Abstract

Students' reading interest is an important aspect in literacy development and academic achievement. This study aims to analyze students' reading interest at SDN Bunajih 2 Labang. The results show that in general, the reading interest of low-grade students at SDN Bunajih 2 Labang is good, supported by student interviews, observations and teacher interviews. However, some students still show low interest in reading, which is in line with previous research findings on the correlation between reading interest and learning achievement. The school has implemented various strategies, including the CALISTUNG program and the reading corner, to increase students' interest in reading. Observational findings also revealed that reading corners are available in each classroom with a varied collection of books, used as learning resources and updated regularly. Nevertheless, there are some aspects that need to be improved, such as the management of the collection list and reading recap in the reading corner as well as improving communication between teachers and students. This research provides valuable insights for the development of more effective programs in improving students' interest in reading at SDN Bunajih 2 Labang and other schools.

Abstract

This study aims to determine and describe the literacy understanding of reading narrative texts of elementary school students in understanding information and reflecting on information. This research was conducted at SD Negeri 132 Jambi City from July to August 2024. The research data were collected by means of observation, interviews, documentation, and tests. After the data were collected, the data were analysed quantitatively. The results showed that the literacy comprehension of reading narrative texts of grade III students of SD Negeri 132 Jambi City through understanding information in this study, based on qualifications was quite good. This is because the percentage of students who obtained a score of 10 (very good) and a score of 8 (good) totalled 69.56%. The literacy comprehension of reading narrative text of third grade students of SD Negeri 132 Jambi City through reflecting information in this study, based on qualifications is good. This is because the percentage of students who obtained a score of 5 (very good) and a score of 3 (good enough) totalled 82.61%. Factors inhibiting the understanding of reading literacy of students of SD Negeri 132 Jambi City are from the students themselves (lack of interest in reading), from schools (libraries that are less comfortable), and from parents (lack of attention). From the results of this study to principals and teachers it is recommended that they always actively intensify activities aimed at increasing students' reading literacy. Teacher assistance is needed in reading corner activities to give maximum impact on students' interest in reading. Joint literacy activities should always be scheduled, and if the weather is rainy the location can be moved to the school library. School principals need to make the library neater and more comfortable and equipped with a wider range of non-academic reading books so that reading literacy-related activities can use the library. As well as being an alternative location for students to spend their break time.

Abstract

This study investigates the effects of the Reading Workshop and SQ4R methods, along with achievement motivation, on the literacy skills of elementary school students in Surabaya. Using a quantitative quasi-experimental design, 189 students were divided into two groups: one employing the Reading Workshop method (92 participants) and the other using SQ4R (97 participants). Data were collected through literacy tests administered at pretest and posttest stages, with average scores increasing from 65.40 (pretest) to 73.47 (posttest). Achievement motivation was also measured to assess its impact on literacy. Results revealed significant differences in literacy improvement between the methods, with Reading Workshop showing superior effectiveness (F = 66.328, p < 0.001). Additionally, students with high achievement motivation demonstrated better literacy outcomes compared to those with low motivation (F = 196.627, p < 0.001). However, no significant interaction was found between the teaching methods and achievement motivation regarding literacy skills (F = 0.163, p = 0.687). The study concludes that while both methods are beneficial, achievement motivation is a more critical factor in enhancing literacy skills. It is recommended that educators focus on increasing students' motivation alongside implementing these methods and suggests further research into various teaching strategies and their long-term effects on literacy development.
