Abstract

      Microorganisms that often contaminate fishery products were from bacteria groups. Some spesies of bacteria were harmful to human health because they can cause disease and even death in humans, such as Escherichia coli and Salmonella. Therefore its were needed for quarantine and microbiological examination of fishery products as an effort to prevent the spread of disease in humans. The aims of this study were to identify the contamination of E. coli and Salmonella bacteria in fishery products. A total eight samples of fishery products tested consist of canned dan frozen products using conventional methods based on ISO 16649-3: 2015 for E. coli and ISO 01-2332.2-2006 for Salmonella. The results showed that one from the six fishery products tested were frozen boiled tuna that positively E. coli and no fishery product sample was identified with Salmonella.

Abstract

Disease is one of the main problems that have a major impact on aquaculture activities. Diseases in fish generally occur due to an imbalance of interactions between fish, pathogens, and the culture environment. Poor environmental quality can increase stress on fish and increase the pathogenicity of pathogens. In aquaculture activities, it is important to prevent disease in fish to avoid large economic losses. Based on the result of the initial survey, it was found that the problems faced by fish farmers in the Genteng area were the lack of knowledge in identifying the early syndrome of fish disease and the weakness in monitoring the quality of water for cultivation. This program aimed to provide the fish farmer with an introduction to disease kinds, training in environmental health management, and mentoring activities for aquaculture activities so that fish diseases can be prevented as early as possible. This programs were carried out on August 18, 2022, which was attended by 20 fish farmers in the Genteng area and continued with regular assistance for one month. Based on the result, there was an increase in understanding of the identification of parasites in fish, microscope utilization, and water quality test. In general, this programs received a positive response and enthusiasm from training participant, which was accompanied by an increase in participants’ knowledge about how to identify fish disease and water quality test.

Abstract

The potential of Pulau Santen, which has been known as a tourism beach, is increasingly visible with the large amount of infrastructure and tourism built by the local government. This was done as an effort to promote Pulau Santen as one of the best natural tourism centers in Banyuwangi. The community in Pulau Santen must be prepared as a group that is aware of the potential of their village and the sustainability of its natural tourism. Pulau Santen is also categorized as a location which every year frequently used for sea turtle nests that land on the Banyuwangi coastal areas. This is actually very contrary to the natural habits of sea turtles which prefer to make nests in quiet places without any disturbance from sound, light, and humans. Because the place used as a natural nest is a busy tourist spot, local residents must also be given insight regarding the protection of sea turtles that land on the coast of Pulau Santen as one of the wild animals protected by the Conservation Law in Indonesia. The purpose of this activity is to strengthen the awareness of Pulau Santen tourism awareness groups regarding the important role of communities around the coast to participate in wildlife conservation and their ecosystems. Through the community service activities that have been carried out, the sustainability of the program is needed so that a model of a conservation education tourist spot is formed that has the potential to improve the economy of the surrounding communities and the conservation of biodiversity in the area.

Abstract

Coffea canephora or robusta coffee was known as a medicinal plant that admitted various biological properties. However, its application as a medicinal plant in fish disease treatment has not been reported. This study aimed to investigate the effect of dietary robusta coffee leaf (RCL) extract on the survival rate and hematology of Cyprinus carpio infected by Aeromonas hydrophila. Two hundred fish were randomly divided into five treatment groups consisting of uninfected fish (UF), infected fish (IF), and a diet supplemented with different concentrations of RCL extract (30%, 40%, and 50%). The negative control group was injected by NaCl 0.9% and other treatment groups were injected by A. hydrophila. Feeding treatment was carried out for 7 days after clinical symptoms appeared. The results showed that RCL extract increases the survival rate and hematological parameters (number of erythrocytes, hemoglobin, and lymphocytes) significantly (P0.05). The highest survival rate (100%) was recorded in groups that accepted 50% of RCL extract. This current study indicates that RCL extract could be considered a potent medicinal plant for treating fish disease caused by A. hydrophila at the optimum dose of 50%.Keywords:AeromonasCoffea canephoraExtractHematologyCyprinus carpio

Abstract

In Banyuwangi, Indonesia, where the vast potential of natural resources remains largely untapped optimally, the community partnership program (CPP) was introduced to enhance freshwater fish production, with a specific focus on catfish farming in the Muncul fish farm. The region's catfish production, the largest among consumer fish commodities, had been hampered by traditional and semi-intensive methods, limited facilities, disease risks, and uncertain market conditions. To address these challenges, the CPP employed a participatory approach, fostering a close relationship between the community development team and partner groups. Through scientific problem-solving discussions, valuable input from partners, and active participation in decision-making, catfish farmers were empowered. The central innovation of applying humic acid in a bucket fish farming system significantly improved catfish productivity and profitability. As a result, partners gained knowledge and skills in intensive bucket fish farming, substantially increasing their productivity and income. To further expand the benefits of this program, promoting urban farming concepts, especially the bucket fish farming system, should be encouraged to engage more individuals with limited space in small-scale aquaculture for food security and income generation.

Abstract

AbstrakLamun merupakan tanaman berbiji terbuka yang mampu tumbuh dan beradaptasi dengan lingkungan bersalinitas tinggi serta dapat berasosiasi dengan benthos. Keberadaan lamun di perairan merupakan salah satu indikator tingkat kesuburan dan produktivitas perairan. Terdapat perbedaan dominansi antara musim hujan dan musim kemarau, sehingga enelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi dan menghitung dominansi dan keanekaragaman lamun dan makrozoobenthos pada musim pancaroba di Pantai Bama, TN Baluran, Situbondo. Metode penelitian yang digunakan yaitu line transect quadran dengan 5 line transek quadran yang masing-masingnya dipasang 5 plot transek. Ditemukan jenis lamun yang memiliki nilai kelimpahan tertinggi di Pantai Bama, TN Baluran pada musim pancaroba yaitu C. serrulata dengan nilai 48,90% , dan makrozoobenthos dari genus Holothuria dengan nilai 52,06%. Nilai Indeks dominansi (D) mengkategorikan Pantai Bama, TN Baluran dalam perairan dengan dominansi sedang. Sedangkan berdasarkan Indeks keanekaragaman (H') mengkategorikan Pantai Bama, TN Baluran dalam perairan dengan keanekaragaman rendah. Musim peralihan berpengaruh terhadap jenis, kelimpahan relatif, indeks dominansi dan indeks keanekaragaman lamun dan makrozoobenthos di Pantai Bama, TN Baluran dibandingkan musim kemarau dan hujan. Perlu dilakukan survei secara berkala untuk mengetahui keanekaragaman organisme yang berkaitan dengan produktivitas perairan. AbstractSeagrass is the one of plants that can grow and adaptataion with high salinity environment and associated with benthos. Seagrass presence that indicate the productivity and prosperity in waters environtment. Found a different dominance between rainy season and dry season, so The aims of this study to identify and count dominance and diversity of seagrass and macrozoobenthos on the transition season in Bama Beach, TN Baluran, Situbondo. The method was used is line transect quadran with 5 quadran each of which installed 5 plot transect. Seagrass species was founded that have the highest abundance values in Bama Beach, TN Baluran the transitional season is C. serrulata with a value of 48.90%, and the macrozoobenthos that found from genus Holothuria with a value of 52.06%. Dominance index value (D) categorize Bama Beach, TN Baluran with moderate dominance. While based on the diversity index (H ') categorizes Bama Beach, TN Baluran with low diversity. Transitional seasons affect the type, relative abundance, dominance index and seagrass diversity index and macrozoobenthos in Bama Beach, TN Baluran than the dry and rainy seasons. Needed to investigate the diversity of organism that related to primary produktivity.

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the vibriocidal potency of Moringa leaf ethanol extract (MLEE) and assess the effectiveness of dietary supplementation of MLEE on Pacific white shrimp growth performance. A vibriocidal activity was performed using disk diffusion and tube dilution methods. The results showed Vibrio parahaemolyticus was more susceptible than Vibrio harveyii with an inhibitory zone of 11.30 to 22.90 mm. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of MLEE against V. parahaemolyticus was recorded at 12.5%, similar to V. harveyii. The effectiveness of MLEE on diet was monitored by the growth of the shrimps for 40 days of culture. Shrimps with an average initial weight of 2.50±0.05 g were acclimatized in 10 days. The MLEE was administered to the shrimps at different concentrations i.e., 10%, 15%, 20%, and 25%. The control diet was prepared without MLEE supplementation. After 40 days of culture, the shrimps fed with 10% of MLEE had the best growth. This study reported that MLEE potentially become vibriocidal agents. However, the administration on shrimp had no beneficial effect on its growth performance.

Abstract

Carassius auratus is one of the potential ornamental freshwater fish in Indonesia. The potential of this fish increases along with the dominance of the colors produced during cultivation. We have demonstrated to treat differences in the light spectrum to increase the brightness of the colors. Completely randomized design with 5 treatments and 4 replications as the design i.e., (P1) negative control with no LED, (P2) positive control using white LED light and a room light intensity, (P3) red LED, (P4) green LED, and (P5) blue LED. We reported that the red LED was the light spectrum that produced the best treatment to increase the color brightness and growth of goldfish. The brightness level of the color in the P3 treatment was 63,04% as measured by Adobe Photoshop; using the M-TCF method, it was 8,94% body color, 9,37% dorsal fin, and 9,31% tail fin. Meanwhile, the best specific growth rate were found in P5 followed by P3 treatment in a row of 5,33 ± 0,66b, 3,46 ± 0,57ab, respectively. The red color spectrum produced the best pigmentation but the blue color spectrum was the best for the growth of C. auratus.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine chloramphenicol residues and bacterial contamination (Aerobic Plate Count-APC, Escherichia coli count, Salmonella sp., and Vibrio cholerae) in farmed African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) that are marketed in Banyuwangi, Indonesia. A total of ninety samples of C. gariepinus were collected from several markets in Banyuwangi, namely, Kertosari, Blambangan, and Banyuwangi Kota. Using standard procedures, APC, E. coli count, Salmonella sp., V. cholerae, and chloramphenicol residues were determined. 36.37% of samples from Kertosari markets; 23.33% of samples from Banyuwangi Kota markets; and 16.67% of samples from Blambangan markets contained chloramphenicol residues, but less than 0.3 ppb. Only 40% of samples from Kertosari markets, 36.67% of samples from Banyuwangi Kota markets, and 26.67% of samples from Blambangan markets were contaminated by E. coli, but were less than 3 MPNg-1. The highest APC was from Banyuwangi Kota, followed by Kertosari and Blambangan. No samples were contaminated by Salmonella sp. and V. cholerae from any of the markets, and there was no significant difference between all markets in APC, E. coli count, or chloramphenicol residues. All farmed catfish marketed in Banyuwangi were safe to eat because no samples exceeded the maximum chloramphenicol residue and bacterial contaminant standards. Further studies are needed to detect other antibiotic residues used in aquaculture, including tetracycline, sulphonamide, enrofloxacin, and nitrofuran.

Abstract

Kuhli loach (Pangio kuhlii) a popular ornamental freshwater fish species with economic potential, originating from Sumatra, Kalimantan, Java, and Malaysia. The kuhli loach's appeal lies in its vibrant colors and distinctive eel-like body. This study aims to explores the sexual primary and secondary characteristics of the kuhli loach. Conducted at Universitas Airlangga in Banyuwangi, Indonesia, the study involved a thorough analysis of 50 kuhli loaches, evenly split between males and females. Morphological observations revealed significant differences (p < 0.05), such as the elongated body and expanded abdominal region in females, suggesting adaptations for reproduction. Internal examinations, including peritoneal dissections and histological analysis, unveiled distinct stages of spermatogenesis in males and ovarian development in females, providing insights into the reproductive cycle. Meristic and morphometric analyses identified noteworthy differences in pectoral fin rays, suggesting potential roles in reproductive behavior, while other traits exhibited similarity between genders. This study contributes to the understanding of kuhli loach ecology and reproductive biology, highlighting the importance of addressing sustainability concerns arising from the continuous exploitation of wild populations. This study serves as a foundational step towards advancing reproductive improvement in fish and supports the conservation of this unique ornamental fish species, with implications for aquaculture practices and economic considerations.
