Abstract

Interpreting is an essential skill for students in English Education Programs, particularly in multilingual contexts such as Indonesia where English is learned as a foreign language. In academic and professional settings, students are required to interpret spoken English into Indonesian accurately and fluently in real time. However, many students still experience difficulties that hinder their interpreting performance. This study aims to analyze the types of difficulties faced by students in English–Indonesian interpreting and to examine how these difficulties affect their performance. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method involving five seventh-semester students of the English Education Program at Universitas Muhammadiyah Makassar who had taken or were taking an interpreting course. The participants were selected purposively based on their interpreting experience. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using qualitative procedures consisting of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings show that students mainly experience linguistic difficulties, particularly limited vocabulary and complex sentence structures. Vocabulary problems include academic vocabulary, polysemy, and idiomatic expressions, while sentence structure difficulties involve long sentences, passive constructions, and dense noun phrases. These difficulties increase students’ cognitive load and negatively affect accuracy and fluency. This study concludes that linguistic competence plays a crucial role in English–Indonesian interpreting, and interpreting instruction should emphasize vocabulary development and strategies for processing complex sentence structures.

Abstract

This study aims to improve students’ learning outcomes through the implementation of a differentiated learning model in Islamic Education for Grade VII A at SMP Nasional Makassar. The research employed a Classroom Action Research (CAR) design conducted in two cycles, namely Cycle I and Cycle II. Each cycle consisted of planning, action, observation, and reflection stages. The research subjects were 32 students of Grade VII A. Data were collected through observation of teacher and student activities, learning achievement tests, and documentation. Data analysis was carried out using descriptive quantitative and qualitative techniques to examine improvements in both the learning process and learning outcomes. The results indicate that the implementation of the differentiated learning model significantly improved students’ engagement and learning outcomes. In the pre-cycle stage, only 31% of students achieved learning mastery, with an average score of 62.35. After the application of differentiated learning in Cycle I, learning mastery increased to 59% with an average score of 76.41. Furthermore, in Cycle II, which emphasized product differentiation, learning mastery showed a more substantial improvement, reaching 87.5% with an average score of 88.13. In addition, observation results revealed an increase in students’ learning readiness and participation, from 52% in Cycle I to 86% in Cycle II. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the differentiated learning model is effective in improving students’ learning outcomes in Islamic Education for Grade VII A at SMP Nasional Makassar.

Abstract

Penelitian ini berangkat dari rendahnya kemampuan siswa dalam membedakan huruf kapital dan huruf kecil pada pelajaran Bahasa Indonesia, khususnya di Gugus 2 Kecamatan Soyo Jaya. Permasalahan utama yang dihadapi dalam penelitian ini adalah minimnya variasi media pembelajaran yang efektif untuk membantu siswa memahami perbedaan bentuk huruf. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menganalisis keefektifan model pembelajaran Direct Instruction dengan bantuan media kartu huruf dalam meningkatkan kemampuan pengenalan huruf kapital dan kecil, dibandingkan dengan model pembelajaran tradisional. Metode yang diterapkan dalam penelitian ini adalah pendekatan kuantitatif dengan desain eksperimen semu. Populasi yang diteliti adalah seluruh siswa kelas rendah di Gugus 2 Kecamatan Soyo Jaya, dan sampel penelitian diambil dari SD Negeri Uebangke. Alat pengumpul data meliputi tes pengenalan huruf (pretest dan posttest) serta lembar observasi. Untuk analisis data, digunakan uji-t (Independent Sample T-test) guna mengevaluasi perbedaan signifikan antara kelompok yang menerima perlakuan dan kelompok yang tidak. Hasil studi memperlihatkan bahwa penggunaan model Pengajaran Langsung yang didukung dengan media kartu huruf jauh lebih berhasil daripada model tradisional. Ini terlihat dari nilai rata-rata posttest yang lebih tinggi pada kelompok eksperimen, serta hasil uji signifikansi yang berada di bawah 0,05. Penggunaan media kartu huruf dalam model instruksi langsung memberikan stimulus visual yang memudahkan siswa membedakan struktur huruf kapital dan kecil secara konkret. Kesimpulannya, model Direct Instruction berbantuan kartu huruf direkomendasikan sebagai solusi efektif untuk meningkatkan literasi dasar siswa di sekolah dasar.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effect of digital book utilization on the literacy interest of fifth-grade students at Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Ma’had Al-Zaytun. Literacy interest is an important foundation in shaping students’ academic success and critical thinking skills, especially in boarding school environments with limited access to printed reading materials. This research employed a quantitative approach using a quasi-experimental method with a one-group pretest–posttest design. The research subjects consisted of 38 fifth-grade students. Data were collected through literacy interest tests administered before and after the intervention, as well as questionnaires to support quantitative findings. The data analysis included normality tests, homogeneity tests, descriptive statistics, and paired sample t-tests. The results showed that the data were normally distributed and homogeneous. The descriptive analysis indicated an increase in the average literacy interest score from 47.74 in the pretest to 52.97 in the posttest. Furthermore, the paired sample t-test revealed a significant difference between pretest and posttest results with a significance value of 0.000 (p < 0.05). These findings indicate that the utilization of digital books has a significant positive effect on improving students’ literacy interest. Therefore, digital books can be an effective alternative learning resource to foster literacy culture among elementary school students, particularly in boarding school settings.

Abstract

Science learning in elementary schools still faces challenges regarding low student engagement due to a lack of variety in instructional methods. This issue impacts conceptual understanding, particularly on the topic of changes in the states of matter. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of implementing the Think Pair Share (TPS) learning model in enhancing the engagement and learning outcomes of IV elementary school students. The methodology employed is descriptive research with a qualitative approach. The subjects of this study involved fourth-grade students. Data collection techniques included observation, interviews, and documentation. The results indicate that the application of the Think Pair Share model successfully increased students' active participation in the learning process, fostered critical thinking skills, and assisted students in better understanding the concept of changes in the states of matter. Furthermore, student interactions and the learning atmosphere became more conducive. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the Think Pair Share learning model is effective for teaching Science, specifically regarding changes in the states of matter, in IV elementary school classrooms.

Abstract

The role of Islamic Religious Education (PAI) teachers within the scope of primary education is vital in shaping students' religious character. Religious character is typically identified through several aspects, such as education, knowledge, competence, and awareness in implementing religious culture. Various studies on religious character education have been conducted; research using a qualitative approach aims to form students' religious character in the digital era. The method used in this research is qualitative and descriptive with a field approach. Interviews and direct practice were also applied in this study. The research subjects targeted 30 fifth-grade students at SDN Bandarjo 03 Ungaran, located at Jl. Gatot Subroto No.123a, Bandarjo Village, West Ungaran District, Semarang Regency, Central Java Province, 50511. This research took place for one month (30 days), starting from December 15, 2025, to January 15, 2026. Data collection was carried out through documentative literature study, observation, and interviews. The literature study was conducted by distributing questionnaires and holding photography sessions. Observation was carried out by collecting responses from the questionnaire results. Interviews were conducted by asking a series of questions to identify student character. As supporting data, direct practice in the aspect of discipline—such as cultivating timely prayers and wearing modest clothing (covering the aurat)—was also considered in this study. The results showed that the role of PAI teachers in forming students' religious character at SD Negeri 03 Ungaran through literature, interviews, observation, and direct practice methods enabled students to apply Islamic religious values such as discipline, diligence, honesty, responsibility, and others, which serve as a solid foundation for students in facing modernization. These results indicate that the method is highly effective and feasible for practical application in the field.

Abstract

Science literacy is an essential competency that needs to be developed from elementary school, particularly in planning and evaluating scientific investigations as emphasized in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) framework. However, learning science in elementary schools is often still dominated by conceptual teaching, resulting in limited opportunities for students to engage in scientific investigations. This study aimed to analyze the ability of fifth-grade elementary school students to plan and evaluate scientific investigations on the topic of the respiratory system. The study employed a quantitative descriptive method and was conducted at an elementary school in Semarang Regency. The participants were all 54 fifth-grade students, selected using a saturated sampling technique. Data were collected using a multiple-choice test developed based on PISA science literacy indicators, including identifying scientific questions, designing investigationsancang and evaluating investigations, interpreting data, and drawing conclusions. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics to obtain mean scores, percentages, and ability categories. The results showed that students’ ability to plan scientific investigations was in the moderate category with an average score of 70.74, while their ability to evaluate scientific investigations was in the good category with an average score of 83.10. These findings indicate that students are relatively better at interpreting data and drawing conclusions than at planning investigation procedures. Therefore, science learning in elementary schools should emphasize balanced scientific inquiry activities to enhance students’ science literacy skills in accordance with the PISA framework.

Abstract

This study aims to identify concepts of educational leadership with a focus on directive and instructional leadership models. Through a literature review, the study examines the essence and characteristics of both leadership models. A deep understanding of directive and instructional leadership is expected to make a positive contribution to the development of leadership practices in the field of education. The research method employed in this study is a literature review involving the analysis of recent and relevant literature on educational leadership, particularly in the context of directive and instructional leadership models. The results of the analysis are integrated to form a comprehensive understanding of the key aspects of both leadership models. The findings of this study indicate that directive leadership is a form of leadership that provides followers with clear expectations, schedules the tasks to be carried out, and offers specific guidance on how to complete those tasks. Meanwhile, instructional leadership focuses on students’ learning processes and outcomes through the professional empowerment of teachers. Abstract

This study analyzes the representation of otherness and gender discrimination in the series Blue Eye Samurai using John Fiske’s semiotic analysis. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, the research examines three levels of meaning: reality, representation, and ideology. The findings reveal that Mizu faces racial discrimination due to her mixed heritage, symbolizing Japan’s obsession with racial purity, while Akemi experiences gender oppression under patriarchal control as a political instrument. Through visual symbols, dialogue, and narrative structure, the series critiques social systems that marginalize difference and female autonomy

Abstract

This research is motivated by the low oral communication skills of group B children at Puri Cendekia Ies Kindergarten Benowo Surabaya, where many children still have difficulty expressing opinions, answering questions, and tend to be passive in class discussions. In addition, the school location has experienced an earthquake disaster requiring learning media that not only stimulates language, but also equips children with disaster mitigation knowledge from an early age. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of using the Mipami Puzzle media (earthquake mitigation) on children's oral communication skills. This media is designed to introduce the concept of earthquake disaster mitigation through interactive picture-making and storytelling activities. The research method used is quantitative with a Quasi-Experimental design (Nonequivalent Control Group Design). The study population involved all group B children at Puri Cendekia Ies Kindergarten, with a saturated sampling technique that divided subjects into experimental and control groups. Data collection was carried out through observation and tests in the form of pre-tests and post-tests. The results showed a significant effect of the use of the Mipami Puzzle media on improving children's oral communication skills. This is demonstrated through data analysis, which shows a significant difference in average achievement between the experimental and control groups. This media is effective in stimulating children's oral communication skills, including listening skills, asking questions, and conveying ideas or information coherently and clearly.
