Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menginvestigasi tipe-tipe dan sumber interlanguage yang dinuat oleh siswa-siswa kelas X di SMKN 1 Singaraja dalam menulis teks deskriptif. Keseluruhan data dianalisis menggunakan teori dari Azar dalam mengklasifikasikan tipe-tipe eror yang dibuat oleh siswa. Berdasarkan data dari analisis penelitian ini, terdapat 14 tipe eror yang dibuat oleh siswa yang termasuk: verb tense (16.61%), capitalization (14.70%), omit a word (11.50%), add a word (10.86%), singular-plural (8.31%), run-on sentence (6.39%), word choice, word order dan spelling (5.75%), punctuation (4.79%), word form (3.51%), article (2.56%), meaning not clear (1.92%), dan yang terakhir yaitu incomplete sentence (1.60%). Berkaitan dengan sumber-sumber eror, hasil dari penelitian ini mengindikasikan bahwa sumber terbesar dari eror adalah communication strategy (46.33%)Kata Kunci : teks deskriptif, interlanguage, tulisan This research aimed at investigating the types and sources of interlanguage committed by the students of class X in SMKN 1 Singaraja in writing descriptive text. All data were analyzed by using Azar’s theory in classifying the types of error committed by the students. Based on the analysis of this study’s data, there were 14 types of errors committed by the students, which includes: verb tense (16.61%), capitalization (14.70%), omit a word (11.50%), add a word (10.86%), singular-plural (8.31%), run-on sentence (6.39%), word choice, word order and spelling (5.75%), punctuation (4.79%), word form (3.51%), article (2.56%), meaning not clear (1.92%), and the last was incomplete sentence (1.60%). Abstract

Penelitian ini ditujukan untuk menganalisis strategi terjemahan yang sering dan jarang digunakan dalam cerita pendek yang berjudul In Twilight Born oleh John. H. McGlynn. Penelitian ini termasuk dalam penelitian kualitatif dengan menggunakan checklist dan rubrik sebagai instrumen. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan translation by paraphrase using unrelated word sebagai strategi yang paling sering digunakan dan Translation using loan word or loan word plus explanation sebagai strategi yang paling jarang digunakan. Terdapat 11 kata yang termasuk strategi translation by paraphrase using unrelated word dan 4 kata termasuk strategi translation using a loan word or loan word plus explanation. Selain itu, kualitas terjemahan yang dimiliki dalam cerita pendek yaitu akurat, berterima, dan mudah dibaca. Dalam aspek keakuratan, ditemukan data sebanyak 254 kalimat yang termasuk sebagai terjemahan akurat, 47 kalimat termasuk terjemahan kurang akurat, dan 1 kalimat termasuk terjemahan tidak akurat. Dalam aspek keberterimaan, ditemukan sebanyak 272 kalimat yang termasuk sebagai terjemahan berterima, 30 kalimat termasuk terjemahan kurang berterima, dan 1 kalimat termasuk terjemahan tidak berterima. Dalam aspek keterbacaan, ditemukan sebanyak 279 kalimat yang termasuk sebagai terjemahan terbaca, 14 kalimat termasuk terjemahan kurang terbaca, dan 0 kalimat termasuk terjemahan tidak terbaca. Dengan demikian, penelitian ini bermanfaat untuk para penerjemah dapat memberikan hasil terjemahan yang lebih baik melalui penggunaan strategi dalam menerjemahkan teks dan meningkatkan kualitas terjemahan. Selanjutnya, peneliti lain diharapkan bisa menggunakan jenis strategi lain dan teks yang berbeda.Kata Kunci : terjemahan, strategi terjemahan, kualitas terjemahan, cerita pendek This study was aimed at analyzing translation strategies in the short story entitled In Twilight Born by John H. McGlynn. This study is qualitative research that used checklist and rubric as the instruments. It was found that translation by paraphrase using unrelated word as a strategy that mostly used and the translation using loan word or loan word plus explanation as a strategy that rarely used. There were 11 words in translation by paraphrase using unrelated word and 4 words in translation using a loan word or loan word plus explanation. Moreover, the quality of short story translation was accurate, acceptable, and readable. In accuracy aspect, there were 254 sentences categorized as an accurate translation, 47 sentences as less accurate translation, and 1 sentence as an inaccurate translation. In acceptable aspect, there were 272 sentences categorized as an acceptable translation, 30 sentences as less acceptable translation, and 1 sentence as an inacceptable translation. In readability aspect, there were 279 sentences categorized as a high readability, 14 sentences as a medium readability, and 0 sentence as a low readability. Thus, it is beneficial for other translators to conduct better translation result by applying the strategies and improving the quality of translation as well as it is as the reflection for the other researchers to apply other strategies and use other text sources.keyword : translation, translation strategy, quality of translation, short story

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui ada atau tidaknya perbedaan yang signifikan pada pemahaman membaca siswa kelas X di SMA N 1 Singaraja yang diajar melalui strategi mengajar timbal balik dan strategi konvensional. Desain penelitian ini adalah eksperimental semu dengan menggunakan desain kelompok kontrol post-test. Populasinya adalah siswa kelas X SMA N 1 Singaraja. Pengambilan sampel acak kluster digunakan untuk memilih sampel. Sampel penelitian ini adalah siswa X MIA3 dan X MIA2. Setiap kelas terdiri dari 32 siswa. Kelompok eksperimen diajarkan melalui strategi pengajaran timbal balik sementara kelompok kontrol diajarkan melalui strategi konvensional. Post-test dilakukan untuk mengumpulkan data. Data dianalisis secara deskriptif dan inferensial dengan menggunakan IMB SPSS Statistics 25. Hasilnya menunjukkan bahwa kelompok eksperimen memperoleh skor yang lebih baik daripada kelompok kontrol. Nilai rata-rata untuk kelompok eksperimen adalah 70,84 sementara kelompok kontrol memperoleh 65,93. Statistik inferensial dilakukan dengan melakukan uji-t. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa to > tcv (12.029 > 1.99897). Hal ini mengindikasikan bahwa terdapat perbedaan yang signifikan dari penerapan Strategi Pengajaran Reciprocal pada pemahaman membaca siswa kelas sepuluh di SMA N 1 Singaraja diterima. Ukuran efek dari penelitian ini adalah 0,50725. Itu diklasifikasikan ke dalam efek sedang.Kata Kunci : Eksperimen, Pemahaman Membaca, Strategi Mengajar Timbal-Balik This study aimed at determining whether or not there was a significant difference on tenth grade students’ reading comprehension in SMA N 1 Singaraja who were taught by using reciprocal teaching strategy and conventional strategy. The design of this study was quasi-experimental design utilizing post-test only control group design. The population was tenth grade students of SMA N 1 Singaraja. Cluster random sampling was used to select the sample. The samples of this study were X MIA3 and X MIA2 students. Each class consisted of 32 students. The experimental group was taught by using reciprocal teaching strategy meanwhile control group was taught by using conventional strategy. Post-test was conducted to collect the data. The data was analyzed descriptively and inferentially by using IMB SPSS Statistics 25. The result showed that experimental group obtained better score than control group. The mean score for experimental group was 70.84 while control group obtained 65.93. Inferential statistics was done by conducting t-test. The result showed that to > tcv (2.029 > 1.99897). It indicated that stated there is a significant different of the implementation of Reciprocal Teaching Strategy on tenth grade students’ reading comprehension in SMA N 1 Singaraja was accepted. The effect size of this study was 0.50725. It was classified into medium effect.keyword : Experiment, Reading Comprehension, Reciprocal Teaching Strategy

Abstract

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menemukan tipe-tipe dari strategi komunikasi yang digunakan oleh staf pelayanan informasi di Jatiluwih Rice Terrace, tipe dari strategi komunikasi yang paling banyak digunakan oleh staf, dan alasan dari strategi komunikasi yang digunakan oleh staf. Penelitian ini menggunakan qualitative design. Metode yang digunakan untuk mengumpulkan data adalah observasi dan wawancara. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukan bahwa ada delapan tipe strategi komunikasi yang digunakan oleh staf pelayanan informasi di Jatiluwih Rice Terrace, yaitu; Message Abandonment (17%), Circumlocution (1%), Non-linguistic Signal (18%), Literal Translation (6%), Foreign zing (11%), Appeal for help (10%), Stalling or Time Gaining (18%), Comprehension check (11%), and Clarification request (8%). Time gaining dan Non Linguistic signal merupakan tipe strategi komunikasi yang paling banyak digunakan oleh staf. Ada dua alasan utama dari strategi komunikasi yang digunakan oleh staf, yaitu; (1 untuk menghindari kesulitan bahasa yang akan dihadapi oleh staf agar membuat pengunjung lebih mudah untuk memahami dan tidak bingung tentang ucapan dan (2) untuk membuat komunikasi lebih efisien dan menyediakan waktu untuk berpikir.Kata Kunci : strategi komunikasi, layanan informasi, jatiluwih rice terrace The purpose of the study was to find out the types of communication strategies used by the Information Center Staff at Jatiluwih Rice Terrace, the type of communication strategies mostly used by the staff, and the reasons of communication strategies used by the staff. The subject of this study was the Information Center staff at Jatiluwih Rice Terrace. This study employed qualitative design. The methods of data collection were observation and interview. The findings of study showed that there were nine types of communication strategies applied by Tourist Information Center staff at Jatiluwih Rice Terrace, namely; Message Abandonment (17%), Circumlocution (1%), Non-linguistic Signal (18%), Literal Translation (6%), Foreign zing (11%), Appeal for help (10%), Stalling or Time Gaining (18%), Comprehension check (11%), and Clarification request (8%) Time gaining and Non Linguistic signal were the communication strategies that were mostly used by the staff. There are two main reasons of communication strategies used, namely; (1) to avoid language difficulties that would be faced by the staff to make the visitors easier to understand and not confused about the utterance and (2) to make the communication more efficient and provide time to think.keyword : communication strategies, information center, jatiluwih rice terrace

Abstract

Writing skills are still lacking and weak in students' classes and are often ignored by students. This study aimed at analyzing, and calculating the types and the sources of grammatical errors committed by the second-semester students from four classes in the English Language Education department academic year 2020/2021 in their comparison and contrast paragraphs. The final semester test of the Paragraph Writing course was used as the instrument of the study. Additionally, in analyzing the data, the theory by Dulay, Burt, and Krashen (1982) was used to describe the types of errors and the theory by Richards (1974) was used to analyze the errors’ sources. After that, that data was calculated. From the 114 paragraphs, 38 paragraphs that contained erroneous sentences were found. Four types of errors were classified, namely omission with 61 errors or 65%, followed by addition with 23 errors or 25%, then misformation with 6 errors or 6%, and the lowest was misordering with 4 errors or 4%. The errors were committed because of two sources; the first was an interlingual error that occurred 52 times or 54.84% and the second was an intralingual error with 42 errors or 45.16%. Conclusively, the omission and addition errors were the errors that needed to be concerned about because these two types of errors showed a very significant number of occurrences. Therefore, the students should be more aware of the grammar rules and teachers should emphasize the appropriate teaching method or technique to prevent the same errors to be happening in the future.

Abstract

This study aimed at investigating the implementation of the process based approach in teaching writing in order to know its effect to the improvement of students’ writing achievement Furthermore, the quantitative method was used in this research with quasi experimental design. The subjects involved in this study were 35 Junior High School students from VII A7 class in SMP Negeri 1 Singaraja, Bali, Indonesia. The proficiency test such as pretest and post test were conducted in this study in oder to collect the data. The students were given a treatment for about eight weeks. The data obtained were analysed by using descriptive and inferential statistics. It was analyzed using SPSS. As the result of statistical analysis, it was found that sig 2-tailed result in the paired samples t-test wast 0.00, which was below 0.05. In terms of the mean score, it was found the mean score in the post test (80.46) was higher than the mean score in the pretest (68.59). So, it can be concluded that process based approach had a significant effect on the seventh’ grade students writing achievement.

Abstract

This study aimed to find out types of swear words that are used in the moonlight movie and to analyze purposes of the characters. The subject of this research is the characters in Moonlight movie. This research used descriptive qualitative design.  This study used Wardhaugh (2006) theory and Andersson and Trudgill (1992) . This research employed two instruments namely the researcher himself and checklist. The result shows that, excretion swear words appeared 38 %, Sex swear words appeared 27 %, religious matter swear word appeared 20 %, mother in law swear words appeared 4 %, animal swear words appeared 7 %, death, and bodily function swear words respectively appeared 2 %. Looking at the purposes of the characters in using swear word the most dominant is used by the characters is auxiliary which appeared 49 % , abusive appeared 47 % , and expletive which appeared 4 %.

Abstract

Literature has been effectively used to transfer values to children even school existed (Edgington, 2002), yet the task for selecting good literature is not simple. Therefore, this study aims to analyse a children literature entitled Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson, in order to reveal the values of character education proposed by Kemendikbud (2016) on Jesse Aarons’ characterization. This study applies the interactive model of qualitative data analysis by Miles et al. (2014). Through Jesse Aarons’ characterization, it is found out that he possessed 29 characters and 25 of them belong to the values proposed by Kemendikbud (2016). Those values are religious, peace-loving, tolerant, wise, nature-loving, nationalist, self-sacrificing, achiever, patriotic, disciplined, independent, hardworking, tough, creative, courageous, mutual-cooperative, democratic, nonviolent, solidarity, voluntary, integrity, honest, loyal, fair, and responsible.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyzethe types and functions of code switching used by the actors and actress in Indonesian movie entitled “Bridezilla”. This study used descriptive qualitative method. In collecting the data, this study used document analysis method with checklist analysis form and taking a note as the instruments used. There 5 were steps done in order tocollect the data, such as watching movie, giving mark in the checklist analysis form, taking a note, giving explanation and conclusion based on the results of analysis. It was found that in “Bridezilia” movie consisted ofcode switching in 35 dialogs, there were three types of code switching, such as Tag-Switching13 dialogs, Inter-Sentential 10 dialogs and Intra-Sentential Switching in 12 dialogs. Meanwhile, there were 2 functions of code switching existed in the movie. It can be concluded that the existence of code switching in Indonesian movie indicating that the other language has big impact toward the first language.

Abstract

In The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks, Allison Nelson was characterized as an inspiring woman who fought for her dreams. Meanwhile, Noah Calhoun was described as a loving man that respected Allison as a woman. This novel contained traits of rich liberal feminism. The purpose of the present research was to find out the traits of Noah Calhoun and Allison Nelson as the main characters that represented liberal feminism in the novel. The method of this research was textual analysis to analyze the traits. Data collection was linguistics unit corpora recorded in written forms. The finding of this research can be stated that Noah Calhoun and Allison Nelson were categorized as liberal feminists. Their traits were a combination of positive feminine and masculine traits. The traits of the main characters as liberal feminists were appreciative, forceful, strong, devoted, firm, sensitive, confident, patient, carefree, responsible, and independent.
