Abstract

This study aims to analyze the process of instilling national defense values among fifth-grade students at SD Negeri Lembang through Civics Education learning, while also exploring the impact of digital technology on their sense of national awareness. In the era of globalization and rapid technological advancement, Generation Alpha faces significant challenges, such as dependence on digital devices, exposure to negative content, and a declining interest in national identity and civic engagement. This research employs a qualitative approach using a case study method. Data were collected through observations, in-depth interviews with teachers, parents, and students, as well as documentation of learning activities. The findings indicate that students’ awareness of national defense is uneven and influenced by various factors, including the lack of active parental involvement, unengaging teaching methods, and the uncontrolled use of technology. Teachers play a crucial role as facilitators of civic values in schools, while parents are expected to serve as role models at home. The study concludes that the cultivation of national defense values must be carried out collaboratively between schools and families, using adaptive approaches in response to the dynamics of the digital era.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effect of implementing the Science, Environment, Technology, Society (SETS) learning model on critical thinking skills in social studies learning. This study is a quasi-experiment with a Pretest-Posttest Control Group Design. The population for this study was selected using cluster random sampling, namely all fifth-grade students at SDN Klender 10 Pagi, with a sample size of 50 students consisting of an experimental class and a control class. The experimental class received the SETS learning model treatment, while the control class received the STAD cooperative learning model treatment. The data collection technique used was a test in the form of 10 essay questions based on critical thinking skill indicators, with a scoring scale of 1-5 and a maximum score of 50. The test was administered twice, before the treatment (pretest) and after the treatment (posttest). Based on the results of descriptive data analysis, it was found that the average critical thinking skill score of the experimental class was 37.38, while that of the control class was 31.16. This means that social studies learning using the SETS model is better than the STAD model. Inferential analysis used a paired t-test to determine the difference between the pretest and posttest in the experimental and control classes. The calculation results showed that the t-value for the experimental class was greater than the t-value for the control class, i.e., 17.93 > 14.47. Therefore, it can be concluded that the SETS model has a more significant effect than the STAD cooperative model on critical thinking skills in social studies learning in fifth-grade elementary school.

Abstract

Critical thinking is one of the essential 21st-century competencies that should be fostered from early education levels. In science learning, this skill enables students to analyze information, evaluate evidence, and solve problems logically. However, learning practices that are still teacher-centered and lack student engagement contribute to the low levels of critical thinking among elementary students. This study aims to examine the effect of the Children Learning in Science (CLIS) model assisted by Wordwall media on students’ critical thinking skills in science learning. The research employed a quasi-experimental method using a pretest-posttest control group design. The subjects were fifth-grade students from two classes, where the experimental class applied the CLIS model with Wordwall, while the control class used the Discovery Learning model. A critical thinking test was used as the research instrument, and the data were analyzed using N-Gain scores and an independent t-test. The results showed a significant improvement in the critical thinking skills of students in the experimental class compared to the control class. The CLIS stages encouraged deep thinking activities, while Wordwall enhanced interactivity and conceptual understanding. It can be concluded that the CLIS model supported by digital media is an effective strategy to improve critical thinking skills in elementary science learning.
