Abstract

Diagnostic assessment plays a crucial role in identifying mathematics learning difficulties among elementary school students; however, its implementation continues to face various challenges and has never been synthesized comprehensively. This study aims to systematically review the implementation, diverse instruments, and domains of learning difficulties identified through diagnostic assessment in elementary school mathematics instruction. Following the PRISMA guidelines, a literature search was conducted in the Scopus, Web of Science, and ERIC databases, yielding 25 empirical studies indexed in Scopus for thematic analysis. The findings revealed three main themes. First, the implementation of diagnostic assessment is predominantly conducted at the beginning of instruction with teachers as the main actors; however, its effectiveness is constrained by low assessment literacy and the acceleration of digitalization in the post-pandemic era. Second, the range of instruments includes standardized written tests, error analysis, clinical interviews, performance-based assessment, and adaptive digital platforms, each with their respective strengths and limitations. Third, the identified domains of difficulty include conceptual difficulties with fractions and place value, procedural difficulties associated with mathematics anxiety, and problem-solving difficulties complicated by linguistic barriers. This study concludes that diagnostic assessment needs to be reconceptualized as a multidimensional practice that integrates cognitive, affective, and linguistic aspects. The implications emphasize the importance of enhancing teacher assessment literacy, developing hybrid instruments, and adapting context-sensitive technology to realize differentiated and equitable mathematics instruction in elementary schools.

Abstract

Mathematics anxiety is a significant affective factor hindering the numeracy achievement of elementary school students, however interventions have predominantly focused on cognitive aspects while neglecting the psychological dimension. This study aims to systematically synthesize strategies based on a humanistic approach that are effective in overcoming mathematics anxiety in elementary schools. This systematic literature review adopted the PRISMA 2020 protocol, searching the Scopus, Web of Science, ERIC, and PsycINFO databases for publications from 2015 to 2025. A total of 38 articles met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed using a thematic analysis approach. The findings identified four main themes of humanistic strategies: (1) affective strategies (mindfulness and relaxation) that mitigate the physiological responses to anxiety; (2) relational strategies (the teacher as a facilitator) that fulfill students' needs for emotional support; (3) humanistic pedagogical strategies (meaningful learning) that connect mathematics to real-life contexts; and (4) environmental strategies (creating a threat-free classroom) that build a sense of psychological safety. These four strategies proved effective in reducing mathematics anxiety as they address the affective dimension and meet students' fundamental needs for security, appreciation, and emotional connection. This research contributes to the development of a taxonomy of humanistic strategies that can serve as a reference for interventions by teachers and researchers. Future research is recommended to examine the long-term effectiveness of humanistic strategies through longitudinal and experimental studies across diverse cultural contexts.

Abstract

This research was developed to create a Triangle Geometry Puzzle learning media to support the mathematical representation abilities of fourth-grade elementary school students, especially in recognizing, analyzing, composing, and breaking down various types of triangles according to Phase B Learning Outcomes of the Independent Curriculum. From the findings of interviews with teachers of SDN 3 Tlogotirto which showed a lack of concrete media in mathematics lessons, so that students were less enthusiastic, tended to be passive especially at the back of the class, and had difficulty representing triangles concretely because they depended on KUMER/LKS books and simple lecture/discussion methods. The main objectives included an assessment of the feasibility and description of the practicality of the media. The ADDIE model Research and Development approach was applied through the stages of needs/curriculum/material analysis, design using GeoGebra/CorelDRAW, development of a fourteen by fourteen centimeter black-and-white acrylic puzzle with seven types of triangles plus a QR code containing an explanation of the triangle material including properties/characteristics/types, explanatory animated videos and Wordwall quizzes. Based on the analysis, an average percentage was obtained with very practical criteria, indicating that the puzzle media meets the needs and characteristics of elementary school students. The black and white triangle puzzle display is accompanied by various concrete shapes of triangle types so that it attracts attention and increases learning focus.

Abstract

Fraction misconceptions represent a persistent epistemological obstacle among elementary school students globally and contribute to difficulties in learning mathematics at subsequent educational levels; however, comprehensive syntheses regarding their typologies, causes, and interventions remain limited. This study aims to identify the types of fraction misconceptions, analyze their contributing factors, and synthesize effective pedagogical interventions to remediate these misconceptions among elementary school students. The method employed was a systematic literature review following the PRISMA protocol, encompassing 48 indexed empirical articles published between 2011 and 2025, retrieved from the Scopus, Web of Science, ERIC, and Google Scholar databases. The findings revealed three primary typologies of fraction misconceptions: fundamental concept misconceptions, comparison and ordering misconceptions, and operational misconceptions, with multifactorial causes encompassing epistemological, didactical, and students' personal cognitive factors. Pedagogical interventions proven effective include the use of manipulative media, the Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) approach, cognitive conflict strategies, and the integration of adaptive technology. This study concludes that remediating fraction misconceptions necessitates a holistic approach that simultaneously integrates various intervention strategies, with recommendations for teachers to conduct early diagnosis and for future researchers to develop technology-based diagnostic assessment instruments and longitudinal studies to examine the sustainability of intervention effects.
