Abstract

Textbook plays important role in teaching English. Yet, not all textbook is appropriately meet to the students’ needs and knowledge level. The material for EFL is totally different to Native speaker of English. One of the ways matching students’ needs and textbook is by doing textbook evaluation. This research is aimed at discussing textbooks that are used by the teacher in English Foreign Language (EFL). The textbooks that have been chosen are English for Everyday English for Hospitality Professionals by Lawrence, J. Zwier and Nigel Caplan (2007) and English for Work (2003) by Ian Badger. Both of them are ESP textbooks where they are taught in a foreign language class. The purpose of this research is to know how much Everyday English for Hospitality Professionals and English for Work textbook used in college meets the criteria of good EFL textbook. The research design is a descriptive-evaluative. The procedure of analyzing the data starts by analyzing the data based on EFL evaluation criteria, then finding out how much each items meet the criteria of good EFL textbook and concluding the result. The research result revealed that most parts of the textbooks are appropriately met to the students’ needs. Most of the material stated inside of the textbooks covered students’ knowledge level and relevant for the field of study. Keywords: evaluation, foreign learner class, textbooks

Abstract

PENILAIAN OTENTIK KETERAMPILAN BERBICARA UNTUK KELAS I SEKOLAH LANJUTAN TINGKAT PERTAMAAbstractAuthentic assessment plays an important role in the process of learning evaluation. It covers three domains namely affective, psychomotor, and cognitive domains. To assess students’ speaking skill, teachers must apply appropriate authentic assessment to the students. This paper presents the result of a study on developing authentic assessment of speaking skill of English at grade 1 MTsN Batusangkar. Data were obtained through questionnaire, interview, validation checklist and practicality checklist. There were 32 students as the respondents. This paper revealed that there are six authentic assessment models appropriate for grade 1 Junior High School, they are role play, information gap, picture talks, brief question and answer, narrating sequences, and pair dialogue. It is suggested that teachers may apply the six authentic assessment models in assessing students’ speaking skill at grade 1 Junior High School. Key Words: authentic assessment, development model, speaking skill, junior high school.AbstrakPenilaian otentik memainkan peran penting dalam proses evaluasi pembelajaran. Penilaian otentik mencakup tiga domain yaitu: domain afektif, psikomotor, dan kognitif. Untuk menilai kemampuan berbicara siswa, guru harus menerapkan penilaian otentik yang sesuai dengan siswa. Artikel ini menyajikan hasil penelitian tentang pengembangan penilaian otentik untuk keterampilan berbicara di kelas I MTsN Batusangkar. Data diperoleh melalui kuesioner, wawancara, ceklis validasi dan ceklis kepraktisan. Ada 32 siswa sebagai responden. Makalah ini mengungkapkan bahwa ada enam model penilaian otentik yaitu role play, information gap, picture talks, pertanyaan singkat dan jawaban, narasi urutan dan dialog pasangan. Hal ini sangat disarankan bagi para guru untuk menerapkan enam model penilaian otentik dalam menilai kemampuan berbicara siswa.

Abstract

Reading material that is contextually and academically appropriate for students' needs is an important component of teaching English. In reality, some of the reading material used by the lecturer is inadequate for the needs of the students. This research developed reading material that contextually applies to Islamic colleges and is appropriately suitable for students’ knowledge. To achieve the aims, the research design was a research and development (R and D). The respondents of the research were 52 students of the English Teaching Department STAIN Mandailing Natal. They were chosen to use a technique called purposive random sampling. As part of the research procedures, it carried out five phases: (1) conducting a need analysis with the student, (2) designing reading material based on Islamic values, (3) developing reading material based on Islamic values. (4) obtaining expert opinions on the validity of reading material (5) determining the feasibility of reading material. The research findings show students need reading material that covers: Islamic context in their reading materials since they study in Islamic-based campuses and stay in most Islamic-society regions. Then, students need reading material that is suitable for students’ knowledge level for text, illustration, pictures, even the example of reading material. The students also need an Islamic vocabulary in reading material, which may use them to apply in daily life. Expert validated this model of reading material and it yielded as valid and practical to be applied in reading subject specifically for English Teaching Department students of STAIN Mandailing Natal. After conducting dissemination to students for the practicality, this reading material is practical and applicable to be used for reading subjects. We can state that this reading material applies to lecturers and matches students’ needs appropriately.

Abstract

It is obvious that the use of learning strategy is a crucial element for EFL in studying English. Learning strategy becomes a tool for language learner in order to enhance their learning. An active application of language learning helps students in managing their own learning by developing language skill, increasing confidence and improving autonomous learning. Each of learners has different strategy to be applied in their classroom and daily life. The main objective of this study is to investigate the strategy of learning English conducted by the first year students of English teaching department of STAIN Mandailing Natal. This study was quantitative approach which carried out on the sample of 30 participants. All those participants are the first year students of English Teaching Department State College for Islamic Studies (STAIN) Mandailing Natal, Sumatera Utara. To obtain the data, researcher used two instruments namely: questionnaire and interview. The questionnaire consists of 26 questions which taken from blue print of strategy inventory for language learning (SILL). Interview is used to obtain deep and detail information about the application of learners’ learning strategy. Based on the data analysis, it is reasonable to state that most of the learners used metacognitive strategy in learning English as foreign language.

Abstract

Assessing writing is one of the difficulties most English teachers face. Compared to other English skills, writing is generally regarded as the most complicated skill. The media for assessing writing should preferably cover several principles to face this challenge, one of which is authenticity. Authentic assessment is a form of assessment that connects learners to actual life and promotes the fair exploration of three domains. The main objective of this research is to design authentic assessment model for assessing writing skill at junior high school students. This research utilized Research and Development approach which carried out the first years students of Islamic Junior High school (MTsN) Batusangkar and two English teachers as participants. In gaining data, researcher used questionnaire and structured interview. The questionnaire consisted of 30 question related to the authentic assessment. In order to dig deep data related to writing assessment for junior high school students, researchers used unstructured questions. The finding revealed that the personal report is ideally an effective authentic evaluation model for assessing students' writing skills, especially for junior high school students.

Abstract

Kemampuan berbahasa Inggris di era globalisasi ini diperlukan oleh para siswa dan juga para santri. Akan tetapi dalam pelaksanaannya pembelajaran bahasa Inggris di pondok pesantren di Mandailing Natal belum maksimal. Pengabdian ini bertujuan untuk memberikan pelatihan public speaking di pondok pesantren dengan harapan mereka mempunyai kecakapan yang memadai nantinya. Sehingga mampu mereka aplikasikan dalam dunia nyata seperti dalam pekerjaan atau di masyarakat. Subjek dari pengabdian ini adalah pondok pesantren yakni Bi’tsatul Islamiyah dan Daarul Ikhlas di Dalan Lidang dengan jumlah peserta 20 orang masing-masing pesantren. Pengabdian ini menggunakan metode CSL (Community Service Learning) yang melibatkan social community dan kampus secara aktif. Setelah dilakukan pelatihan, sebanyak 60 persen kemampuan public speaking santri meningkat. Selain itu mereka sudah memahami teknik dasar dan aplikasi nyata public speaking. Hasil pengabdian ini berguna bagi para santri secara personal maupun karier mereka nanti.

Abstract

In this digital era, the emergence of technology for language instruction is unquestionable. Technology helps students learn a target language more quickly, easily, and happily than traditional methods. The non-English department requires extra inspiration, motivation, and a unique approach. As an ICT platform, Padlet is regarded as a creative medium for English learning. This study provides light on how the padlet application can be used to assist and motivate non-English Department students to learn English. This study utilized a quantitative methodology with a sample of 38 people. These participants were all first-year non-English Department Mandailing Natal, STAIN Mandailing Natal Sumatera Utara. The PIAUD (early childhood Islamic education) department had 19 participants, while the Perbankan Syariah (Islamic banking) department had 19 students. For data collection, the researcher utilized a questionnaire. The questionnaires collect baseline information regarding the use of padlet as an innovative medium for English learning. This study found that the majority of students (80%) believe padlet to be a suitable and dynamic medium for learning English, and students are motivated to study English. Abstract

The main focus of this research is to investigate corrective feedback made by the English teacher during classroom interaction. The study was qualitative research. The data in this study were the utterances that spoken by teacher and student during the classroom activity. The data were collected through a record where the writer himself recorded the utterances during teaching learning process a ninety-minute in duration. In this study, the teacher is an English teacher who teaches at grade XI SMA Payakumbuh. The data were analyzed by qualitative approach, writer explained corrective feedback types that happened in classroom interaction. There are six types of corrective feedback occurred in the classroom interaction at SMA 1 Payakumbuh namely: recast, repetition, clarification request, explicit correction, elicitation, and paralinguistic correction. Recast, clarification request and elicitation are the most corrective feedback applied by teacher in the classroom interaction.

Abstract

This article investigated how AI-based English learning applications contribute to English morphological awareness. This study involved 62 participants of university students. A quantitative approach was employed. Data collection was conducted by distributing questionnaires via Google Forms. Participants completed three types of questionnaires; (1) students’ habits in using AI-based English learning platforms, (2) Students’ morphological awareness, and (3) compositional test where participants were asked to make sentences based on provided words. The results show that the majority of participants used AI-based English applications for learning English. Additionally, the majority of them said they understood morphology when utilizing the English language. Likewise, the significance value for students’ habit in using AI-based English learning applications and students’ English morphological awareness is 0.000 and the Pearson correlation is 0.464. This means there is a moderate and positive correlation between students' morphological awareness and their usage of AI-based English learning platforms. Ultimately, the majority of students demonstrated a positive degree of morphological skill in English in their compositional test responses using the provided English vocabulary.

Abstract

Innovative teaching approaches that encourage active learning are becoming more and more popular in the ever-changing educational landscape. One such paradigm that has attracted a lot of interest is co-creation, an educational strategy that stresses student engagement and collaborative learning. This study aims to investigate the implementation of co-creation in teaching Basic Grammar, Basic Writing and Translation. Then, this research also aims to analyze the effect of the implementation of co-creation in the classroom. The study utilizes qualitative research methodology and was conducted at STAIN Mandailing Natal, focusing on students enrolled in the English Language Education Program. Data was collected through focus group discussions, observations, and interviews. The findings highlight various co-creation techniques used, such as peer feedback, collaborative projects, and grammar prompts, which have resulted in positive outcomes for students, including increased engagement, collaboration, autonomous learning, and critical thinking skills. Overall, the incorporation of co-creation in the classroom has enhanced the academic experience for students in the English Language Education Program. Further exploration is recommended to understand its full potential and applicability across different educational settings and subjects. Besides, future researchers could focus on quantifying the effects of co-creation on student outcomes and delve into potential challenges and solutions in its implementation.
