Abstract

This study aims to examine the narrative adaptation process of animal stories in the Qur'an into children's storybooks, using Tafsir Al-Jalalain as the primary interpretive reference. The focus of this research is to analyze how the messages contained in Qur'anic verses and classical interpretations can be effectively communicated to children through illustrated storytelling media. This study employs a qualitative approach based on literature review, with Linda Hutcheon’s theory of narrative adaptation as the analytical framework. The findings indicate that the adaptation process involves three main aspects: (1) media and style transposition, which refers to the transformation of theological texts into visual-narrative media appropriate for children; (2) reinterpretation, which simplifies the meanings of the verses and tafsir into accessible stories while maintaining the core messages; and (3) intertextuality, which highlights the connections between Qur'anic texts, classical tafsir, and the adapted narratives in children's books. The transformation of narrative elements such as plot, characters, conflict, and moral messages is carried out with consideration of children's cognitive and emotional development, while preserving the integrity of Islamic values. This research concludes that narrative adaptation of Qur'anic animal stories can serve as an effective literacy-based da'wah strategy for introducing Islamic teachings to young audiences in an engaging, visual, and educational manner. Abstract

The phenomenon of moral degradation among junior high school students has shown an increasingly concerning trend. This study aims to examine the role of school management in implementing spiritual education to shape the Islamic character of junior high school students. A descriptive qualitative method was employed, with teachers and students at MTs N 1 Surakarta serving as the research subjects. Data were collected through document analysis, in-depth interviews, and observation. The findings reveal: (1) Planning emphasizes school-designed programs such as 3S (greeting, shaking hands, smiling), which are supported by standard operating procedures (SOPs) and clearly assigned responsibilities to ensure systematic implementation of spiritual education; (2) Organization involves a collaborative system among homeroom teachers, subject teachers, school counselors, and all educational staff, with particular emphasis on the role of the vice principal for student affairs in character development; (3) Implementation of spiritual education is carried out through the active participation of students, teachers, committees, and other institutions, with a focus on fostering good morals and manners through habituation; and (4) Control and evaluation are conducted by providing continuous guidance and socialization of school regulations to students to reinforce and sustain the positive habits that have been instilled.

Abstract

Pesantren (Islamic Boarding School) Al-Mukmin Ngruki is underestimated by some of the Indonesian people. It is considered as the center of radical teachings that have no tolerance to others. But in fact, the values of tolerance can be found in the teaching materials. With Bayani and Burhani approaches in understanding the religious source, pesantren Al-Mukmin persists to implant the values of tolerance to the students in the learning process, such as behave positively toward differences and plurality. The leaders of pesantren make those values as the starting point to strengthen multicultural education in pesantren with role modeling, habituation, attention, and advice in living those values.

Abstract

This article aims to shed light on the roots of ex-jihadists' thinking and activities following their exit from the de-radicalisation programme. It seeks to continue the discussion on radicalism and de-radicalisation in Indonesia. Based on field data and interviews with several informants in Surakarta, this article explains that former jihadists have different ideological genealogies. However, after their departure from these groups and activities, there are similarities in terms of survival strategies. The results of this study also show that almost all of them experienced obstacles when they first returned to normal society. But now they have managed to carry out their activities as traders and entrepreneurs in their own way. Some of them are even able to create associations that voice the importance of upholding the spirit of nationalism and rejecting acts of terror. Applying Weber's theory of individual action, this article also shows a shift in rational action choices that are intertwined with quite complex interests.

Abstract

The hadith “Seek knowledge even as far as China” is very familiar among Indonesian society and indeed throughout the world. Due to its popularity, there are many scholarly views regarding the authenticity of this hadith. Although it is widely used as a motivational tool for learning, a closer examination of its chain of narrators shows that this hadith is classified as weak (dha’if). The hadith “Seek knowledge even as far as China” is well-known in Indonesia and carries the meaning of motivating individuals not to hesitate in seeking knowledge, even if it requires traveling far. It reflects a high spirit of pursuing knowledge and an appreciation for the quality of education, even if it means undertaking a long journey to a distant land. China, as one of the oldest civilizations in the world, has long been recognized as a center of knowledge and culture. Today, China also occupies an important position in the global education system. This study aims to examine the chain of narrators (sanad) of this hadith according to the perspectives of various scholars, and to assess whether it can still serve as a motivational guideline in the present day. Hadith scholars do not accept a narration unless it has a clear sanad. This approach was developed in response to the spread of false reports attributed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Since then, scholars have meticulously scrutinized each chain of transmission, accepting narrations as evidence only if they meet the criteria of shahih (authentic) or hasan (good), and rejecting those that do not meet these conditions. Abstract

This study examines the two fundamental dimensions of Qur’anic revelation as reflected in QS. Al-‘Alaq (1–5) and QS. ‘Abasa (1–10) and analyzes their relevance for contemporary Islamic education. The primary aim is to elucidate how revelation functions simultaneously as an epistemological foundation for intellectual development and as a moral guide for ethical and humanistic formation. Employing a qualitative library research design, the study analyzes the selected verses through content analysis using a thematic (maudhu‘i) tafsir approach, supported by classical and contemporary exegetical sources and scholarly literature on Islamic education. The findings indicate that QS. Al-‘Alaq emphasizes literacy, learning, and knowledge acquisition grounded in divine consciousness, while QS. ‘Abasa highlights moral sensitivity, equality, empathy, and respect for human dignity within educational interactions. Together, these revelations articulate a holistic, integrative model of Islamic education that unites intellect, spirituality, and character formation. The study implies that contemporary Islamic education should integrate cognitive excellence with ethical cultivation to address modern challenges such as moral disorientation and technocratic learning. However, the study is limited by its reliance on textual analysis and its focus on two Qur’anic passages. Future research is recommended to include empirical studies and broader Qur’anic themes to enhance practical applicability across diverse educational contexts.

Abstract

This study examines the obligation of hijab through the lens of character education by comparatively analyzing the interpretations of classical and contemporary Muslim scholars. Employing a qualitative comparative-analytical library research design, the study analyzes key Qur’anic verses on hijab alongside authoritative classical and modern tafsir works to explore their normative, ethical, and pedagogical dimensions. The findings reveal a fundamental continuity between classical and contemporary scholars regarding the obligatory status of hijab as grounded in the Qur’an and Sunnah, while also demonstrating a significant shift in interpretative emphasis. Classical exegesis primarily adopts a textual-normative approach focused on legal obligation, bodily coverage, and social protection within early Islamic contexts. In contrast, contemporary interpretations extend this framework by emphasizing character formation, spiritual consciousness, moral agency, identity construction, and contextual adaptability in modern societies. The study further identifies core character education values embedded in the hijab discourse, including obedience, modesty, self-dignity, piety, self-discipline, social responsibility, and ethical identity. These values position hijab as an integrative moral practice rather than a purely formalistic or symbolic requirement. The implications of this research highlight the potential of integrative exegesis to inform inclusive, empowering, and context-sensitive Islamic education that frames hijab as a meaningful ethical choice. The study is limited by its textual focus and lack of empirical investigation. Future research is recommended to incorporate lived experiences, educational practices, and interdisciplinary perspectives to enrich contemporary hijab discourse.

Abstract

Abstract

This study examines the economic independence of pesantren (Islamic boarding schools) in responding to the challenges of economic globalization, using Pondok Pesantren Darul Falah Amtsilati Jepara as a case study. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach with field observations, interviews, and document analysis, the research explores how pesantren develop sustainable economic models grounded in Islamic values. The findings reveal that Darul Falah Amtsilati has successfully established a self-reliant economic ecosystem through diversified business units such as Amtsilati Water, Amtsilati Press, agriculture, livestock farming, and retail enterprises. These activities not only finance the pesantren’s operations but also foster entrepreneurship among students and the surrounding community. The study highlights the relevance of Dependency Theory in explaining pesantren’s historical reliance on external funding and shows how internal economic empowerment can reduce structural dependency. The pesantren’s economic independence model integrates education with entrepreneurship, aligns with Sharia economic principles, and strengthens community empowerment. Therefore, pesantren can serve as alternative Islamic economic institutions capable of promoting sustainable development and self-reliance within the context of global economic transformation. Abstract
