Abstract

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a chronic disease that requires good management, including blood sugar control through adherence to oral antidiabetic drugs. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between medication adherence and blood sugar control in T2DM patients at Mamajang Community Health Center, February 2025. The method used was observational analytics with a cross-sectional approach. The research subjects were 57 T2DM patients who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate analysis to test the relationship between medication adherence and blood sugar control. The results showed that adherence to treatment was significantly associated with HbA1c values (p = 0.042), but there was no significant relationship with fasting blood glucose levels (p = 0.360). This study concluded that although medication adherence affects HbA1c control, other factors such as diet, physical activity, and stress also play a role in blood sugar control. A more holistic approach to type 2 diabetes mellitus management is needed to improve optimal blood sugar management.

Abstract

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers, with complications such as pleural effusion potentially worsening patient prognosis. This study aims to analyze the relationship between the neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and pleural effusion occurrence in breast cancer patients at RSUP Prof Dr. R.D. Kandou Manado. The study used a cross-sectional retrospective design, involving 196 breast cancer patients divided into two groups: those with and without pleural effusion. The results showed that while there is a tendency for higher NLR in patients with pleural effusion, other factors like cancer stage and supraclavicular lymph node enlargement play a more dominant role in predicting pleural effusion. NLR was not found to be a strong biomarker for independently predicting pleural effusion. This study provides insights into the potential of NLR for predicting complications in breast cancer patients, but further research is needed to identify more sensitive biomarkers for pleural effusion prediction.

Abstract

Malaria is still a problem in many places, caused by a parasite Plasmodium falciparum spreaded by mosquitoes. Haliclona sp. is a sea sponge that contains active compounds, some of which are Manzamine and Haliclonacyclamine A, and have antimalarial activity. This study aimed to find the potential effects of different active compounds on the sponge Haliclona sp. on the growth of Plasmodium falciparum based on in silico. This was an experimental study using in silico method. The materials were prepared and taken from the PubChem web, predicted the potential of compounds, predicted pathways using Discovery Studio version 21.1.1, molecular docking using Molegro virtual Docker 5.0, predicted ADME using SWISS ADME, and predicted toxicity via Protox web. The results showed that Haliclona sp. contained several active compounds, namely Manzamine and Haliclonacyclamine A. The study of the active compounds in Haliclona sp. showed that there was a link between the Plasmodium falciparum enzymes. The PfTK and PfDHODH enzymes are responsible for breaking down malaria parasites. In the ADME prediction analysis of the active compounds contained in Haliclona sp., Haliclonacyclamine A can meet Lipinski's criteria. The last test performed was a toxicity test where it was found that Haliclonacyclamine.

Abstract

Melasma is a common hyperpigmentation disorder that typically appears on sun-exposed areas of the face and is often associated with Ultraviolet (UV) exposure and hormonal factors. This study aimed to examine the relationship between UV exposure and melasma incidence among outdoor workers at Minasa Maupa Central Market, considering hormonal contraceptive use as a confounding factor. A cross-sectional design was used, involving 32 female respondents selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected via observation and validated questionnaires, then analyzed using univariate and bivariate Chi-Square tests. Results indicated a significant relationship between prolonged UV exposure (?4 hours) and melasma occurrence (p=0.022), as well as between hormonal contraceptive use and melasma (p=0.028). However, no significant interaction was found between UV exposure duration and contraceptive use (p=0.849). These findings highlight that UV exposure and hormonal contraceptive use independently contribute to melasma risk. Skin protection education and medical monitoring for contraceptive users are recommended preventive strategies. Future research using longitudinal design and direct UV intensity measurement is suggested to enhance understanding and accuracy.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a major global health problem, affecting over 500 million people worldwide. Understanding its pathophysiology and complications requires suitable animal models. Zebrafish (Danio rerio) has emerged as a promising model for diabetes research. This review aims to synthesize current research on the use of zebrafish as an experimental model for DM and its microvascular complications, focusing on induction methods, research applications, and observed outcomes. A literature review was conducted to investigate those variables. Zebrafish hyperglycemia can be induced through glucose immersion, overfeeding, chemical agents, and genetic modification. These models have been successfully used to study drug testing, molecular profiling, and diabetic complications. Observed variables included glucose levels, enzyme activity, gene expression, histopathological changes, and behavioral responses. Results demonstrated strong parallels with human diabetic pathology, including vascular alterations, proteinuria, renal apoptosis, and neuropathic dysfunction. Zebrafish provides a strong, cost-effective, and relevant model for diabetes research. Despite limitations such as physiological differences and methodological variability, they offer valuable insights into metabolic dysregulation and complications, while serving as an efficient platform for drug discovery.

Abstract

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease that commonly affects the elderly. Hyperglycemia can accelerate cerebral vascular damage and increase the risk of cognitive impairment. Random blood glucose (RBG) testing is frequently used to monitor glycemic control in daily clinical practice. The purpose of this study was to determine the correlation between random blood glucose levels and cognitive function in elderly patients with type 2 DM. This was an observational analytical study with a cross-sectional design. Subjects were elderly patients with type 2 DM. Random blood glucose levels were measured using an enzymatic method, while cognitive function was measured using the Mini-Cog questionnaire. Statistical analysis used the spearman/pearson corerelation test. Results: The majority of patients with BG levels ?200 mg/dL had lower cognitive impairment scores than those with BG levels <200 mg/dL. There was a significant positive correlation between random blood glucose levels and cognitive scores (r=0.445;p<0.001). So it can be concluded that high random blood sugar levels are associated with decreased cognitive function in elderly people with type 2 diabetes. GDS examintaion can be an early indicator for detecting the risk of cognitive impairment in elderly type 2 diabetes patients.
