Abstract

There are so many conveniences that can be accessed in this sophisticated era, such as the convenience of automatically translating Chinese text into Indonesian. However, the accuracy and precision of the translation results obtained from the automatic translation machine still need to be reviewed further. This research aims to identify language errors in the translation of Chinese documents into Indonesian through Youdao Fanyi and DeepL Translator. This research is descriptive qualitative research based on language error analysis. The source used is taken from the manual book of an e-cigarette company, as much as one document consisting of several Excel cells. The Chinese document was translated into Indonesian using two automatic translation machines. The translation results were analyzed for language errors at the morphological, syntactic and semantic levels. The results of this research show that there are still language errors at the morphological, syntactic and semantic levels in the translated texts produced by Youdao Fanyi and DeepL Translator. Both automatic translation engines tend to translate texts word by word and don’t recognize terminology related to machinery and engineering terms. The translation results are an initial form of translation that needs to be edited to obtain more accurate document translation results.

Abstract

This study examines the dynamics of language use, particularly the Dayak Maanyan language in Kalimantan, using the framework of language games in Wittgenstein's philosophy of language. This study focuses on analyzing the orientation of thought in the use of the Dayak Maanyan language, outlining the rules of games in its expressions, and evaluating the compatibility of Wittgenstein's concept of language games with the Dayak Maanyan language. Utilizing a qualitative approach through literature studies, data were collected from various relevant scientific publications on the Dayak language and culture, as well as Wittgenstein's theory of language games. The findings reveal that the Dayak Maanyan language, through its diverse dialects and communicative practices, serves not only as a tool for communication, but also as a medium for strengthening social identity and preserving cultural traditions. This language reflects the cultural values and social structures of the Dayak community, in which the meaning of language emerges from its contextual use in daily life and specific social practices. These results align with Wittgenstein's philosophical concept, which emphasizes that meaning arises from use. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of the relationship between language, meaning, and social practices in multicultural societies, particularly in the Dayak community.

Abstract

Language is a medium for expressing anger. The ease of communication on social media encourages speakers to form virtual communities that specifically designed for expressing anger. The Angry Community on X is an example of how language is used to express emotions on social media. This paper aimed to examine how anger is conveyed through language. This paper was a qualitative descriptive method using a case study approach. The data consist of 30 expressions of anger obtained from tweets or threads posted by members of the Angry Community. Data were collected over one month, specifically in August 2024. The results showed that swear words and locutionary speech act were used to express anger. References to the meanings of swear words are categorized into 27% situational terms, 53% related to animals, 7% affiliated to spirits, and 13% associated with objects. The sentence structures identified included 19 declarative sentences, 6 interrogative sentences, and 5 imperative sentences. Members of the community are predominantly male, aged between 16 and 25 years, with the majority having completed their education at senior high school. In contrast, community members have diverse occupations, equally split between private sector employees and entrepreneurs.

Abstract

This study examines the attitudes of East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) civil servants toward the English Day Policy introduced in Governor Regulation No. 56 of 2018. The policy aligns with NTT’s focus on tourism development, emphasizing English proficiency as key to enhancing global competitiveness. Addressing a research gap, the study explores the sociolinguistic effects of promoting English in a multilingual, culturally rich region. Data were collected from 604 civil servants via an online questionnaire distributed through WhatsApp. The survey included seven Likert-scale statements and one open-ended question in Bahasa Indonesia. Using a mixed-method approach, the analysis combined quantitative data with qualitative sociolinguistic insights. Findings reveal generally positive attitudes toward the policy, with most respondents agreeing that English is crucial for tourism and acknowledging the policy’s benefits. They also dismissed concerns that the initiative could harm local languages or Bahasa Indonesia. However, participants noted limitations in implementing the language policy, highlighting that favorable attitude alone cannot ensure its success.

Abstract

This study presents the dominant social reflection category that appears in the short story anthology Kita Susah Tidur sejak Dilahirkan by Aksan Taqwin Embe. Twelve stories are delivered in a light and simple manner, and the topics discussed in each story reflect the circumstances that occur in the real world. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method in the form of a literature study with Alan Swingewood's literary sociology approach. The results of the study show that in the short story anthology Kita Susah Tidur sejak Dilahirkan, four dominant categories of social reflection appear, namely land confiscation in the short stories Hari Muram and Bisikan-Bisikan; violence against women in the short stories Selawat Sepasang Lansia, Bisikan-Bisikan, Anjing yang Menggagalkan Pernikahan, and Menjemput Tubuh; fishermen's lean season in the short stories Menyisir Kematian and Anjing yang Menggagalkan Pernikahan, and gender stereotypes in the short story Pengarang yang Bermartabat. These four categories of social reflection are relevant to the real world because they are reinforced by Alan Swingewood's theory of literary sociology, which sees literary works as social documents and formulates the concept that literary works can be seen as social reflections.

Abstract

This study examines the personality structure of the character Elizabeth, who is the Queen of England in the film Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007) through the theory of Sigmund Freud, as well as the psychosocial development of Erik Erikson's theory, and the defense mechanisms of Sigmund Freud's theory that she uses. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method with content analysis, examining the elements of dialogue and character behavior in the film. Data for this study were collected by watching the film, noting relevant scenes, and analyzing them according to the theory used. The results of the study show that Elizabeth experiences internal conflict between her id, ego, and superego and this reflects how she develops as a national leader. Erikson's psychosocial stages such as Identity vs Role Confusion, Intimacy vs Isolation, and Generativity vs Stagnation, show Elizabeth's changes when dealing with matters related to politics and society. In addition, the defense mechanisms used by Elizabeth such as rationalization and sublimation play a positive role in maintaining her emotional stability, while regression and forgiveness lead to negative ones.

Abstract

This research analyzes the concept of love in the anthology of the cerkak of “Rembulan Bali Ndadari” by Harwimuka using Robert J. Sternberg’s theory of love psychology. This theory explains that love consists of three main components: intimacy, passion, and decision or commitment, which can result in different types of love. This research was conducted using a qualitative descriptive method with content analysis techniques. The research data is in the form of texts from nine stories in the anthology selected purposively based on their relationship with the theme of love. The analysis results show that the characters in the cerkak of “Rembulan Bali Ndadari” represent a combination of three components of love that produce four types of love. The four types of love include pleasure, brotherly, romantic, and perfect love. This finding illustrates the dynamics of the relationship between characters based on Sternberg’s theory of love. This research contributes to understanding the concept of love in literary works through a psychological approach, especially the psychology of love.
