Abstract

This study was conducted to examine the naming of unique culinary products in Banyuwangi through a social semiotic perspective. Culinary names are not only used as product labels, but are also shaped as signs that carry cultural meanings, taste associations, local identity, and commercial attraction. The problem discussed in this study concerns the forms of semiotic signs found in unique culinary names and the social functions represented through those names. This research used a descriptive qualitative method with a social semiotic approach. The data consisted of 37 unique culinary names in Banyuwangi, such as Pentol Judes, Bakso Mercon, Bebek Songkem, Mi Gacoan, Es Kecebong, Nasi Tempong, Pecel Pitik, and Botok Tawon. The analysis was carried out by using Charles Sanders Peirce’s theory of icons, indexes, and symbols, and M.A.K. Halliday’s view of language as social semiotics. The findings show that culinary names in Banyuwangi contain iconic, indexical, and symbolic signs. Symbolic signs tend to appear strongly because many names are formed through metaphor, slang, popular culture, and local cultural references. In Halliday’s perspective, the names also perform ideational, interpersonal, and textual functions. Through these functions, culinary naming is used to represent food characteristics, attract consumers, build social interaction, and strengthen Banyuwangi’s cultural identity. Keywords: social semiotics, culinary naming, Banyuwangi, Peirce, Halliday

Abstract

Fire safety is a critical component of maritime operations, particularly in preventing and controlling onboard fire incidents that may endanger crew, cargo, and vessel integrity. One of the primary tools used during the initial stage of firefighting is the portable fire extinguisher (PFE), although its effectiveness depends heavily on proper maintenance and operational readiness. This study analyzes constraints in PFE maintenance onboard MV. HMT Fortune and evaluates their implications for ship safety, using a qualitative approach through observation and interviews with the Master and Third Officer. The findings show that although PFE availability is adequate, several issues persist, including damaged seals, reduced pressure, outdated inspection labels, poor cleanliness, and improper placement, alongside limited port time, suboptimal documentation, and insufficient crew training. These constraints are categorized into technical, operational, managerial, and human factors. Shipping companies are recommended to strengthen maintenance systems, documentation, and crew training to comply with international safety standards Keywords: Maritime Safety, Portable Fire Extinguishers, Maintenance, Fire Prevention, Vessel Safety

Abstract

The low reading literacy ability of elementary school students is influenced by the use of less varied learning media so that students tend to be less active and less motivated in the learning process. This study aims to determine the effect of using picture guessing media on the reading literacy of second-grade students of UPT SPF SD Inpres Bangkala III. The study used a quantitative approach with a pre-experimental research type through a One Group Pretest–Posttest Design. The research sample consisted of 28 second-grade students of class II B who were determined using a purposive sampling technique. Data collection was carried out through tests, observations, and documentation. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and inferential statistics with normality tests, homogeneity tests, and Paired Sample t-Tests assisted by SPSS version 22. The results showed that the application of picture guessing media was carried out very well, while student activity was in the good to very good category. The results of the analysis showed an increase in students' reading literacy abilities after participating in learning using picture guessing media. Hypothesis testing through Paired Sample t-Test showed a significance value (Sig. 2-tailed) less than 0.05 so that the alternative hypothesis was accepted. Thus, the use of picture guessing media has a significant effect on increasing reading literacy of class II students at UPT SPF SD Inpres Bangkala III.

Abstract

The growth of the digital economy has reshaped Generation Z's consumptive behavior, particularly through virtual currency transactions on gaming platforms such as Roblox. This article aims to conduct a literature review on the effect of fear of missing out (FOMO) on digital impulsive buying, with self-regulation positioned as a mediating variable among Generation Z Roblox users. The review was conducted through a narrative literature review approach, tracing relevant indexed journal articles through Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, Frontiers, and Scopus databases using the keywords fear of missing out, impulsive buying, self-regulation, and digital consumption. Thirteen core articles were selected and reviewed in depth based on thematic relevance, methodological clarity, and theoretical contribution to the topic. The review indicates that FOMO is consistently associated with impulsive buying behavior in the digital domain, both directly and through affective pathways such as hedonic motivation, while self-regulation capacity may either strengthen or weaken this relationship depending on the level of cognitive resource depletion (ego depletion). This review concludes that self-regulation is a potentially important mediating variable between FOMO and digital impulsive buying, and formulates theoretical propositions and a future empirical research agenda in the context of Generation Z Roblox users, a population that remains understudied.

Abstract

Writing an undergraduate thesis is a complex academic process that often leads students to doubt their own abilities. This condition indicates that competence need satisfaction (CNS), as explained in Self-Determination Theory, has not been optimally fulfilled. This study aimed to examine the effect of structure provided by supervisors on the competence need satisfaction of Psychology students at University X who were completing their undergraduate theses. This study employed a quantitative method with a correlational design involving 253 Psychology students who were writing their undergraduate theses, selected using a convenience sampling technique. The research instruments were the modified TASCQ–Short Form and the modified Basic Psychological Need Satisfaction Scale (BPNSS), with reliability coefficients of 0.882 and 0.727, respectively. The data were analyzed using simple linear regression analysis. The results showed that the structure provided by supervisors had a positive and significant effect on students' competence need satisfaction (R = 0.307; R² = 0.094; p < .05). The findings indicate that structure contributed 9.4% to students' competence need satisfaction, while the remaining 90.6% was explained by other factors beyond the scope of this study. These findings highlight the important role of supervisors' structure in supporting students' competence need satisfaction throughout the undergraduate thesis writing process.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effects of transformational leadership, organizational culture, and conflict of interest on the work motivation of public elementary school teachers in Dramaga District, Bogor Regency, both partially and simultaneously. A quantitative approach with a survey method was employed. The population consisted of 173 teachers, and a sample of 121 teachers was selected using the Slovin formula and proportionate random sampling technique. Data were collected through questionnaires and analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics. The analytical techniques included descriptive statistics, multiple linear regression, t-test, F-test, and coefficient of determination (R²). The findings reveal that transformational leadership has a positive and significant effect on teachers' work motivation (β = 0.262; t = 7.037; p < 0.05). Organizational culture also has a positive and significant effect (β = 0.399; t = 7.508; p < 0.05), while conflict of interest has a negative and significant effect on teachers' work motivation (β = -0.170; t = -3.810; p < 0.05). Simultaneously, the three independent variables significantly influence teachers' work motivation (F = 74.182; p < 0.05). The coefficient of determination (R² = 0.656) indicates that 65.6% of the variance in teachers' work motivation is explained by the three variables, while the remaining 34.4% is influenced by other factors outside the research model. Organizational culture was found to be the most dominant factor affecting teachers' work motivation. Therefore, strengthening organizational culture, implementing effective transformational leadership, and minimizing conflicts of interest are essential to improving teachers' work motivation.
