Abstract

This study aims to describe the implementation of the phonics method in introducing English literacy to Group B students at TK Bilingual Islamic School Rumah Ilmu, Bekasi Regency. The study was motivated by the importance of early literacy as a foundation for children’s reading, writing, vocabulary development, and language readiness. This research used a qualitative case study approach. The data were collected through classroom observation, interviews with teachers and school management, and documentation of learning activities. The data were analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings show that the phonics method was implemented through the introduction of letter names, letter symbols, and letter sounds in a gradual, playful, and multisensory manner. Children in the new Group B class were introduced to beginning sounds, while children in the old Group B class continued to ending sounds and simple word construction. Teachers used picture cards, worksheets, sandpaper letters, games, songs, and audiovisual media to support children’s understanding of the relationship between letters and sounds. The implementation encouraged children to recognize alphabets, connect sounds with symbols, pronounce simple English words, and read simple sentences according to their developmental stage. These findings indicate that phonics can support early English literacy when implemented through developmentally appropriate, enjoyable, and interactive learning.

Abstract

The use of personal pronouns in descriptive writing is essential for clarity and cohesion, yet many EFL learners struggle with correct application due to grammatical differences between their first language and English. This study aimed to analyze the types of personal pronoun errors found in descriptive texts written by eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Berastagi and to describe the patterns of these errors. A qualitative content analysis design was employed. The data were collected from 30 descriptive texts written by students of class VIII-3 on the topics "My Best Friend" or "My Pet." Errors were identified and classified using Dulay, Burt, and Krashen's Surface Strategy Taxonomy. The analysis revealed 55 personal pronoun errors across four types: omission (14 errors, 25.4%), addition (7 errors, 12.7%), misordering (1 error, 1.8%), and misformation (33 errors, 60%). Misformation was the most dominant error type, indicating persistent difficulties with case confusion (subject/object/possessive) and gender mismatches. These findings suggest that L1 transfer from Indonesian, where the pronoun dia covers all third-person functions without case or gender marking, significantly contributes to students' errors. This study provides practical insights for EFL teachers to develop targeted instructional strategies for teaching personal pronouns in descriptive writing contexts.

Abstract

Speaking skills are one of the essential language competencies that need to be developed in elementary school students. However, the speaking skills of Grade III students at SDN 2 Tempurejo were still relatively low, as indicated by the low level of learning mastery achieved during the pre-cycle stage. This study aimed to optimize students’ speaking skills through the implementation of the Think Pair Share (TPS) cooperative learning model assisted by pop-up book media. The research employed Classroom Action Research (CAR) using the Kemmis and McTaggart model, which consisted of two cycles: planning, action, observation, and reflection. The subjects of this study were 15 Grade III students of SDN 2 Tempurejo in the 2025/2026 academic year. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. Speaking skills were assessed based on four indicators, namely fluency, vocabulary usage, coherence of ideas, and self-confidence. The results showed a consistent improvement in students’ speaking skills across the research cycles. The average score increased from 68.2 in the pre-cycle to 73.4 in Cycle I and further improved to 86.2 in Cycle II. Learning mastery also increased from 66.67% in the pre-cycle to 86.67% in Cycle I and reached 100% in Cycle II. The N-Gain score of 0.57 indicated a moderate level of improvement. These findings demonstrate that the Think Pair Share cooperative learning model assisted by pop-up book media was effective in optimizing the speaking skills of Grade III elementary school students at SDN 2 Tempurejo

Abstract

This study examines the implementation of the SiPerantau Program (Synergy ofOverseas Work Preparation through Language and Culture Training) as amechanism to strengthen the competence of prospective Indonesian migrantworkers (CPMI) at BP3MI West Sumatra. Established by BP3MI West Sumatra in2019, this program represents a public service innovation aimed at addressing thecompetency gap among CPMI, particularly regarding foreign language proficiencyand occupational skills demanded by destination countries. The theoreticalframework employed in this study is David C. Korten's (1988) programimplementation model, which evaluates three key dimensions of fit: the programitself, the implementing organization, and the target group. A qualitative descriptiveapproach was adopted, with data gathered through semi-structured in-depthinterviews, documentary analysis, and literature review, utilizing purposive samplingtechniques. Participants included BP3MI West Sumatra officials, BPVP Padanginstructors, current program participants, alumni, and other relevant stakeholders.Findings reveal that the SiPerantau Program has yet to achieve fully optimalimplementation. In terms of program content, training activities remaindisproportionately centered on foreign language acquisition rather than practicalpreparation in destination-country work culture and technical skills. Theimplementing organization is constrained by a limited number of instructors anddifficulties in managing digital service infrastructure. Regarding the target groupdimension, the program has demonstrated success in reaching its intendedbeneficiaries and has contributed to improved participant readiness for overseasemployment, though the distribution of benefits remains uneven. Factors supportingimplementation include a well-defined legal and policy framework, availableresources, effective inter-institutional coordination, and strong commitment fromboth implementers and participants. Constraining factors encompass operationallimitations, digital information system challenges, participants' economicconstraints, insufficient family support, and geographic accessibility barriers.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the low level of learning focus among third-grade students in Mathematics at SDN 2 Mekarmukti. One strategy to improve student learning focus is the implementation of "brain break activities" short pauses involving light physical movement during lessons. This study aimed to determine the effect of using brain break activities on the learning focus of third-grade students in Mathematics at SDN 2 Mekarmukti. A quantitative approach was employed using a pre-experimental method with a One-Group Pretest-Posttest design. The study subjects consisted of 33 third-grade students from SDN 2 Mekarmukti. Data were collected using a student learning focus questionnaire administered before and after the intervention. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and a paired-sample t-test. The results showed that the average student learning focus score increased from 66.70 in the pretest to 82.03 in the posttest. Hypothesis testing yielded a significance value of 0.000 (p < 0.05), leading to the rejection of H₀ and the acceptance of H₁. Thus, it can be concluded that the use of brain break activities has a significant effect on the learning focus of third-grade students in Mathematics at SDN 2 Mekarmukti. Implementing brain break activities helps enhance students' attention, concentration, active participation, and engagement during the learning process, thereby making instruction more effective and enjoyable.
