Tawan Karang in the Kingdom of Bali and the Kingdom of Teunom, in Aceh and comparing them with conventional shipping law at that time. This article shows that the interaction between Tawan Karang Rights and international shipping law in the Dutch East Indies was a reflection of the broader conflict between customary law and colonial law. This practice not only reflects the socio-economic dynamics of coastal communities, but also highlights how customary law attempts to negotiate its existence in the face of modern legal pressures brought about by colonialism.

Abstract

This study discusses how wasatiyyah preaching carried out by Tuan Guru Kiyai Haji Muhammad Zainuddin Abdul Madjid (hereinafter referred to as Tuan Guru Zainuddin) (1898-1997) was implemented in strengthening the understanding of Islam Wasatiyyah, which he established together with his students. This study employs a qualitative method with a literature review sourced from the will and poems written by Tuan Guru Zainuddin himself, as well as other relevant books. The theories used in this study include the theory of wasatiyyah, by Quraish Shihab, which states that something can be said to be wasat when it contains elements of goodness and provides benefits, is the best of what is good, is fair, or puts things in their proper place, without leaning to the left or right (being in the middle). Second, the structural functional theory, by Talcott Parson, which states that a structure will function well if all other functions are functioning properly. Third, the theory of sustainability, by Meadows, et.al, which states that sustainability in a plan will occur when someone is able to respond to existing social needs, and that response is intended for the needs of the present and the future. The results of this study conclude that Mr. Zainuddin optimises the function of the madrasah in his series of sermons. It was also found that there are three wasatiyyah sermons in strengthening the function of preaching, which succeeded in establishing a community organisation and providing the first special madrasah for women in NTB. It was also found that the existence of dakwah persists to this day due to the application of the wasatiyyah approach, which leverages existing functions and is highly responsive to the surrounding social environment.
