Abstract

The objectives of this service activity are: (1) to introduce and train the abilities of Department of Biology Education, Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering, Mandalika University of Education students in planting media in the form of raw husks which will be processed into fermentated husks; (2) Forbidding to students that smoked husks are a good planting medium for ornamental plants. Service activities carried out within 1 day. The stages of this service activity are: (1) Introduction; (2) Initial Fermentation Process Practice Activities; (3) Continuation Activities (observations for 3 weeks). The 1 day activity is used to process raw husks that have just been taken from the rice mill, then fermented using EM4 as a bioactivator (observations after 3 weeks). Based on the results of the activity evaluation, it can be interpreted that the objectives of this service activity have been achieved as expected. This achievement can be seen from the ability of students to process raw husks into cooked husks which are ready to be used as a planting medium for ornamental plants.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of Problem Based Learning based on Quiz (PBL-Q) on students' mastery of biology concepts in terms of academic ability. The number of research participants was 62 Biology Education students at Universitas Pendidikan Mandalika. The study was conducted in the odd semester of the 2023/2024 and 2024/2025 academic years. The research material was from the plant physiology course. The instrument used to assess concept mastery was an essay test on Plant Physiology consisting of 11 valid and reliable questions. Data were analyzed using the Ancova test with a significance level of 5%. The results of the study showed that: a) there were differences in students' mastery of biology concepts based on learning models, students who used the PBL-Q model had better mastery of biology concepts than students who used the PBL model; b) there were differences in students' mastery of biology concepts based on academic ability, students with high academic ability were better than students with low academic ability; c) there were differences in students' mastery of biology concepts based on the interaction between the learning model and students' academic ability. Based on LSD notation, students' mastery of biology concepts is ranked from highest to lowest: PBL-Q students with high academic ability, PBL-Q students with low academic ability, PBL students with high academic ability, and PBL students with low academic ability. The findings of this study indicate that the PBL-Q learning model can help students improve their mastery of biology concepts in terms of academic ability, especially in Plant Physiology material

Abstract

Understanding scientific culture (USC) and developing problem-solving skills (PSS) are important elements in facing complex global challenges in the digital era. This study examines the effects of creativity (CRV), communication (CMN), and digital literacy (DGL) on USC and PSS in biology students at Universitas Negeri Makassar, Universitas PGRI Sumatera Barat, and Universitas Pendidikan Mandalika in Indonesia. A cross-sectional quantitative survey approach was used with a structured online questionnaire, and data were analyzed using the Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) method. The results showed that CRV had a significant direct effect on USC and PSS. CMN also had an effect on USC. However, the direct effect of CMN on PSS was not significant, indicating that its role in improving problem-solving skills was mediated by USC. In contrast, DGL showed a weaker direct effect on PSS and USC, indicating a less dominant role than creativity and communication. These findings emphasize the importance of a synergistic educational approach that integrates CRV, CMN, and DGL to support USC and PSS. Emphasis on creativity as a transformative tool and communication as a collaborative medium in scientific contexts is highly recommended, while DGL needs to be further developed to effectively complement these competencies. Future research needs to explore these relationships in different contexts to refine educational strategies and address evolving challenges.

Abstract

The purpose of this service activity is to increase the knowledge and competence of Undikma Biology Education study program students in preparing PKM (Student Creativity Program) 2023 proposals as an effort to strengthen the scientific writing movement. The method of implementing this service is a workshop which is conducted online via zoom. Participants in this activity were 122 students and lecturers of Biology education. The evaluation instrument is in the form of a response questionnaire from activity participants. Data analysis technique uses a Likert scale. Indicators of the success of the activity can be seen from the enthusiasm of the participants who took part in the activity from other study programs and some even came from outside the region, there were interactive discussions between participants and presenters, and the formation of 16 PKM groups with various fields of study. The results of this service activity show that 92% of the participants responded to this activity that their knowledge and competence related to PKM increase.
